Now at Christmas Lime fed myself reflecting. I remember Well my first Hunts in 1974 South of Regensburg and How i thoroughly enjoyed Hunting pleasant. But the Friendship of the German Hunters what still beams clearest when 1 think Back about those cold Days in the Winter bavarian Corn Fields near a Small Jam town called Pinko Fen. Although Haven t hunted in hat area for a year or two those friendships with Hans Artmann and aliens Fla Ming still seem As firm As Ever. When i hunted red Deer in Scotland i walked through the Heather and countless Stream Beds laced with immaculate rocks of All colors i remember thinking Many times How i was extremely fortunate to have the experience. Of yes i could have wandered through the High lands As a hiker without the Rifle and without the company of the stalker. But i never would have crawled on All fours through the Heather on the wet spongy peal Beds. And the wind would have been Only wind rather than a companion in the Hunting scheme. Some might think my motives were improperly Mark Swearengen oriented More bluntly that i was crazy. Nevertheless it was Hunting that got me to the mountains of Scotland in the fall Hunting put me alone in the Middle of Snow Cov ered forests in december when the air was freezing and darkness came Early. These Hunts were soothing to the mind and usually concluded with an Exchange or stories and Christmas mementos with Reorg Windisch my German Hunting partner . I la always remember those moments in his Small Kitchen when we would Shaw out by the Wood stove and talk about Hunting Between sips of hot Tea. It was Hunting that got mtg into the Alpine regions on Hunts for Chamois. After a few years of that my interest in Mountain hiking took off. That Lead to Mountain climbing and friendships developed through a new and More strenuous outdoor cd Peri and it was Hunting that helped me revive my love for fishing just a year or so ago. Now my Freezer stays full of Trout and i be met some new friends along the Banks of those soft flowing streams. I have still another pleasant Opportunity i attrib Ute to Hunting and that s the Good Fortune to relic to my thoughts through this column to friends during the High Point of the Christmas season. This weekend will be a Good time to be with families and friends to gaze at the Christmas tree and reflect on our blessings. A time to try to feel goo about As Many things As we can bring to mind while reeling compassion Tor those who arc in sorrow or Are less fortunate. It is a Good Lime not to go Hunting yet a great time to go to the Forest just for a walk. I recommend it for everyone. Just after breakfast or in inc afternoon shortly before dark wander into the Forest. Move quietly. Pause Here and there. Observe All the differ ent colors on the ground and in the Trees. Listen and experience a peaceful silence that whispers How the Trees the Birds and the wild animals seem to know and understand this special time of year. Merry Christmas.
