German opposition gets Cabinet seats Berlin a East Germany s parliament added eight members of pro democracy groups to communist Premier Hans Modrow s government monday  the opposition seals in the cab inet or the first time in the country s 40 year history. The communists now hold less than half of the 36 Cabinet scats. Also on monday. Parliament banned the ultralight Republican party of West Germany from operating in East Ger Many. The party had been hoping to at tract major voter support during upcoming elections. On sunday the communist party changed its name to the party of demo cratic socialism and promised to hand Over $600 million in assets to the govern ment in an attempt to refurbish its image before the elections. The first free ballot ing in the country s history is set for March is. In an address to parliament Modrow said monday that German reunification is inevitable although Many obstacles need to be overcome because the two German nations have vastly different Legal and financial structures. He said his proposal last week that a United Ger Many be Neutral was not meant to be the final word on the matter. I never believed that All Points of my proposals would be accepted by every one he said. The United states and other nato countries insist that a United Germany be a part of the Western Alliance. West Germany has said that while it seeks German Unity it will not leave nato. I made my proposals on unification. Following Modrow s address parliament approved his recommendations that the eight opposition officials be added to his Cabinet. The communist party now holds 17 of 36 scats in the new government. Chancellor Helmut Kohl also has said he is planning to stump for Candi dates. The communists in particular have objected to the plans saying such a pc Arancis amount to unfair interference in East German affairs.
