West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and East German Premier Hans Modrow also reflected on the dramatic changes that swept East Germany and other Eastern european countries in recent months. The past year was the year of the big transformation in the history of Europe Kohl said in a nationally televised new year s address. For us germans but also for All our friends in the West and the East the opening of the Berlin Wall and now also of the Brandenburg Gate were fascinating events he said referring to the nov. 8 breaching of the Wall and the dec. 22 opening of the historic Gate Between East and West Berlin.
