European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 15, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11. $ a is dear Ann Landers i was recently faced with the most difficult task of my life. I had to put our dog to sleep. We got this Darling Pooch when he was 4 weeks old. He lived to be 17, so you can imagine what he meant to us. Up until a few weeks ago he was in excellent health. Suddenly he developed an incurable bladder problem and we knew we had to put him out of his misery. My wife is brokenhearted. Nothing i say seems to help. Several years ago you printed a column about a dogs wish to be put to sleep when he no longer enjoyed living. It was very touching Ann. Please try to find it and run it again. In a sure it will help my wife Stop grieving. Thank you. A ., Hawthorne . Dear Here a that tender Little essay. It appeared in my column in 1986. I did no to know who wrote it so it ran a author if anyone knows whose work this is please write to me. I like to give credit where it is due. A dogs plea treat me kindly my beloved Friend for no heart in All the world is More grateful for kindness than the Loving heart of me. Do not break my spirit with a stick for though i might lick your hand Between blows your patience and understanding will More quickly teach me the things you would have me learn. Speak to me often for your voice is the worlds sweetest music As you must know by the fierce wagging of my Tail when the sound of your footstep Falls upon my waiting ear. Please take me inside when it is cold and wet for 1 am a domesticated animal no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the Hearth. Keep my pan filled with fresh water for i cannot Tell you when 1 suffer thirst. Feed me clean food that i May stay Well to Romp and play and do your bidding to walk by your Side and stand ready willing and Able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger. And my Friend when i am very old and i no longer enjoy Good health hearing and sight do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I shall leave this Earth knowing with the last breath i Drew that my Fate was always safest in your hands. A a dogs Friend in Kansas City to. Dear Ann Landers our 24-year-old College graduate son who lives 500 Miles away is coming Home for his cousins wedding. He is bringing his new steady and has told us not asked that they will be sharing the second bedroom in our apartment. My husband and i assume they Are sleeping together but we done to want it happening under our noses. Are we Square Are we unrealistic Are we hypocritical what do you think a Richmond a. Dear Rich its your apartment and you have the right to make the rules. If you done to want your son and his new steady to share a bedroom under your roof that settles it. Gem of the Day credit Henry b. Dobson Wood bum Ore done to be too critical of a mistake. It is evidence that at least somebody tried to do something. Creators Syndicate volunteering not just for officers wives i read with interest a recent letter regarding the activities of officers wives. This was a reply to an article you published regarding the activities of one army captains wife As a disc jockey and attendee of own functions the writer of the letter mentions that Many officers wives Are teachers lawyers doctors nurses Etc. I am enlisted air Force and my wife is a professional too. My wife is a registered nurse a pianist organist and a fantastic Interior decorator by the Way she is not employed Here in England because of a complicated registration system whereby she would receive Only one third the pay she Woula receive by working in the states. Please allow me to ask just one question of your readers is it possible for an enlisted member in the . Forces to marry someone so talented by the Way because she is the wife of an no my wife is treated by some officers wives As though she has some kind of disease. What a the matter with people a name withheld Raf Greenham common England there was a letter from Camp Darby Italy questioning the role of an officers wife. Volunteer work in particular was questioned. The writer Felt that the officers wives who do get paid for professional work should be applauded As Well. I think that women a work in general is not valued enough in our society. Whereas 97 percent of All the worlds unpaid labor is done by women 90 percent of the Earth a wealth is owned by men. Even so i have to disagree with this woman a response. I live in England. I am not an officers wife but a lowly a senior airman turned Buck sergeant so wife. I have no rank really and for the most part most everyone thinks i am not terribly intelligent. Resenting this patronizing attitude i usually set out to gain As much education As possible As soon As i arrive in a new place. I Stop at the education office right after billeting and the housing office but before the dining facility. Unfortunately we live in base housing that is about 25 Miles from the main base making attending University on base difficult at Best. But England has afforded me an education that i could never have gotten anywhere else. In England everyone does Volunteer work and donates to Charity. The feeling is no matter How bad off you think you Are there is always someone who is worse. I went to a school play recently. At the end they asked for donations to help the school. As much As they could have used All that was raised half went to Charity. I actually live in a Village that has married quarters for a British military installation. Their wives do Volunteer work All the time. In fact their family support Center is completely run by volunteers from the chairman of the committee to the manager to the lady who serves you Tea when you walk m the door. The Center is virtually self sufficient they sell Tea and Coffee to fund their activities. I have seen people go Quot on Holiday and come Back with a Mug or a Tea Towel for the place. This is Devotion to a cause. These women arc not lonely Little housewives with nothing better to do. One woman has four children the youngest is 2, the oldest 6. She holds Down a part time Job at night and docs Volunteer work for two different organizations at their base. I could not help but feel like a fifth wheel in the Mist of this flurry of activity. Needless to say i got involved. My involvement entered around reaching the american wives stationed Here with me. The British Center had free classes for their wives and offered them to us. The problem was most americans do not hear about them. So i try to Welcome in new americans Orient them into the neighbourhood and make life a Little easier. I do not want applause or accolades i like doing this. I have worked hours that would drive some people crazy but i could not possibly be paid for it because it is a labor of love. And that is what Volunteer work is All about. I have been honoured for my work. But there Are people who arc never noticed. There Are people who try hard for years to reach people never getting paid a Penny for what they do. And yet you could not hire someone to put so much heart soul patience and Plain caring into a Job. They Are not in it for the glory. It is not to help their husbands get a that next they Are in it for the rewards that they feel inside. In the face of our family support and family services units being desperate for More volunteers to Sec a negative letter about Volunteer work As being a free Labory concerns me. Why is a free Labory a dirty word budget cuts arc restricting our resources to the Point we will have to depend More and More on Quot free every single one of us is needed in this world. And yes you can make a difference in this crazy world. Yes even free labor counts. If i could get two hours a week from every depressed a Elm bored of being stuck in this House wife in my area alone. I would have More hands than work. Yes it docs count. Volunteer work counts on a resume if that concerns you. So if you manage to get into a great training scheme doing Volunteer work and our base has tons of them it does count when you go Back. You cannot say what your last salary was but you can say with ease a what i did was too Good to put a Price on it a because it is absolutely True. I feel there is a message Here that is so important. I feel that if we could modify a change is asking for too much a our feelings about a free work then maybe at the next base i will not see in the base Magazine a please Volunteer or we May have to temporarily close this facility because we have no a Monica Parks Raf Alconbury England pen pals i am 21 years old and like business and Reading.
