European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 26, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 the stars and stripes Friday. May 26,1989 outdoor adventures the years add up with Roebuck Hunting Roebuck at this time of year is always an interesting experience mainly because of the various considerations the Hunter must make when identifying any particular Buck that comes along. This identification is called an Sprecher in Ger Man and often the Hunter is required to do More during this process than simply determine whether the animal is male or female. So How is this supposed to be interesting to you the american Hunter in Europe Here s How. When you go out to Hunt your Buck with a forester from the state forestry department he will often put you in a stand High in the Trees give you some instructions then Tell you hell be in a stand several Hun dred meters Down the path. His instructions May be to shoot any Buck that comes along. That May be fairly easy to do Assum ing you can Tell a Buck from a Doe. Bucks have ant lers docs usually Don to although there have been rare cases of female Roc Deer having Antlers. But then he May Tell you to shoot Only a yearling or Only a Buck that s at least 3 or 4 years old. Or maybe hell say you can shoot a Sechser six Pointer As Long As he is older than 2 or 3 years. If this Hap pens you re in for a Challenge and some fun. There Are several indicators to look for to help determine age. They Are not strict rules but can help you in your judgment. Color is one of those indicators. Young Bucks of 1 Mark Swearengen to 2 years usually turn their coals from Winter Gray to Bright red earlier than the older animals. So at this time of year a Buck with considerable Gray in his fur suggests he is at least 3 years old. Later in june and july when they have All changed color the Buck that s Bright red is probably 2 years old or less. The older ones tend to be a Light Sandy red. Antler formations can be an age Indica Tor but the thing to look for is concentration of mass rather than the number of Points. A Young Buck Antlers will tend to be thick and massive from the base All the Way up to the end. The older Buck will tend to show thickness in the lower area of the ant lers with thinner development at the top. Remember the number of Points on Antlers hardly gives a clue to age. Also remember As i be suggested several times these arc and spoiling the characteristics is not always easy. It can require considerable study through the binoculars and time. The Muff Fleck. Or Lack of one is another Indica Tor. This is a Small fairly distinct White Patch just above the nose. Yearlings rarely show one. It s More obvious on 2-Ycar-old Bucks. The Muttel Tluck blends in with other facial colors As the Buck Ages beyond 3 years so Llinat by age 5 and beyond the entire face will be Light Gray almost White. So if you be been told you May shoot any Buck thai is 4 years old or More and one comes along with a clearly defined and Bright red coat he s probably too Young. Sometimes the animal s behaviour can be an age indicator. Yearlings and 2-year-Olds often act uru Hig or restless and jumpy. Sudden head movements arc common. The Buck May Curnc quickly out in the open then suddenly dash Back in the Woods Only to return in five minutes or so. A Buck of 4 years or More tends to be More deliberate. He May be slower to come out in the open. Although he will be totally Alert he normally will not appear nervous or excited. If you re new to Hunting in Europe you re in for some fun trying to determine your Buck s age As you study him through inc glasses. Think about All the indicators and then make your judgment. You la find yourself learning a lot As you gain experience. Don t become anxious. Just take it slow and Deli Crale like the old Buck and i m sure you will enjoy your Hunting. Imagine All the fun you la have telling the Story. Waidmann Sycil.
