European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 14, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday. September 14, 1989 the stars and stripes Page 11 sinn Landerd letters dear Ann Landers i have been Reading your column for several years hoping someone would write in with my problem. It has t appeared so i assume i am the Only one who has it. I m getting desperate Ann. Please help me. My husband is a wonderful person but he has developed a quirk that drives me crazy. The Man is hooked on water. I believe most doctors recommend eight glasses a Day. Well Albert drinks at least 16. He carries a thermos every where to Church the movies even if we go for a Short drive. At night he has a thermos by his Pillow. The drinking is not what bothers me. It s the consequences that cause so much embarrassment. The Man cannot sit through a concert a movie a play a lecture a Church service a Ball game or even a conversation that lasts More than 20 minutes. He is always excusing himself. The minute we arrive anywhere Albert starts looking for the bathroom. If we Are there for two hours he has made at least three trips. I am tired of people asking me what is wrong with Albert is he All right my husband is 65 years old and in Good health. Is he putting a Strain on his bladder is he wearing out his kidneys what can be done to get him to do More moderate san Antonio dear san Antonio my consultant is or. Craig Shadur a Ilar Vard trained kidney specialist in Des Molnes. Or. Shadur says Albert cannot Hurt himself by drink ing 16 glasses of water a Day but there May be a medi Cal reason for his physical checkup. One possibility is an unusual Type of Dia Bolcs. If Albert gets a clean Bill of health i Hope you Hill simply refuse to be embarrassed by his frequent absences. When people question you about it bad taste simply say Why Don t you ask him dear Ann Landers please explain to me How cheating and lying to a spouse can build self esteem. Years ago my husband told me that he Felt like a loser until he met a woman at work who was not very attractive. She Felt As if she did t have much going for her. They decided to build each other up by having a affair. It went on for a number of years before i found out about it. His explanation was very painful but wanting desperately for the marriage to work 1 accepted it and stayed with him. Recently i be heard this same theory from a couple of my friends. They said having an affair was the bes thing that Ever happened to them because it built up their sagging egos and made them feel desirable. Ann am i crazy or just Plain out of step with the world i be always thought self esteem was built by being with the Best person you can be. Now i am told that it can be acquired by being dishonest and unfaithful. What goes on disillusioned in Illinois dear Illinois an affair May inflate the ego for about 30 minutes but when reality sets in the Rosy glow is replaced by feelings of guilt and emptiness. It s a real Downer Honey. Slick with your ideals. Los Angeles times syndicated be pm Mil Landers welcomes your tetters you can wine to her in care of the stars and stripes. Apo 09211. . Forces writer feels an to vital to isolated area i am writing Thi letter in response to a recent letter dealing with the termination of an. I am stationed at the 629lh tactical control flight. West Germany. Our unit is a geographically separated unit. Our support unit is a very Small air station he Swisch Oldendorf. We do not receive the an signals at my duly Loca Tion but we do receive it quite Well at the support base where the majority ofus live close to. The services Are excellent. The hard efforts arc Well appreciated. I feel that this service is one of the most important privileges we have stationed Here at Hes Swisch Oldendorf. 1 believe that an to is vital to service members and dependents morale. We depend on this service daily. Because he Swisch Oldendorf air station is so Small with a Bare minimum of facilities an to reception is so valuable to personnel and family members that it dictates where the family will live. The first question All housing referral offices arc asked is can you get an the families would rather give up nicer or larger quarters off base just to get the an to signal. My spouse has been much happier since removed off the Economy into base housing where we can receive an. 1 myself View it daily. Unlike most of your writers we Are not so Lucky to be assigned to the densely populated military areas such As Frankfurt Wiesbaden or Kaiserslautern. These locations have their problems but there arc Many benefits which these fortunate individuals take for granted benefits which isolated units Here up North would he glad to have. We like to Call the Southern area mini the facilities arc endless countless hospitals and medical care Large exchanges commissaries recreation centers travel services. Pizza hut Bur Ger King Wendy a Kentucky Fried Chicken Mcdonalds an much More. Come to he Swisch Oldendorf before you complain again. Our whole support base could fit in the Rhein main Exchange shopping area. We drive two hours to the nearest larger facility for Basic items. I work at a site 22 Miles from the support base. We Don t have a Chow Hall Burger bar Exchange or any thing. Just a place to go to work. There Are very few privileges Here for us to enjoy. Very Lew benefits that mean anything to the military members because they Aren t available for our use. But one privilege that makes a tremendous differ ence is the availability of an to. A touch of Home. We Aren t isolated from the United states. I have viewed military to in the far East Middle East Cen trial America and twice now in Germany. It has made the assignments a lot More pleasant and tolerable. We count on an for their services. Especially us volunteers for overseas assignments. It is a definite Factor to deciding to Volunteer yourself and your family for an overseas assignment. Gary j. It does not meet the need of the elderly except in very few cases but it will be a direct tax on All retirees with taxable income. We recall that the 1988 tax Reform act made half of All social Security payments taxable income for sin Gle persons receiving $25.000 or More and for couples receiving $32,000 or More from All sources. This May not be so bad for those who retired before the social a lesson from history the 50th anniversary of an extremely important Date in world history is upon . I 1939, is commonly accepted As the Date world War ii began in have already seen several articles in the stars & stripes and other publications mentioning the occasion. These Arti cles my Calendar All mention that Germany invaded Poland completely True but Only half the Story. No one mentions that while Germany was invading Poland from the West the red army of the soviet Union was invading Poland from the East.
