European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 16, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 Arm Landers dear Ann Landers i have been Reading a lot lately about the stress our children Are under Icse Days. I say baloney you Are about my age Ann and i la bet you will agree thai we had it a lot rougher than the kids Loday. The depression was so awful i Don t know How we lived through it. There was t no High food in the House to teed us five kids if the neighbors had t helped i think we would have starved. There were no jobs. Bolh mom and dad took any Little piece of work they could find. I remember when dad put in three Days at a Coal Yard and was paid in Coal which he was darned Happy to Bel. kids today Don t know what it is to be hungry. A lot of them get fed breakfast and lunch in school at government esp Csc which Means by us taxpayers of course V " when Franklin d. Roosevelt became pics Ideal he started the civilian conservation corps which was a godsend. What a Brilliant Ideal it not Only helped re build our country but provided millions of Young ple with jobs. I was one of them. How Many kids today would be willing to work thai hard darned few i la bet. -.-. ".-1 look Al my grandchildren Ann and they arc Cream puffs compared to whal we were. They have it so much softer it in t even Tunny. I la bet you agree with me. Please print my letter and let me know what you think. A feisty michigander dear feisty Here s your letter but i can t agree with you that keds today have it a lot easier than we did. The problems they face Are worse than poverty. In fad i believe growing of in the depression gave us motivation Anil survival skills that today s Young people Don t have. To Pul in another Way they have the disadvantage of too Many advantages today s children must Deal with the reality of nuclear weapon that could incinerate them overnight. And they Are going in have to figure out How to revitalize he environment. In some parts of the country you must go la a museum la see what a Butterfly looks like. The air is polluted. The i ens and lakes Are dying and the Zionc layer has holes ii it. " Wien i was a Rohling up we never used to lock the doors Al in jilt. Today everything is locked up and in spite of the locks alarms and Security systems the a Wulw of muggings rapes and murders that occur in even the Best neighbourhoods is appalling. Crime is ram pull. As a teen Ager i never heard of cocaine or crack. A few of lie musicians smoked reefers but teen Ager did t touch hem. Today there s Speed and Angel dust and crack and rang violence and murders thai Are clearly drug relate there arc billions of dollars to be made dealing dope and some Leen Gen want part of the action. Aids is something else we never heard of. And it s a death sexually transmitted diseases in our Dikiy could be cured with penicillin. I Haven t even mentioned the or Pinta for body building that has created steroid junkies. This is a dangerous drag and Young people Are going bananas aver it. Also the cnui1 to be Pencil thin has produced an astonishing number of anorexic and bulimic teen agers. I m glad i have Ltd the greater part of my life. I won Len t be 10 again for All the Lea in or Lanka. I just any that my grandchildren and yours will be Able to pick their May Hough the mine Fields of the "90s and into the 21st Century. Problem of army users addressed i read with interest the recent comments concerning substandard cos. I heartily agree but would like to broaden the spectrum a Little with regard to substandard performance. If any problem is to be solved the process must begin at the roots the recruitment and Altitude of the enlisted Soldier in today s army. Where do cos come from is it not from the enlisted ranks now i am aware of the fact that there Are substandard cos who continue to recommend substandard enlisted Soldier for promotion when they should be receiving corrective training. I am also aware that if cos trained their soldiers to standards Many duds would be weeded out of the army. However i firmly believe thai there is another Clement involved in the Overall problem of substandard performance in the army. " look at the average civilian who enters today s army. Are they More intelligent perhaps they Are. 1 believe they Are. On the other hand what about the attitude the new Soldier brings with him her when he she joins the army Many come with one idea in mind get what i can from the army and get out the simple fact is that Many new soldiers do Hal i inf Toso Laier they Are Here fora meal ticket a free ride and a College fund. The army is Only an inter Lude to them and is hot to be taken seriously. Many new soldiers have no respect for any author Ity and As far As their role in the army is concerned live a conceited lifestyle. They seek Only to Lake care of self and anything that involves voluntary sacrifice to accomplish the Mission is to be avoided at All Cost. Their Basic motto is " forget the army what s in it former. I think much of this attitude is a result of Modem recruitment efforts for civilians o use the army it s a great place to Start they say. I think thai instead of be All you can be a Tine Motlo. Omit have translated that in their minds to gel All you can get no doubt the recruitment Clement is hoping to retain some of these army users Al a later Date. I m sure that Many do re enlist and that in fact some Are Quality soldiers who have adapted to the army Way of life and thinking. Conversely what a tremendous Price Uncle Sam we taxpayers pays to train and retain soldiers who do not wish to be Here in the army and talk Only of getting out. To any Soldier who fails in this category primarily Al to e-4 i say this if you joined the army for any. Of the reasons mentioned above Fine but As Long As you Are wearing our proud uniform make to commit ment to Soldier not whlnt., set Steven a Taylor dad or Cugnach we Germany vow member defends Fonda s rights i am a vow member a lifetime member Vietnam Veteran in fact and i have been following the Issue of Jane Fonda and the deep agony the vow has had dealing with her. I want you to know up front that i do not and did not agree with those actions Hal Jane Fonda carried on during the " Nam Connill but i la defend her right to do that.-.-,-. -.-.-. In t that whal defending Freedom is about we Don t agree with All the political differences in the world but we want to keep democracy so that each of us May have a Chance to voice our opinions in this Sam world. The Christian god referred to in the vow ritual is supposedly a forgiving god. He even alluded to the fact thai if one asks for forgiveness forgiveness will be Given. So come on vow Jane Fonda has slated she was wrong and she apologized let s go from there t forget How each of us agonized because we sincerely believed what we did in Nam was the right thing to and when we came Home we faced a very hostile Don t forget whal the real Issue is not that Jane Fonda has a sagging career prob Willsay it is Only fair to add that we should All agree to be Able to bad a Reinach West Germany Price of Toast explained please ask la.
