Scan Rooks plans to have something to say. He did saturday when the wild cats beat West Germany in the Heinz Wolle Halle. With 25 seconds left and the score tied at 89-89, Rooks muscled in a rebound Between West Germany s Hasni Gnad and Michael jacket. That gave Arizona the Victory 91-89. The West germans spent the first hair driving Down the Lane on the Sophomore Forward or picking him off with screens. Coach Lute Olson responded by Yelling at Rooks last year s sixth Man whom he expects to fill Cook s shot blocking shoes on the defensive end of the floor. Olson benched Rooks put him Back in yelled some More then benched Rooks again. Yoyo City was not the Type of thing the other Sean Elliott had to Deal with too often. And this Sean had to Deal with a Heinz Wolfe Halle court with out air conditioning thai was More like a Sauna with the temperature in the 80s outside. Scan has asthma very bad and he has a tendency when he starts out in a Strug Gle to let up a Little bit Olson said. He s learning that if hell push himself he can push through that problem. There s no question he can be a real Fine player for he certainly was Fine in the second half saturday. West Germany s Michael jacket drives the Lane Bam Rooks slams the Ball Back in his face. Jacket s team mate Henning Harnisch tries to go Baseline on Rooks whap the Ball and Harnisch arc sent flying. Wildcat Harvey Mason gets a flying body slam Sandwich from two germans and who is there pointing a Finger in Arizona loses rematch Stuttgart West Germany Ste fan Back scored is Points to Lead the West German National to an 85-83 Victory Over Arizona sunday earning the germans a split in their two game series with the wildcats. West Germany was ahead 45-37 at halftime. West Germany Center Sven Meyer s Chest none other than scan Rooks. After putting in his rebound for what would eventually be the winning Points. Rooks clogged up the Middle on the other end of the floor. The germans leery of driving against him after seeing the Ball shoved Back in their faces so Many times tried a jump shot instead. It missed and Rooks wrapped his Hooks around the rebound to scat the win. It will be a matter of if we can get Rooks to play with the intensity he needs to play with Olson said. If he comes along that will give us two 6-11 Guys in Side. He will also give us strength and Power inside that we Haven t had be intensity was not a problem in the Sec Ond half saturday. And then there s that other 6-11 Guy Olson referred to Brian Williams a Transfer from Maryland who was the Atlantic coast conference freshman of the year in 1988. Brian Williams i think will be one of the Best players in the country next year already As a Sophomore Olson said. He s 6-11, he s 235 pounds he runs the floor. He beats our guards in sprints. Just a tremendous Williams averaged 12.5 Points and 6.0 rebounds a game for the terrapins in 1988, then sat out last season after trans Ferring to Arizona. Rooks thinks the addition of Williams will help take the heat off him. There s not going to be any pressure on me Rooks said. We be got another 6-11 Guy who is very very Good in Brian Williams. We just have to pull together As a team. Everybody is going to have Topick up the Slack for Sean and pressure on these Young cats is what Olson hoped for on this Lour. So far the heat has t burned his Cool cats. The great thing from our standpoint was we get to Sec How they la react when the pressure s on Olson said. In France in the first game it was a close game until there were about seven or eight minutes left and then we pulled out and won by Loor ii. In the second game we were Down by 12 or 15 Points brought it Back to three and just missed an interception that could have tied it with 20 seconds left. So they be been very very competitive when the game was on the line. That s a Nice sign for not bad for a Bunch of role players and Seldom used freshman from last sea son s Pac-10 powerhouse. Balanced scoring was a pleasant Surprise saturday with Jud Buechler leading the Way with 20, Rooks getting 18, Brian David add ing 13, Wayne Womack 12, and Ron Curry and Mason 10 apiece. And the wildcats made the winning run with Buechler and Matt Muhlebach who Olson says arc his two Best play ers watching from splinters Villa be cause of foul trouble. It was a Chance for a lot of Guys who were in the shadows last year because of a and scan Curry said. The balanced scoring is definitely going to have to be a part of our game next this gives us a Chance to Sec what some of the younger players can do who did not have a Chance to play for us a whole lot this year Olson said. Four of the eight kids we had were freshman this last year. Curry played very Little to Mack played very Little. Matt thick played but not in pressure situations at the end of the Rooks seemed to enjoy the pressure and the banging the most. Eve though he got in Meyer s face after Mason went Down Rooks downplayed the scuffle. It was t illegal Rooks said. When 6-11 scan Rooks is out of Elliott s Shadow. And part of Arizona s new wave a lot of fouls Aren t being called there s pushing going talking and a thing like that just sets it off. It helps us to play More physical be cause Germany was a very physical team and the refs let it become a very physical game and you have to adjust.
