European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 24, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 letters dear Ann Landers this is prompted by the letter from the woman in West Virginia who was concerned about letting her Young son visit her father in Law who had molested his Daugh ters when they were Young. You said under no Circum stances should you permit your son to be alone with that Man no matter what he says. It s too big a bless you for that answer Ann. I am not a psychologist but i know something about this subject both As a victim and As an offender. I be had several years of therapy and have been judged Safe to be around children. But i still avoid situations where 1 might be tempted. 1 know myself too Well. T wish the woman who wrote could talk to my younger Brothers and Sisters or to my cousins or Tome. We All were molested by grandpa. If you saw the Man and listened to him you would say he was everybody s idea of the perfect Grandfather the last person in the world you would pick out As a child molester. I look like the perfect father. But i molested my two Young daughters Over a period of seven years. When they said no More 1 started in with Myson. He was 2 years old at the time. Please Ann Tell the Mother who wrote not to Back Down an Inch. If grandpa tries to talk her into letting the child visit him she should look him in the Eye and say the answer is no for now and forever. Don t Ever bring up the subject travelled that Rodin Tennessee dear travelled my mail on this subject was incredible. And nearly even one said the same thing Tell her not to fall for it no matter what grandpa says. Don t Trust him child molesters Are also great i Hope the Mother sees this column and is firm in her resolve to keep grandpa away from All the children. That of course was the advice i gave and the readers validated it. Dear Ann Landers who started that incredibly vulgar custom of the Bride and Groom shoving the first piece of wedding cake into one another s face at a reception where this was done recently the Groom looked positively foolish with icing and cake stuck in his Mustache and clouding his eyeglasses. The Bride did not fare much better. But they both laughed heartily and carried on As if it was All one huge joke. I might add the parents looked horrified and most of the guests did t think it was funny. In my opinion such childish behaviour detracts from the Beauty and dignity of the occasion and it makes the Bride and Groom look like a couple of nitwits. At one reception the Groom did this to his Bride after they had promised each other that they would t. She kept her Promise but he did not. The Bride ended up in tears. Everyone Felt embarrassed and sad for her. What a Way to Start married life i Hope you will com ment Ann. I.p., Sonora Calif. Dear Sonora there is nothing funny or Loving about newlyweds shoving cake into one another s face. I believe it s an attempt to mask hostility and i would worry about a couple who engaged in this idiotic practice. Los angelas Tunas syndicated columnist Landers welcomes Pouf letters. You can write to her in Cere of the stars and stripes. Apo 09211. . Forces tuition for College courses explained i would like to know Why it costs so much to attend College courses in Europe. It was quite a Shock to me when my education coun Selor told me what it would Cost for a class at the University of Maryland. With the governmental Tui Tion assistance program a financial Aid program that pays 75 percent of tuition costs for enlisted members the course will still Cost me More than $130. This is about average for the courses and roughly three times More than i paid at my last stateside duty station for similar classes. It is hard to imagine How a family member can afford school when tuition assistance in t available. There arc Federal Aid programs but the Pell Grant an guaranteed student Aid loan is for use by students who arc at least on a half time basis. Supplemental education Opportunity Grants and Perkins Loans can be awarded to less than half time students but Early application submission is necessary to ensure that the Money is there when it is needed. Tragically Only one in 100 people submits financial assistance applications and those that Don t must Sac Rifice part of their budget to meet the High Cost of education. As a Well established american school Here in Europe the University of Maryland should be Able to offer an affordable curriculum. As it stands the University of Maryland has a monopoly on the traditional Basic Core of studies. Perhaps introducing other schools into the european Community can bring the Price downward. As a combat Soldier there arc a lot of obstacles in my path toward higher education. I am Lucky at this time to be Able to attend class. I have no extensive Field duty for a while my Battery commander is highly supportive of education and the course i need is Avail Able. I have been slowly accumulating credits and soon i will have my associate s degree. To meet my educational goals i must pay the Price. But for those people who have had Little or no posts Condary education the Cost is enough to scare them away. Spec. Jason m. Rone Baum older West Germany editor s note Joe Arden director univer sity of Maryland european division replies the writer is properly concerned about tuition costs. The University of Maryland Hopes the information provided in this response will be helpful. At colleges and universities in the United states the tuition charged to students commonly covers Only a Small percentage of the student s actual education costs. Much of the larger portion of the real Cost of attending College or University is provided by tax support gifts and or endowments. At Public institutions for example tuition alone typically covers no More than 40 percent of the actual Cost and at Many institutions far less. Classes offered by colleges and universities at is. Military installations in Europe however Are supported entirely by the tuition charged to students. Fortunately As the writer notes the military tuition assistance to program pays 75 percent of the tuition costs of Active duty military personnel. For the typical Maryland course three semester hour Active duty servicemen Bers pay 25 percent or s61.50 of the total Cost of $246, not $130 As suggested in the Teller. The writer correctly Points out that family members an generally not eligible for tuition assistance. Each academic year however thousands of full pay Mary land students in Europe do receive various forms of Federal financial assistance. The european division also has a growing scholarship program including a number of scholarships reserved exclusively for family members of enlisted personnel. Even if Federal assistance and or scholarship funds Are not available a full pay student enrolled full time 30 semester hours a year with Maryland in Europe during 1988-89 would pay less than $2,500 in total tuition. This amount while certainly a considerable sum for Many family members compares very favor ably with tuition Rales at most colleges and universities in the United states including both Public and private institutions. I would like to encourage the writer to Contact a local Maryland Field representative or our Headquarters in Heidelberg. Be will be pleased to provide full information concerning All Federal assistance Grams and All scholarship opportunities. Pen pals please put Lith my name in your pen Pat column.
