Dear Kan i checked to make sure your facts were Correct. They were right on the Mark according to the associated press. A teen Al Ger who could perform such a cruel and inhuman act must be seriously disturbed. According to lop almost every horrible crime involving mutilation can be traced to a childhood history of torturing animals. If i lived in that Community i would keep a Sharp Eye on the youth and make sure he received intensive therapy As Well As close observation. And i agree that the sentence seems awfully Light in View of what thai kid did. Dear Ann Landers when Are you going to Stop printing letters from disgruntled housewives who claim to be nuclear physicists because they warm up Frozen dinners in a Micro wave if the chores performed by that lame brain who wrote to complain Are Worth $75,000 a year As she claims the average Secretary s salary would be on a Par with the top executive at ism. Page 11 letters military clubs self sufficiency explained after Reading the recent article business training far managers urged to make i clubs profitable i chuckled a Little snidely to myself. The military in its infinite Wisdom tried to Burn the Candle at both ends in its drive to reduce alcohol consumption Over the past years. It has been succeed ing to such an extent thai people Don t drink outside their Quarter nearly As much As they used to. I have never been a club manager or employee except As a master at arms do they still have the but there is one him t do know and that s the Basic Rule of any club if you sell booze you make Money. What you do with the Money determines whether you run in the Black or the red. The club system of yesterday was killed by consolidation and Central management overkill. The club system of today is floundering and will succumb be cause of the insatiable need of the military Community social welfare slate programs drug abuse alcohol abuse spouse abuse child abuse single Parent child care Etc to be supported by non appropriated funds. Clubs no longer exist for their patronizing membership but rather for their non patronizing military Community As a whole. Nun mid location withheld editor s note Robert inn nun chief club operations Branch Usa Keur Community and finlly support Agency replies i am very interested to addressing your concerns re Garding present ind in lure club operation and pro Gram. My Are absolutely right about the alcohol de Umoru Atod program s Success in the army tin Dally in Europe. We ate proud of the fact that alcohol re Lileo incidents and inc Denu have greatly decreased. We an also proud of being Able to run profitable clubs without depending solely on the sales of alcoholic Bere Raee. Last year Usa eur clubs nude thru larg est profit Ince 1981, almost $9 million. Although this year profit is Down More than a million Dollar from the same time but year ire can t by the blame totally on reduced beverage sales. Loss of appropriated fund dollars support and deficient food programs Are the real reasons. The need to Bain and educate our managers in Way of providing better programs and services is a real need at All times ii is an absolute necessity now. This Educa Tion includes current marketing and sales technique coupled with just Plain Good old fashioned business practices. We still provide top notch american Ameni ties when our managers Are property trained to do the basics Well and build their service team to truly care about numbers and their guests. Today we have to offer comprehensive programs i our clubs that include competitive food and beverage services entertainment tic and Are in fact for the total Community. We most concentrate on continuing a provide Good american food at reasonable prices and where does Are a condition of membership a positive return in goods and senders should be insured to each member. Our club systems of yesterday nourished because senior cos and senior officers recognized them As the Community Ndal centers they were and frequently used them themselves. As managers we need to provide pro Grams and reasons for our Millers and their families to feel the same Way and we do need to encourage our military Leaden to think of their club or club Lytten first when planning unit functions. Consolidation and Central management an areas that All commanders should constantly look at to ensure the a healthy club system can be a very positive Revenue Generator that will Benefit Trie entire military and civilian support Community. The social welfare state programs referred to in your letter Are a necessity and help create a stronger support base for the military Mission. In the future these programs Wilt receive More fund Dol Lars and clubs will be better Able to utilize Ihler income to ensure self sufficiency. Reader questions placement of Are Story i ant writing this letter is reference to a recent front Page Story concerning the discontent of a number of the troops participating in reformer with res Andt Henet rations.
