European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 16, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 letters a no feels career gis face Tough years with recent talks of military reductions and cutbacks to numbers that most of us did not think would Ever take place and with the Eastern bloc nations going through remarkable changes towards democratic beliefs you have to wonder what the future holds. I think that one thing is Clear without a doubt there will be major cuts in the military base closings and drastic budget slashing. What will become of nato what will be the troop strength left in overseas nations what will the armed forces aim their attention towards the next five or 10 years hold a great Deal of mystery As far As the military is concerned. As an no in the army i think it is time for us All to perform a self evaluation of our work habits goals standards and our Overall commitment to the military. A race for slots and promotions is in the near future. There is going to be a major overload in the number of people wanting to stay in the military. There is just not enough room for everyone. We All know of people who want out. 1 Hope that Dod will find a Way to allow these people out without endless red tape. Then there Are those who can to seem to adjust to the military but done to want out because they would have to go to work for real. And last there arc those who fall under the a Good old boy Quot system who seem to make their it test Cut weigh in and no or look like they Are top of the line when in reality they done to meet most of the standards. We All know of people who fall into any of these areas. Its one of those people who May be holding a Job or a Slot you need to stay in. All cos should be aware of the fact that if you want to stay in you a better be ready to Shine in All areas. There will be a very Strong need for All areas of evaluation to be True to the letter. What you think is helping your buddy May just keep you out in the cold. No ers it tests ranges sets weight standards etc., All have to be True. The time for hard and honest self evaluation is Here. A new level of standards is in the works now is the time to find your place in it. A sgt . Tatum Heilbronn West Germany Arm Landers dear Ann Landers my wife and i have been married less than a year. She has grown up with cats dogs rabbits a horse a couple of turtles and even a Raccoon. When her 12-year-old persian cat died three months ago she went into a depression. The doctor said a get another i bought her a Cocker Spaniel. The dog is adorable but he insists on drinking out of the toilet. Did no to you run a column two years ago warning readers to keep the lid of the toilet Down because a cat or dog might drown in it my wife says i must have dreamed this because it makes no sense. Please Ann run it again. A Dallas dilemma dear Dallas it Wasny to two years ago it was 1986. And it Wasny to a dog it was a Parrot. Here a the letter and i Hope it helps. Dear Ann Landers our Parrot Clark shinned up the rear of our toilet tank onto our bathroom counter a his favorite roosting spot when we Are in or near the bedroom. While putting the groceries away i was distracted. When i returned to collect Clark i discovered him a stiff wet and shivering a floating on his Side in the toilet bowl. He was Glassy eyed and appeared to be suffering from severe exhaustion. Clark has one clipped Wing and Only one foot with a full quotient of toes so he does no to balance very Well under the Best of conditions. My husband and i rushed Clark to the animal clinic for emergency anti stress drugs and oxygen. He stayed overnight in the incubator and recovered sufficiently so we were Able to take him Home the following afternoon. From now on you can be sure the toilet seat lid will remain closed in our House. A Learned the hard Way in Miami dear Miami several readers wrote to Tell me they were stunned to discover rare creatures in their toilet bowls. I mean beavers rats skunks a Raccoon and even a Snake. Others reported that their cats and dogs nearly drowned in their toilets. A paediatrician wrote to say children have been known to drown in the darned things. So folks the verdict is Clear a the toilet seat and lid should be Down when the toilet is not in use. Case closed. Dear Ann Landers Many people carry vital medical pills in fancy Gold and Silver Pill boxes. If the Pill carried is nitroglycerine used for angina a heart attacks these people Are in big trouble. This particular Pill should be in an airtight Container at All times or it loses its Potency. My wife takes this Pill for another problem. When she had to use the Pill recently she missed the burning sensation under the Tongue that she is accustomed to. She mentioned this to her doctor and he asked if she was carrying the pills in a fancy Box. When she said yes a he told her the pills had lost their effectiveness. So Ann please Tell your readers that they must carry vital medication in Pill form in an airtight Container. Not every Pill will be affected in this Way but Why take a Chance ?., Wantagh . Dear . I called my trusty pharmacist and he said pills for heart problems mainly nitroglycerine Are the ones to be concerned about. These pills should be kept in the bottle they came in or an airtight Container. C creators Syndicate a writer feels past is i recently watched a program that stated that the teaching of history was becoming a a obsolete because of the rapidly changing situation in Eastern Europe. 1 indeed agree that Many possibly All of the changes taking place in Eastern Europe will in the Long run make our world a better place. What concerns me though is the premise that a because things that Are happening Are Good things that happened Are in a not saying that the people of the world arc so naive As to believe such a premise. What i am saying is that some people May try to push the idea that a because people Are being a Nice a All of the mistakes of the past Are somehow especially if these ideas Are pushed on the most easily influenced of people a this letter is in response to the Many letters i have read in the stars and stripes concerning such things As a the lettuce in the commissary. A the Hairspray that costs 2 cents More than it does in the states. A the Exchange that a never open late enough. A the Bath towels that Arentt the right color. I am an airman 1st class with less than two years in service. Yet i have supported myself on the turkish Economy quite Well for More than a to future our children it will be dangerous to tailor ones lectures in history classes to the current situation. History is a study of the past. Trying to relate that past to the present May be a Good tool but to slate that history is a obsolete Quot is dangerous. I have read accounts that say a that can to happen. This is 1942.? the people who believed this statement arc still paying today. It is 1990. Look Forward to better Days. Democracy and people Power Are rampant. Look Forward to what is coming but done to try to change what was. If the past becomes obsolete the future becomes hopeless. Teach Hope. A a. Lobb Augsburg West Germany my message is this the . Militai7 is not a welfare Agency. It is supposed to be a fighting Force. Its not enough that some of these people Are completely supported by the military. No they still find things to complain about. The military spends billions of dollars of taxpayers Money every year to keep families together yet the gratitude it gets is almost nonexistent. If you can t be Happy with everything you re Given Over Here then do us All a favor and please go Home.
