Bergers Mclaren Honda took 21 fewer seconds to run 70 laps of the 2.73-mile course and was first across the finish line As the Check ered Flag waved. But because Berger was also the first to Start a earning a 60-Sccond penalty for jumping the Green Light a he spent sunday afternoon fruitlessly chasing his teammate on the score Sheet. Spared a possible late Lap shootout with his teammate Senna merely kept his car on the pavement in posting an easy Victory. The official margin was 10.497 seconds Over Nelson Piquet a Benetton Ford but Only because Senna slowed after his margin had grown to Over 30 seconds. Briton Nigel Mansell driving a Ferrari was third just ahead of Berger. Ferra rims Alain Prosl was fifth and two laps Down Derek Warwick rounded out the top six scoring positions in a Lotus Lam Borghini. Senna a Victory was his second in Row and third in five races this year and the 23rd of his career. He averaged 111.946 Mph in building his Lead in the Point standings to 31 -19 Over his teammate Berger. At the Start Senna formula ones career Leader with 46 poles was parked in his usual no. 1 Grid position. Unlike the flying starts of american racing formula one races begin with the cars parked in 13 staggered rows of two. Up front Senna was parked about a car length ahead of Berger. Berger Only slightly slower than Senna in qualifying May have been thinking that he might beat his teammate to the first turn on a Slippery wet track. Just before the Green Light glowed to Start the race Berger let out his clutch and his car moved Forward. He was almost even with Senna when the Light actually came on. Quot i did not gain any advantage from my overeager Start but i anticipated a Green Light a Berger said. Senna intent on what was immediately ahead of him did no to notice his teammates car. A i could not know a the 1988 formula one Champion said although he a Felt something maybe it was a although the track was wet when racing began the action of 26 cars flashing along at Well Over 100 Mph quickly dried the pavement particularly the preferred racing line. Spots off the racing line As a few Drivers Learned. Senna described the search for the Safe yet fast line As a a a i never had a car with such a confused set up a he said explaining that his Crew had anticipated wet conditions and thus sought maximum grip instead of All out Speed. Senna made it look easy As he Ted All but three laps giving up the advantage then Only because he ducked into the pits for a tire change. A it was a very Tough race for me because the track surface was wet and dirty off line and my first gear broke a Senna said. A i was worried that pieces of that gear would break the other gears. In first gear turns i simply got by on Piquet a second place underlined his return to prominence after some recent problems. The three time formula one Champion Hasni to finished in the top three in a race since winning his last title in 1987. His second place in Canada increased his Point total for the five race season to 12, the same total he had through 16 races a year ago. With Senna sailing along alone in front the Best race was for second with Piguet hounding Prost and in turn being shadowed by Mansell. A it was a Ferrari Sandwich and i was the Ham a Piquet laughed. For 20 laps near mid race the three veterans threaded nose to Tail through traffic. A at the beginning of the race the setup of the car was not perfect a Piquet said. A i did no to feel very comfortable. A but then the circuit started drying out and i picked up Speed. I could see i was quicker than Prost and was Able to overtake him on Lap 49.? at least three off course excursions could be blamed on Drivers getting out of the dry line. Thierry Yousten Winner of this race last year was trying to get past Prost on the 19th Lap when his Renault Williams hit a wet spot. A i saw an Opportunity to overtake him but unfortunately there was a lot of water on the left hand Side and i put my left rear tire into a Little bit of water a Boutsen said. A and then i lost control of my Alessandro Nannini who inherited the Lead briefly when Senna pitted on Lap 12, lost his Benetton Ford when he spun backwards into a tire Barrier on Lap 21. Five laps later French phenom Jean Alesi lost his Tyrrell Ford in the same place with the same move eventually coming to rest against Nannini a disabled car. In other incidents Pierluigi martinis Minardi Ford went off course in the first Lap and Emanuelle Pirrot a Dallara Ford tangled with Michele Al Boretos a arrows Ford on Lap 11. The defending Winston cup Champion finally making a charge toward the top of the Driver standings beat Mark Martin and Ricky Rudd in sundays banquet Frozen foods 300-Kilometcr race earning his fifth Victory in the last seven Lascar Winston cup Stock car Road races. A i done to personally think much of me As a Road racer a Wallace said with a bemused smile. A a there a nothing smooth about me on a Road course. Most people say you have to be smooth to do Well on a Road course but if 1 run smooth in a just Wallace who moved past Dale Earnhardt into third place in the Winston cup standings with his second Victory of the season a both coming in the last three starts a gained a measure of revenge when he passed Rudd to take the Lead with 15 laps remaining. A year ago in the inaugural Winston cup event on the 2.52-mile, 12-Tum Sears Point International raceway course Rudd bumped Wallace aside in the final turn on the Way to a 0.05-second Victory. This time Wallace gave Rudd just a Little nudge in the rear bumper before slipping underneath and driving his Pontiac grand prix into the Lead. That pass came on Lap 60 of the 74-Lap, 187-mile event. A caution Flag on Lap 62 a the eighth of nine in a race in which the Winner averaged Only Only 69.245 Mph a kept Rudd s Chevrolet Lumina right on Wallace a rear bumper. But Wallace pulled away after the Green Flag waved and Mark Martin then slipped past Rudd on Lap 72 to finish second. A we won at Charlotte May 28led the most laps at Dover june 3 and led the most laps and won Here. I think we re on a Roll a said Wallace who struggled through the first eight races of the season. The race finished under the ninth caution Flag brought out after Terry Labonte and Davey Allison bumped in the hairpin turn and Labonte stalled with one Lap left. Wallace collected $69,100 for the 18th Victory of his career. Geoff Bodine was fourth followed by Bobby Hillin jr., Sterling Marlin and Ernie Irvan. Martin who trailed Morgan Shepherd by 32 Points in the Winston cup standings coming into the race moved into the season Lead by 62 Points Over Shepherd. Shepherd who had finished in the top 10 in each of the 11 previous races this season was running fifth when his engine broke with just four laps remaining. That dropped him to an eventual 29th-place finish. Rudd started from the pole and led the first 11 laps with Irvan and Earnhardt close behind. There was plenty of bumping and banging on the tight circuit and Rudds Bodywork was pushed in enough to Cut Down a tire on the 12th Lap forcing him to slow and then pit giving the Lead to Irvan. Earnhardt also with body damage and a tire prod pm pitted at the same time. He fell to 31st and Kuna to 40th by the time they emerged from pit Road. With the help of several caution periods those two sliced through the Field with Earnhardt getting to sixth before making a Long Stop on Lap 37 to repair a broken transmission. Rudd moved up to sixth at that pm in. Another tire problem on Lap 45 dropped Rudd Back from second a behind Wallace a to 20th, but another caution period allowed him to move Back into Contention and he charged into the Lead on Lap 58. Wallace was third just behind Hillin at that Point. But he moved to second on Lap 59 and immediately challenged Rudd. There were several crashes and off course Sions but none of the incidents was serious and no injures were reported
