Bartma Washington Bureau Washington after years of steadfastly resisting the retirement of its older aircraft carriers the defense department has followed its decision to re tire the Coral sea in 1990 with an announcement that the aging Midway will quit sailing in 1992. Under the plan announced last week by Secretary of defense Dick Cheney the Coral sea will be retired in 1990 As the nuclear Carrier Abraham Lincoln is christened. The Midway then would go out of service As the second of several new carriers the George Washington goes into service. Under the Reagan administration the Pentagon was determined to keep the Vintage world Star ii Cra carriers in service through the 1990s in order to maintain a 15-Carrier Battle Force. The Reagan administration s last de sense budget proposed in january kept the carriers in service. But the Bush administration offered an amended budget april 25 that retires the Coral sea by september 1990. Later Cheney told the House armed services committee that the Midway would be retired by september 1992. The announcement pleased sen. Ted Kennedy. A mass. Who with Senate armed services committee chairman Sam Nunn d-ga., has proposed Amend ments to past defense Bills for retiring older carriers to save defense dollars. Obviously. Senator Kennedy is pleased that the Overall concept of his amendment has been adopted said an aide to the sen Ator. The defense department has obviously come to realize that it does t make sense to get to 15 carriers if we Don t have the Money to buy the planes Stock the munitions. And so on. Kennedy s aide and a staff member of the Senate appropriations subcommittee on de sense said one Issue still remained to be re solved which Carrier if any will replace the Midway in Japan As the Only . Aircraft Carrier in a foreign country. What Carrier will be in Japan asked the appropriations staff member. That will be the question. If we put another one there presumably it will be a non nuke nuclear powered " one he said in deference to the japanese sensitivity to nuclear ships and weapons. I think the Only remaining Issue in terms of the Early retirement plan is to Sec if it makes sense to retire the enter prise instead of the Midway said Ken Nedy s aide. He said the reason for that is the nuclear powered Enterprise is facing a 42-month overhaul beginning in Jan uary 1991 that could Cost $2 billion. Retiring the Enterprise would address the Japan Issue for five years since the Midway would stay there he said. You would t Send the Enterprise to Japan that s Kennedy s aide said there were no plans at this time to legislate which Carrier other than the Midway might be retired in 1992. Despite Cheney s statement. Navy officials would say nothing beyond the fact that the Coral sea will be retired under the current budget submission which covers fiscal 1990and 1991."beyond that there s no real plan. The Midway in t an announced line item an official said. However a Navy source said tuesday that the Yokosuka based Midway would be retired in 1992. The source also predicted that the Carrier which belongs to the 7th Fleet would be replaced by another con Ventrally powered Carrier. The Senate armed services subcommittee on projection forces and regional de sense chaired by Kennedy will hold a hearing on aircraft carriers May 15, he said.
