Although their intentions May be Good they end up doing a great Deal of harm. During world War ii i lived in los Angeles. It was an exciting place to be. Thousands of soldiers sailors and marines were Here waiting to be shipped to the South Pacific. There was always something going on at the Hollywood palladium. We danced our worries away to the music of the big bands Glenn Miller Harry James. Tommy Dorsey Duke Ellington and Kay Kaiser. No music since those Days has been As Good. I was 19 and  my High school sweetheart was already overseas. We weren t engaged but we wrote to one another three or four times a week. Then one night at the palladium i met Ken Morri son a handsome Marine. It was magic. We danced for hours and talked All night. Ken was the Man i had been dreaming about All my life. We were together every possible minute for three glorious weeks before he was shipped out. 1 will never forget his scary cycad smile when he promised to write. We knew that we belonged together and prayed that one Day it would be possible. I was living with dad at the time mom was dead and i worked As a Secretary. Several weeks went by and i asked dad every evening when i came from the office any mail for me there were plenty of let ters from Bud but nothing from Ken. Every time i read about some awful Battle involving the marines my heart Sank. After six months and no word from Ken i was certain he had been killed. Bud came Home in 1946 and we were married. We had three children and 1 knew that i had settled for a stable but Dull existence. I never stopped mourning for Ken. He was the True love of my life. When dad died in 1958,1 went to his House to sort out his belongings and Settle his Small estate. In the attic was an old trunk. As i was digging through his papers and personal effects i ran across a bundle of letters addressed to me. There were dozens of them held together by rubber bands. When i discovered that they were from Ken i thought my heart would break. Then i heard my children s voices in the next room and i knew that i had to throw the letters away unopened. It took All the strength i could Muster but i did it. When my oldest child was is. 1 divorced Bud. By that time my marriage had become so sterile and lifeless i could t Bear it. 1 remarried in 1970. It was a poor Choice and we divorced in 1985. Now 1 occupy myself with Volunteer work at the Hospital and a few classes at the Community College. I am lonely and very sad when i think of what my life could have been. I often daydream about Ken and Hope that he found a wonderful girl is happily married and. Like me has grandchildren to love. We arc All citizens of a global environment despite our nationalities and wasted resources in one country even one that is not our own Are resources lost to the whole world. Glass and paper recycling centers arc All Over Ger Many even in the tiny villages of the Eiful Region. We should be using these receptacles for All of our throwaway jars and bottles. Each Container we discard adds to the congestion of the landfills and landfills have limits. Recently an air Force times article discussed these limits while presenting the dangers to the environment that non biodegradable plastics represent. Plastics arc Petroleum based products and some of us have not forgotten the Shock of in a gallon gasoline and the Long Long lines to buy it at any Price. The production of Petroleum has a great Price attached to it . Valdez Alaska s recent spill crisis the loss of human lives on drilling platforms so that anything we can do to conserve it is a valuable contribution. Dis carding re usable plastic is wasting Petroleum. We can each contribute by thinking of the world and its resources As finite As having definite limits and participate in recycling and conservation pro Grams. We Don t have to let the water gush from the faucet while we Brush our Teeth. We can turn off the water until we need it. We Don t have to Wash Small laundry loads in full washers and we Don t have to leave the water running constantly to Wash and rinse our dishes. We have choices and we can decide to conserve the resources of the world whether they arc German american. Italian or mexican. If we Don t make this decision our children might not have a Choice. Down Here in Naples. We have no such thing As arms. If we want Money we get it tuesday through saturday never after 1630 if we want an account loan balance we wait some times an hour or so. The Only american banking facility is the credit Union. There is no other place to go if we do not want to wait or if for some reason we Are not satisfied with the service. We do not have Mcdonalds pizza hut Kentucky Fried Chicken etc., although we have Wendy s. A word of advice try your Host nation s native restau rants instead of american fast food All the time. There is no Navy Lodge or anything close to that. If you arc visiting Naples count on spending at least $100 a night in a hotel. Every week i read complaints form somebody grip ing about one inconvenience or another. Try going without water every other Day All summer Long. Flush your toilet with a bucket and water stored in the Bath tub. You got that right no bathing in bathtubs. We Bathe with water stored in bottles. Not once have i read someone from Down Here writ ing in to complain Why i Don t know. Could it be that we have been stationed at places other than fifth Avenue come on people quit complaining make the Best of your tour. Lord knows we arc Down Here name withheld Naples Italy my tired of being bogeyman for kids i want to share an experience i had that every my faces at least once in his career. I was on duty and checked out for lunch at one of the dining facilities in the Nurnberg Community. I received my meal and proceeded to a table. There was a couple with a Small child of about 4 years. The first thing i heard from the Parent was you better be Good or that my will take you away to  the child then started crying loudly and was obviously terrified. It was so bad that i was inclined to move to the other Side of the facility so As not to frighten the child any longer. I come from a family with a police officer As a father. In this aspect i m probably different than most. I was taught that Policman Are not there for the sole purpose of taking you away to jail but to help you and Render assistance if you need it. So i say to All the parents with Small children we arc not the bogeyman so Stop using the words military police synonymously.
