Teacher says drug tests not the answer As a teacher of 15 years experience i would like to reply to the recent comment by a writer who criticized the formal protest made by the overseas teachers association of the proposed mandatory drug testing Gram. There is surely not a single teacher in the Dodds department of defense dependents schools system or anywhere for that matter who would disagree wit the writer that a sorry situation exists in the United states wherein drugs have become epidemic in our school system in the business sports and entertain ment worlds and in the Homes of families so alienate that children must report their parents drug use. But i think the writer fails to see the Point being made by the protest. Illegal drugs Are readily available in every nation on Earth but it is in the United state that a serious social problem exists because of their widespread use. This problem exists not because the youth of America Are less moral or less responsible than the youth of other nations it exists because of deeper problems in the fabric of american society that leave its youth with few role models whom they can respect or whose image they feel confident in follow ing. The american Media is full of stories of business men who Are caught using unethical and illegal Means to Garner huge personal profits of sports heroes whose behaviour is a exemplary or whose drug use leads to the loss of million Dollar careers of manufacturer who Cut Corners to boost profits by producing inferior products often endangering the lives of consumer dependent on those products of religious leaders found involved in immoral activities and losing Access to huge sums of Money gained from people scarcely Able to afford the contributions repeatedly asked of them and of government whose officials seem regularly to be discovered involved in illegal or immoral activities and forced to resign from office. And i m sure there was t a schoolchild or even a adult in the entire nation who was proud when it was discovered that people in our government were involved in the Sale of weapons to a nation which not Only held 52 of our fellow countrymen hostage for Overa year but has repeatedly derailed efforts to bring peace to the Middle East. These Are just surface exam Ples of the Lack of integrity in Public affairs that fill the Media news reports. The concentration of news coverage on these kinds of activities does not build Strong Faith in one s leaders nor in one s countrymen. No wonder the youth of America Are confused and seeking escape. But that drug use brings them no escape is an Issue barely worthy of commentary. The real answer to these problems lies much deeper than the testing of american citizens to see if they Are using drugs. If our society really wants to Stop the drug epidemic that grips the nation it must begin to take measures to restore worthy values at All Levels of society thus restoring Confidence and Pride in what our nation represents. Testing employees for drug use dislike putting a Bandage on festering cancer it looks Good but does Little to solve the real problem. If one wished to find reasons for the never ending Supply of drugs to the american Public he might read the Iran Contra connection by Marshall Scott an Hunter and discover interesting coincidences Between the heroin epidemic that swept America during the War in Southeast Asia and the cocaine epidemic that is rampant during efforts to fund warfare in Centra America. Another source of information on the remarkable Supply of illegal drugs coming into America in spite of millions of tax dollars spent funding the drug enforce ment administration is available in the reports of . Army col. James Gritts who penetrated the Golden Triangle in Central Asia and questioned the War lords who control drug exports from that Region. His findings though not Well publicized Are certainly worthwhile Reading for anyone interested in where thereal roots of America s drug problem lie. You should listen to your teachers. Their most important Job is to help you find truth. They Are trying to open your eyes and help you to think and Analyse an be a responsible citizen in a nation that sorely needs them. They Are trying to Tell you that the answer to on of our most serious problems should not be made to appear the fault of those least responsible for its exis tence.
