European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 9, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes letters a army efforts in stress treatment clarified Page 11ann Landers the recent article a psychologist helps fort Bragg Aid combat troops included some useful information on Post traumatic stress. The psychological Impact of facing danger injury and death should be of concern to All of us in the military Community. A however the Story contained one inaccuracy. The fort Bragg project is by no Means a the army a first attempt to prevent Post traumatic stress the prevention of Post traumatic stress disorder through research education and clinical intervention has been a serious concern of Many army organizations for some years now. I can to describe All that is going on in the Field but would like to mention briefly the work of my own organization the . Army medical research unit Europe us Amru a. During the last two years us Amru a has studied five fatal training accidents that exposed soldiers to sudden death personal danger and other types of traumatic stress. We have interviewed roughly 200 Usa eur soldiers affected by these accidents and they have talked honestly with us about some very painful experiences. We have also studied the special stresses experienced by health care personnel providing medical treatment under the challenging conditions imposed by training accidents and by combat. These soldiers and their commanders have Given us their wholehearted cooperation. Discussing their experiences with us was neither convenient nor easy but they did it because they wanted to help other soldiers who might face such stresses in the future. Analysing the data from this research has Given us insights about How soldiers and units recover from traumatic stress and what leaders and professional caregivers can do to help. We Are learning More every Day and what we know is being fed Back into the army Community. Our principal Means of communication is written publications. When time permits however we also teach professional development classes. During 1989, 1 offered training on recovery from traumatic stress to about 750 Usa eur personnel a social workers behavioural science specialists chaplains chaplain assistants and unit leaders. Although these classes Are difficult and can be emotionally draining for participants we receive More requests for them than we can accept. Although our work is Only part of the big picture i believe it gives an idea of the depth and breadth of the army a concern. Interest in traumatic stress is not limited to a few a experts a but rather is shared by people from Many professional groups and from across the rank Structure. Soldiers Are sometimes called to face extraordinary stress and they should know that they Arentt going to be left alone with it. A Mary p. Tyler . Heidelberg West Germany a writer feels sharing in history important i certainly Hope that parents have been sharing the stars and stripes with their children the past few months. So much history has been passing through those pages. Our country has been committed for Over 40 years to bringing peace and Freedom to this part of the world. German friends told us that they did no to believe that our idea of peace through strength was right. But. Now they know that it was the Only Way. Having the courage to commit ones self to an Ideal is sometimes Tough but courage and commitment Are part of our american heritage. Take for instance Norvell Smiths stand against Chicago gang environment. What a lesson in courage and personal commitment this 14-year-old from Chicago is exhibiting. There Are few adults who would have that courage and fewer children who if they had it would exhibit it yet we All cheer from the sidelines because we know that she is saying and doing what is right and necessary if we want our country to remain healthy and intact. The article on Abraham Lincoln in the same Issue mentions How he was Ridi Fulcd a not Only for his beliefs but because he was a country boy and talked differently. He did not fare Well in his debates with Stephen Douglas and he lost the Senate race. Yet he went on to win the votes of his countrymen and his words though he talked like a country fellow Are carved in Stone. We Are a Young country and we make mistakes. But through Reading and discussion with parents children can come to know what the truly important ideals and values Are in life. They can grow into courageous and committed individuals ready to build the kind of nation that will continue to help Lead the world through cooperation to peace. A Susanne m. Dear Ann Landers i know you done to run newspapers you Only work for them but since you have Access to a lot of editors and publishers maybe you will deliver this message from some very important people a their subscribers. Most folks get their news these Days from to. True. To does no to cover events in depth the Way newspapers do but Many of us Are too Busy to read detailed news stories anyway. We buy the paper for the comics and the columns these we can to get on to. My pet Peeve and the Peeve of lots of other readers. I m sure is when the paper is changed around so we can t find our favorite columns especially yours. Why Don t they leave things alone it is frustrating to pick up the paper and discover that they have changed the format around and nothing is where it used to be. I used to be Able to find you in a minute because of your picture. Well now that a gone Vout re in a different place every Day and i am a one disgusted Reader dear disgusted i am a Reader of newspapers As Well As a columnist and i appreciate your comments. Some papers need to be redesigned and when a new editor comes in he or she does the Job. There Are instances however when the paper looks great and simply for the Sake of change the paper is ripped apart. This often upsets subscribers because Thev done to like the new look. A be that As it May my editors do not Tell me what to write and i would not presume to Tell them How to put out the paper. I will print your letter however because it is important that your opinion be considered. Thanks for writing. Dear Ann Landers i disagree with a column you printed advising visitors not to bring articles to sick people telling of cures and new methods of treatment. One sunday afternoon two years ago. I was having a wonderful time sailing. Two hours later. I was in a Hospital facing the amputation of my lower left leg. Your column said visitors should not bring articles or give advice to hospitalized friends. I done to agree. I can to Tell you How Manv wonderful thoughtful friends brought articles that really helped me. They told of amputees who had won sporting events. I was especially thrilled to read about a College quarterback who had lost a foot and is now playing football. These Success stories gave me the encouragement i needed to face the future with Hope and optimism. Today two years later i have a prosthesis and am Back at the gym six times a week. No one would know that i Wear a prosthesis unless they happened to be in the locker room. Ann. Please done to Tell people not to bring articles to sick people. Those articles helped me recover and i am Ever so grateful to the people who brought them. A . Boston dear . Hat an upbeat letter in a glad you wrote to Tell Jour Story. Maybe we should t quibble about semantics but there s a difference Between being sick and being injured. The articles i object to Are those that describe some half baked cure and shake the patient s Confidence in his or her doctor. I m sure you will agree that there s a difference.
