European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 23, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11 letters a radio operators can Ham it up in space fran Landers dear Ann Landers the problem of a Cynthia in Atlanta a who wanted to marry her Boyfriend of two years but maintain separate Homes because both of them were loners interested me. My Boyfriend and i Are also loners and when discussing the matter of living together we realized that being a couple does no to mean you must spend every minute in each others presence. I come from a highly intrusive family. There was no privacy no respect for Solitude and no boundaries of any kind when i was growing up. When i got my own apartment and Learned to relish the quiet and privacy i imagine giving it up to live with a Man. There Are important skills developed in any form of communal living from sharing an apartment to sharing a planet. This territory is mine that territory is yours the other is ours. I respect your need for privacy and i expect you to respect mine. My suggestion to Cynthia would be to explore perhaps with a professional Counselor ways to share a life while respecting your partners need to be alone. Establish rules that include specific guidelines stating when you can and when you cannot be interrupted. Make Clear what you consider private such As desks diaries or closets and the division of labor in shared areas. If possible get a new apartment neither yours nor his but make certain that it is Large enough to have private rooms for hobbies Solitude and a feeling of your own space. If All this is done before you move in together the chances for a successful relationship Are infinitely better. A new Britain Conn. Dear new Brit thanks for the blueprint. It makes a lot of sense for those who have decided to marry or live together without marriage even though i never did think living together was a Good idea a and i still done to. Dear Ann Landers please print this As a personal plea to All your readers who might drink and drive. Dear Friend in a 29 years old. When i was 4, my Grandfather was killed in a car Accident on new years eve. He was struck by a drunk Driver. My Only memory of him is his funeral. When i was 10 years old my brother was killed while coming Home after serving in Vietnam. He was within a few Miles of Home when the car he was Riding in swerved to avoid a car driven by a drunk Driver. Yesterday we buried my father who was killed in a head on collision while going to work. The Driver was also drunk. Dad was 57. He had never touched alcohol. He and mom were married 39 years and had five children and 15 grandchildren. My children will never know their wonderful Grandfather because they were too Young when he died. This is a tremendous loss. Please dear readers of Ann Landers column if you drink in a begging you to think about my family before you get behind the wheel of your car. Haven to we been through enough a Wapakoneta Ohio dear Ohio i Hope your letter makes a solid Impact on those who need to be reminded that alcohol and driving can be a deadly combination. Thanks for saying it so Well. My Heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Gem of the Day if you want to teach your children the value of a Dollar you had better hurry up. Do the news reports you hear on the space program and the shuttle launches leave you hungry for More would you like to be Able to listen in on real conversations even a live broadcast of actual conversations Between the shuttle and ground control would be fun to listen to it if your answer is yes you May be in Luck it is possible not Only to hear these astronauts it is possible for some of our local people to talk to the astronaut directly while on the Mission. Live broadcasts of most shuttle missions Are broadcast on shortwave frequencies from the states. These signals May be received Here with the right equipment. The transmissions Are not made for the general population. If they were for that purpose they would be prohibited by Law. Still anyone can easily tune them in with any Short wave receiver capable of single Side band operations. When the shuttles Are in orbit the operational communications Between Mission control and the shuttle Are rebroadcast by Amateur radio operators from special stations. Goddard space flight Center Greenbelt md., broadcasts from Amateur radio station wa3nan on 7.185 Megahertz lab lower Side band and 14.295, 21.395, and 28.650 Mhz us upper Side band. Johnson space Center Clear Lake City Texas has Amateur station w5rrr. It broadcasts on 7.227 Mhz lab14.280, 21.350, 28.650 Mhz us. Jet propulsion labs Pasadena Calif also transmits these broadcasts on 21.280 Mhz us. There Are other frequencies but they will not cover this part of the world. Which frequency and station heard depends on several factors. The first variable is the time of Day Early morning a until Sunrise a the 7 Mhz frequencies Are Best if they Are not covered up by european broadcast stations that share the frequency band. After Sunrise and through most of the morning the 14 and 21 Mhz frequencies act better As they will again immediately after Sunset and through most of the night. Mid afternoon it May be possible to tune in at 28 Mhz. The second most important variable is sunspots. This affects the distance a frequency will travel before it bounces off the ionosphere and returns to Earth. It i have been a tour guide for 12 years and i would like to address the letter a Reader remarks on first of All i am surprised that the stars and stripes prints assumptions regarding matters that Are degrading to an entire Branch of an Industry. Luckily the a name withheld writer used the word a probably a indicating that he she is just shooting from the nip but does no to know what he she is talking about. If a shop should give a discount to a tour Leader when he is making his own Purchase that hurts no one and definitely does not mean one gets ?o30-40 percent from the total amount boy would i also has an effect on the atmospheric noise level that May cover up even very Strong signals at times. Another Factor is weather conditions. It is unlikely that you can receive any of these signals without an outside Antenna. Yet a simple wire Antenna in a Clear area should be enough to get some interesting results. You can make radio Contact with shuttle astronauts directly during a Mission. An astronaut who is a Ham radio operator is authorized to use a recreational time to operate from space on every second or third shuttle Mission. These missions Are called a tsar exp or shuttle Amateur radio experiments. When sts-35 goes up this time it is taking or. Ron Parise a wa4sir. He will be operating voice and a a packet a that is a digital Mode. If you Nave a scanner you May hear him on 145.55 Mhz pm. It is also a local chit Chat frequency for Ham operators so you May hear a lot of things that Are not from space. When the shuttle is Active almost everyone will listen to or. Parise hams wishing to talk to him will not do it on that frequency because he will not be listening there. He will be on one of five other frequencies listening and transmitting on 145.55 for us to hear him. When hams make Contact or Are even just heard by the shuttle they May receive a a a isl card confirming the Contact. A special Effort is made to Contact school club stations to encourage Young people to get involved in the space program. There is a shortage of Good engineers and technicians for the space Industry. Many of those currently working in the Industry Are very rapidly reaching retirement age. Ham radio is just one Way in which Young people Are being encouraged to enter the a final for More information you May Contact your local Amateur radio club. In communities of the 1st army div Contact me. I will see to it that you Are put in Contact with a local Active Ham in your area. A staff sgt.
