European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 08, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse                                The stars and stripes Ann Landers dear Ann Landers i am 26 years old and have been married for five years. I j have two wonderful children and a Beautiful Home. I quit my Job when i had my i first baby because it was too hard to work and care for the child. I my husband i la Call him Steve makes a Good living As a Salesman. He travels during the week and on weekends he some time stars out of town because he says it s cheaper than flying Home Friday and out again on monday. Also he says he enjoys visiting with old  this weekend stuff has been happening three week ends out of four which Means he is Home Only two or three Days out of the month. Steve drinks scotch and smokes pot regularly. This runs about $100 a week. Last year he bought a Bike for $300. Meanwhile i buy my clothes at garage sales and secondhand shops. No matter How hard i try i can t seem to make ends meet. Steve says he can buy anything he wants because he s the one who is busting his butt to earn a living while i m silting Home on mine doing  last weekend i went to my parents and told them i am considering divorce. They said i could t expect any help from them because they told me not to marry Steve and i would t listen. They also say divorce would be very hard on the children and i owe it to them to keep our family together. I Don t want to do anything to Hurt my kids Ann but i m not sure that living a miserable and unhappy life is Good for them either. I m really confused. Can you give me some advice confused in Illinois dear Illinois your marriage sounds like a dog s breakfast. Your husband needs to grow up and behave like a married Man instead of self indulgent Little boy. And you come in for part of the blame for allowing him to gel away with such outrageously immature behaviour. You need joint counselling. Go to the Clergyman who performed the wedding ceremony and ask for guidance. Or ask your family physician to recommend a Counselor. Between the booze and the pot and the prolonged absences from Home you Don t have much of a husband and your children Don t have much of a father. If he won t go for counselling go alone. Do the right  the writer says the film docs the wrong  the film was not the wrong thing but a highly pro Vocative portrayal of what is happening in America today. If we Don t attack the subject of racism head on the Way Spike Lee did then i most certainly would say that the two races Black and White will never come together and will always be bitter enemies toward one another. The truth of racism must come out and must be brought out openly. Many of us both Black and White live Day to Day thinking there is no racial problem in America. However there still is. By using Malcolm x and Martin Luther King jr., Lee gives a Sterling exam ple of what he thinks the outcome of the racial prob Lem could be violence or peace Lake your pick. I think eventually everyone will see thai Mal Colm x was nol a violent person bul a humanitarian and a Freedom fighter who fought for inc liberation of african americans. We As african americans should be Black 24 hours a Day seven Days a week 365 Days a year and be proud of who we Are and whal we have and will accomplish. Stay Black together and Strong for this is the Only Way that we can Rescue and reconstruct our history and culture. As for role models Spike Lee s next film is entitled love supreme which is a portrait of the late great saxophonist John Coltrane one of inc geniuses of jazz music. John Coltrane is the perfect role Model for Many Black musicians As Well As for anyone seeking to learn about the history of the Only True american Art form jazz. John Coltrane related his music to its origins in Africa. I think that everyone should take a step Back maybe even a couple of Steps Back to the classroom of Black history and Black culture. The movie allows the world to experience life in what is commonly referred to As the ghetto. The account is very accurate and i am sure that a predominant number of african americans greatly identify with the film. In fact the movie stirs the soul in much the Way that viewing a family photo album does. 1 would think that White America would appreciate the Opportunity to eavesdrop on the african american experience to 117 and understand what makes those people tick. Finally i wish White people would Stop trying to make african americans choose Between Malcolm x and Martin Luther King or. They both wanted the same thing for our people to be treated As human beings. They simply differed on How to achieve that goal. The rioting is the obvious Story line bul if one looks deeper he or she will see that not one of the Black male actors portrays a positive role in the film. In my Opin spoke Lee Ion. Spike acc has managed to have his cake and Cal it too. He has satisfied the Young Black Community with a false sense of Victory in a riot scene that acc9mplishes nothing. In is similar to the celluloid i clerics of the Rocky movies which produced a great while Champi on on screen. He has appeased inc White Community by stereotyping Black males As loafers and drunks irresponsible and violent. Lee s film even managed to kill another Black male As if we Don t Sec enough of that already by some Over zealous police officers.
