The first word is National which according to the dictionary his several meanings two of which i la list. 1. Pertaining to. Or belonging to a nation As an organized whole. 2. A person who is dedicated to one s own nation or its interests. The second word is Anthem which As one of its definitions Means. A song or hymn of Praise or if taken separately these words Don t seem All that important but when put together they take on much More meaning. National Anthem a song of Praise or loyalty belonging to. And symbolizing a nation and its people. Every Day at Spang Dahlum a we arc Given the privilege of hearing not Only our own but the Ger Man National Anthem As Well. This brings me to the heart of my letter How to respond upon hearing these songs. I will give you some examples and let you decide which is Best. 1. Stop face the music and Render the appropriate Courtesy while reflecting on the meaning of the song what it symbolizes Anc Why you arc stationed Over seas. 2. At the first note run to the nearest open door Way bus. Truck or car to wait for the music to Stop so you can get Back to the More important things you were doing. 3. When driving act As if you Don t hear the music or turn up the stereo so you won t hear the music and quietly reflect on its meaning. The Way we respond to the National Anthem shows All of our nato allies exactly what we think of our country and helps form their opinion of our country. As civilians dependents or military members who arc representing their country i know that the people Reading this letter will be Able to pick the Best choices from the above list. Staff sri. Kenneth a. Cissel a West Germany i am writing this because for the past three years i have held it inside but a person can Only take so much. I am talking about the appalling attitude of people toward Retreat. I am a military dependent and for three years have watched Active duty and dependents Duck inside buildings or make a mad Rush to get off Post before 5 . I m talking about the men and women who presupposed to be Iidle serving our lag. If you can t take a minute a Day to respect old glory Why arc you serving her How do you expect your spouse and children to learn respect for her if you Don to i do Sec Many Active duty people get out of their cars and Salute if they arc unlucky enough to gel stuck inside the gales. But i also notice your spouse and older children stay in the car. Why could it be they arc too embarrassed or ashamed of our great Flag to get out and put their hands Over their heart and show the respect she deserves How arc we supposed to teach the children to respect something that they Sec so Many others abuse the next time you hear Retreat please respect it if not for yourself and your Pride in old glory for the men and women who have Given their lives during War and peace serving her. Jodie banker Kirch cons West Germany who says respect for the Flag is waning one of the specialists at the med happened to be looking out the window and to his horror saw two men lowering the colors. We discovered later they were two workmen who were Given instructions to replace the rope that had be come worn from exposure to time and weather. When they lowered the colors they wadded the Flag subsequently placing it on the ground near the Gate guard office. The specialist who initially saw the workmen called for assistance from another Soldier. Both sol Diers ran outside secured the Flag to the lanyard raised the colors to the original position and then lowered the Flag in proper fashion. After folding the Flag according to pm 22-5, the two explained to the workers the prescribed method of raising and lowering the National colors. I am extremely proud of these two Young soldiers who acted without direction in a patriotic manner. By the Way the two soldiers arc spec. Jerry s. Moore and spec.
