Mayor Barry indicted on perjury drug charges Washington a mayor Marion Barry undergoing trial mint in Florida following his january arrest for drug Possession was indicted thursday on eight counts of perjury and Possession of a controlled suds acc. A Federal grand jury handed Down the indictment following a 14-month investigation by the Fri and the City s police department. The investigation began after Barry was discovered visiting the hotel room of an associate. Charles Lewis who later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine. Barry was said to have told the grand jury that he had never used cocaine. Lewis had testified to the contrary. The indictment comes four weeks after Barry was arrested on a Misdemeanour cocaine Possession charge. Barry is undergoing treatment for substance abuse at a Florida clinic and has turned Over the Day to Day operations of the District government to the City administrator. Barry is up for re election this year and has not indicated since his arrest whether he will seek another term. The indictment charged that during a Jan. 19, 1989. Grand jury appearance Barry lied under oath by stating he was not aware that Lewis was involved with drugs and by stating that the two men had not exchanged cocaine. Lewis who cooperated with the investigation was recently sentenced to 15 months in prison on drug charges. Each of the three false declaration charges carries a five year prison term and a maximum Fine of$250,000. Four charges against Barry involve alleged posses Sion of cocaine Between dec. 16 and dec. 22, 1988, the period when Barry was Risling Lewis at the Down town ramada inn. The fifth drug Possession charge stems from Barry s Jan. 18 arrest at the Vista International hotel where he was visiting one time Girlfriend Rasheeda Moore. Each of the Misdemeanour Possession charges carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a Fine of $100,000. Barry has steadfastly denied using drugs. At an emotional appearance following his arrest he admitted to having a problem with alcohol but never said anything about illegal drugs.
