European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 2, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11anrilwm? letters dear Ann Landers what affliction is More common than cancer cerebral palsy tuberculosis multiple sclerosis muscular dystrophy and aids combined what affliction did Hammurabi a code mention and Hippocrates insist began in the brain and was not caused by supernatural forces what affliction was shared by Mohammed Julius Caesar Dostoevski and Many other famous and accomplished people. Epilepsy is the hidden disability that society will not accept. The vast majority of epileptics myself included Are partly to blame for this unfortunate situation. When these people hide their disorder they accept society a ignorant and fearful proclamation that epileptics Are freaks and cannot live Normal lives. I can to sign my name to this letter for fear that i will not get another Job. I was fired from a College position after a seizure and was told that i should not be working with the Public because i might frighten someone. The reaction of Many people to even a mild seizure is fear and revulsion. Epilepsy can affect anyone from a Genius to an idiot and is in no Way a sign of mental retardation or emotional illness. In most cases it can be controlled by medication. Epileptic seizures or convulsions occur when the electrical signals of one group of brain cells overwhelm neighbouring parts of the brain. The symptoms vary and include a Brief cessation of activity and a Blank stare uncontrollable twitching that spreads from the fingers to one Side of the body uncharacteristic and sometimes bizarre behaviour a fall As the body stiffens and then sleep. If you Are with someone who has a seizure guide that person to a Safe place. Remain Calm. Remember this is not the movies. He or she is not a going crazy and will not harm anyone. After the seizure has passed Tell the person what had happened. In most cases the epileptic will not be aware that anything occurred. Make no references to the seizure on future occasions. Continue to treat that person As you have in the past. A no name no place dear no name thank you for an Opportunity to Shine a very big spotlight on a problem that has been grossly misunderstood for too Long. You have written a letter that will help millions of people think about epilepsy in a completely different Way. Dear Ann Landers this letter is about thank you cards for wedding gifts. Three years ago a a John and i received Many Beautiful presents. I did my Best to Send thank you letters promptly but i have been unable to express appreciation for two gifts. One was a wonderful picnic thermos Jug with Matching cups. There was no card. The second had a card but the handwriting was illegible and the Ink was smeared. That gift was an elegant Silver picture Frame. In yet another instance one of my friends signed Only her first name. It took me several Days to determine which a a Beth had sent the gift. Ann couples Are often criticized in your column for not sending thank you letters. Please Tell your readers to remember to include a card securely attached or inside the Box and signed legibly with their full names. A Blanche Jamaica Plain mass. Dear Blanche legible handwriting and last names Are a help. Another thought most gifts come from stores and shops whose names Are on the Box or wrapping. A Telephone Call will often unravel the mystery. Exposing child to smoke angers writer the purpose of this letter is to voice continued concern about secondary tobacco smoke Ever present in Public places. The current increasing Public awareness and educational programs our military prevention Medicine activities and the National Public health department have made is Worth applauding but i feel that More stringent rules need to be made and enforced. While shopping at our local Exchange we decided to eat at our cafes Burger bar. The facility was unusually Busy. Due to this the a no smoking area was full and we were forced to sit in the designated smoking area. While waiting for our order i observed these puffing patrons their behaviour and characteristics. I do not understand Why these people deliberately and continually risk their health and continue this habit. And i could not understand Why they could not refrain from such a habit for a period of 30 or 40 minutes while they ate. Then i asked myself a who is protecting the rights of the children a there were infants in carriers and strollers toddlers pre teens and teen agers All subjected to their parents habits and tobacco smoke. It is my opinion that no one has considered or is concerned with the rights of these children. They have no other Choice than to be put into this unhealthy environment if mom and dad decide to sit in the designated smoking area. As an individual who has spent Over 20 years in Industrial Hygiene safety and occupational health i find this appalling we have taken great strides to educate the youth of our nation discussing the dangers tobacco smoke can bring. Our preventive Medicine activities Community health nurses occupational health professionals environmentalists and civilian Public health professionals cannot fulfil their Mission and goals without additional support and regulations. We must tear Down double standards like the following due to Well documented health Hazard reports on the use of tobacco it is illegal for children to Purchase tobacco products. To see them forced to inhale secondary tobacco smoke in Public places is at Best detestable at worst hypocritical although the Ideal situation of Banning All smoking in Public places May not at this time be feasible due to legalities Etc., its time to take another step on behalf of the rights and the health of our nations youth. If parents persist in denial of this Ever present exposure we should not look to them As Public role models. The compassion and obligation to Good health must be enforced in Public places by the concerned health professionals. Simply stated for the Protection of our nations youth infants and children should not be permitted in designated smoking areas a William h.
