European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 21, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 dear Ann Landers i be just read another Story in our newspaper citing two More attacks by pit Bull terriers on Chil Dren in our area. I know you be written about this in the past but i believe you ought to go Back to this subject one More time. When in god s name will thereby legislation to phase out this Breed of animal can you imag Ine the agony of the victim Dur ing the attack whether he sur Vives or not to be attacked by an animal is every person s most terrifying Nightmare. Are the owners and defenders of this vicious Strain of animal unable to love any one of dozens of other Breeds of canines this Bloodthirsty creature is the result of Man s tinkering and has no place in a Loving Home. I do not know a pit Bull owner nor have i Ever met victim but i am outraged every time i hear or read about a pit Bull tearing a person apart. Please what can be done a Florida Reader dear Reader a highly respected veterinarian who asked that his name not be used told me that the viciousness of the pit Bull is in the genes. Although some breeders insist that the dogs Are gentle unless provoked most Are not. If pit Bull terriers arc neutered they will be Ca Merand less Apt to attack. Neutering will of course phase out this Breed which would not be a bad idea. Dear Ann Landers i am ashamed to admit it but i have been taken fora Large sum of Money because of my stupidity. My son who was in prison gave his cell mate my name an address. This Guy said he just wanted someone to write to and that he liked the Way i looked from a picture. Mike and i exchanged letters for a few months then he wrote and said that for $ 1,700 he could get my son released one Way or another. I was to Send Cash and he would get things started. I sent the Cash. Soon after Mike wrote to say he Wasin solitary confinement and would be there for six months and could t give the Money to his source until he got out of solitary. That was the last i heard from him. Please print this letter to warn others who May be a Gullible As i was. I can t believe i was so stupid. Grand rapids idiot dear . We checked with Pervis Staples the mail room supervisor at Cook county jail in Chicago. He said All mail except Legal correspondence i opened by mail room personnel before going to the prisoners. They Check for contraband if Money is found itis taken to the Trust office and put on the books. A note goes to the inmate telling him or her the Money was received and will be handed Over when he or she leaves the facility. It is possible that a dishonest mail room employee might keep the Money but it is unlikely since mail room personnel Are carefully supervised. Prisoners Are told to instruct their friends and rela Tives not to Send Money. Sorry about your loss. Thanks for writing to warn others. Dear Ann Landers my wonderful brother died of aids. I think it is just terrible that whenever this word appears in the news paper it is printed in capital letters like this aids. Soother disease is treated in this Way. I have never seen where anyone died of cancer. Please ask newspapers not to add to the Heartbreak of the families. Thank you. Jackson Jackson aids stands for acquired immune deficiency syn drome. Not looking for sympathy just respect i be never written to the editor before but i feel it Stime i must speak out about something profiles yes i realize that a lot of soldiers use their profile for gain and ways of getting out of doing Many things in the army and this is Why i think that a profile Soldier has gained a bad reputation. But what about those of us who have permanent profiles who really did t want them but were Given them anyway because of health problems i know Pecan refuse them but by doing so we hinder any future treatments or possible pensions upon retirement. I m a Vietnam vet prior service member who comeback into the army. While in advanced individual training Ait this time around i caught a disease of the nervous system that affected both my vision and hearing. Because of improper treatment my hearing was permanently damaged. Some at this Point might think i m looking for sym Pathy but i m not. All we permanent profiles want is a Little respect. The army worldwide seems to think that we Perma nent profiled soldiers Are not Good for the future of the service. I m being told that Only 20 percent of All re classes Are being retained no matter what rank time in service or previous record. Because of our profiles we Are treated As leftovers people that nobody else1 really wants. Presently. I have a p-3 profile on my hearing Andi m not to be exposed to any noise Over 85 decibels but i was reclassified As a 94b a food specialist Cook. There is not a thing wrong with being a 94b, but when you Tell everybody you were reclassified to a 94b, they look at you As if you Are a really pcs cd up Soldier. I want to thank All of you for your remarks loud laughs and names that you called me. You really know How to build a Man s Confidence. No it was t the lower ranks it was officers and senior cos too just because we be got a physical profile does change the Type of Soldier we Are. Most of us profiles Are better soldiers than a lot of those without. We permanent profiles Aren t looking for sympathy or special favors. All we want is a Little respect because believe it or not having this profile does t make us bad soldiers. I really want to thank those very Little few who really understood and supported me when 1 needed it. I will close by saying that we Are not leftovers to do with whatever pleases you. We Are dedicated soldiers in the United states army. Name and location withheld solution to child care crisis desired thank you for your informative if not depressing series on child care. Full time child care is to a child what a wheelchair is to a paraplegic both Are sadly necessary for a system that has lost its ability to function naturally. When will our society once again appreciate that therein no greater luxury indeed no greater privilege that men will experience on planet Earth than to have a Mil time dedicated wife and Mother for their children. The same holds True for women that there can be no greater luxury or privilege than to have a full time dedicated husband and father for their children. A society harms itself when it implies that being another father wife husband is a less than honorable profession that Quality time can take the place of Quantity of attention spouses and children know this to be a my hand that the one who ends up with the most things or escapades wins. Even in the honorable profession of teaching we open to negotiations i would like to comment on a recent letter titled writer Calls . Talks with terrorism according to websters is defined As violence to intimidate subjugate especially As a political weapon or it s unfortunate and sad that messes. Arafat Menache begin Shamir As Well As other israeli and Arab leaders have committed these acts of violence in the name of Freedom and Justice. I am sad to say that some acts of violence will always go on for the Sake of some cause. I believe that someday humanity May learn to do without it. However in the meantime what is important is that behave an open mind and recognize such opportunities when Ever and wherever they present themselves and not ignore them but make an attempt to exploit them properly. It was Menachem begin who broke the deadlock wit Egypt s Sadat in 1979. We would be fools and remiss As human beings if we Donot take advantage and move Forward with such proposals As Arafat a Gorbachev s perestroika and arms reductions South Africa s recognition of Namibia Etc. Gregory Arapakos Schwet Zingen West Germany have somehow been convinced that it is More Noble to teach a Little of what we know to a lot of children year after year than to pour everything we know As a Par ent into a few god Given children. I can think of no other Way to say it someone mus stay Home with the kids. Husbands and wives have to reconsider the vow they made to each other and the responsibility and Blessing that was Given to them when a child was born into their care. Sure we should be All we can be but be it carefully if we Fly too High our poor handmade wings of Wax will melt and we will have no family to catch us when we fall. Worse yet our own children May someday Sec us incur helpless naked state and by conditioning or neglect Send us to the same Day care Center they grew Upin. It s one Way to get to know their provider Jack Farris Augsburg West Germany different priorities please extend my thanks to the writer who is concerned with a product stocked at cafes. Up until this time i was concerned with nuclear War terrorism and the destruction of the Ozone layer. Now he has enlightened me to a whole new threat to our Way of life Hummingbird feeders Are Cine sold at cafes. God save us All. Staff sgt. Richard e.
