European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - February 14, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Tuesday february 14, 1989 the stars and stripes Page 11 dear readers today is Valentine s Day. To those of you who have been mar ried awhile and have never attached much importance to this Day i have a suggestion. Say to your mate i did t buy you a Val Entine but i want you to know i think you Are pretty terrific and appreciate All the things you do for me All year let me know what happens. Dear Ann Landers fifty five years ago when i Wasin the fourth Grade my family moved from an area where i attended a Small country school to the City where i went to a Large City school. The move took place seven weeks before Valentine s Day. My class in the new school had a Valentine Box the contents of which were distributed on Valentine s Day. The Valentines were displayed by the students on their desks and the teacher had the students line up and walk up and Down the aisles observing the i was a new person in school and very shy i received Only three. The teacher named the three students who receive the most Valentines and told the number received by each. She then mentioned the person who had receive the least number which was me. I will never forget the humiliation and can still see those three Small Woolworth Penny Valentines. My heart remembers the pain. I Hope and Pray that this sort of thing is not being done anywhere today. Please print this. Missouri memories dear . I cannot imagine a teacher being so cruel. Although it s too late for this year next year i Hope teachers everywhere arrange to have each child in the class receive a Valentine from another student and that All other exchanging be done outside of Ann Landers i had an affair with a married Man that lasted 40years. I was his Secretary and single. Three or four times year we went out of town to business we managed to be together several times a month either at my place or in a Motel. I loved him very much and had no interest in seeing another Man although i had Many chances. He said he loved me and that i should be patient because on Day we would be together forever. During the Early years he kept telling me that we had to wait until his children were grown. Later he needed to get his finances straightened around so his wife could t get then he died. As i write this his wife is living in their Beautiful Home As she always did. She is a respected member of the Community and has a great Many friends. I Malone in poor health struggling to make ends meet. I m on social Security during those 40 years of sneaking around my big time executive gave me a Box of Candy on Valentine s Day a Small Bonus for Christmas and Mushy birthday cards signed you know i realize now that this Man had no intention of leaving his wife but i was Gullible and stupid. I can t believe i let this happen. You have my permission to print this letter if you think it might have some value for others although i confess i read several letters in your column that sounded a lot like this one and i did t recognize my self. Just sign me Iowa dear Iowa Here s your letter. The last sentence is a terrific Wake up Call. I Hope somebody hears it. Good Luck to you dear. If my judgment of audience feedback is Correct based on the abundant sound of sniffles during the movies think people were touched by the message but left with nowhere to go i want to say there is somewhere to go you be a helpless bystander As poachers viciously Slaughter these intelligent peaceable creatures. In 1977, Dian Fossey initiated a correspondence with the International primate Protection league . Drawer 766, Summerville . 29484 which lasted the rest of her life. Fossey wrote it is Good to know that people in the outside world care about this place and my work with the gorillas. Possibly the Day after Day rain and fog which now totally envelop the Camp and work do in fluence one s moods after digit s death. It make Sone wonder Why they should go on but she did keep fighting and you saw that fight Courtesy Ofa Afes. Another worthy organization primarily primates inc. . Box 15306, san Antonio Texas 78212 8506takes mentally and physically battered primates and lets them live in peace the remainder of their Days. Work by or. Jane Goodall has shown that primates have memories a concept of self and show emotions of Joy sorrow fear rage and grief. Here Are some follow up facts for cafes movie goers the poachers that Fossey was Able to catch received five to eight years imprisonment for their kill ing of digit plus others of that Gorilla family. The Gorilla Leader and a female were killed by a single bul let through the heart. The female was killed coming to her baby s defense the male was killed coming to her defense the two gorillas captured for the Cologne zoo mentioned i passing in the movie died. Two entire groups of gorillas were killed to obtain these juveniles the zoo wants to replace them. One result of International protest in relation to Gorilla smuggling a dealer is finally being prosecuted in West Germany. While few of us can live a Dian Fossey life we can be a powerful support base i Hope that All who saw gorillas in the Mist will think about the tiny gorillas who died miserable deaths far from their dead mothers stressed and traumatized beyond belief. Think of All who will die unless you do something. Fossey wrote there Are so Many people who Yak about doing but never tears alone carry no weight As for me i still have the conviction that right results inevitably follow right actions. Care to join me Sharon Banister Raf Lakenheath England Many cafes Heaters Are currently showing Goril Las in the Mist the True Story of or. Dian Fossey s life and death and her 17-year struggle to save the endangered Mountain gorillas of Central Africa from extinction. The movie is entertaining but fails to Send the Crit ical message which or. Fossey would have desired. First it contains a misleading footnote that Fossey work resulted in the certain survival of the Mountain Gorilla. In fact there Are Only 600 to 800 Mountain gorillas left in the wild. None has Ever survived in Captivity. Gorillas seen in zoos Are Lowland gorillas which still number 3,000 to 5,000 in the wild Mountain gorillas Are still among the most endangered mammals on Earth. Unless a committed Effort to protect them is maintained they will surely be extinct by the end of this Century and Humankind will no longer share this planet with the greatest of the great apes. Secondly gorillas in the Mist depicts the death of Fossey s most beloved Gorilla a Silverbach named digit but makes no mention of Fossey s response this Slaughter. Following his brutal death at the hands of poachers Fossey founded an organization called the digit fund. The fund sponsors rangers who protect the gorillas from deliberate poaching and who destroy traps which Are set for Small Antelope but often snare Young gorillas. Also the digit fund helps fight the loss of protected Park land in Rwanda due to encroaching by poor Farmers the primary threat to Goril la survival in Light of Rwanda s serious human Popula Tion explosion. Individuals and groups interested in contributing tothe survival of these intelligent and gentle primates should Send donations to the digit fund . Box25, Ithaca . 14850 capt.
