European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 19, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Dear Ann Landers its too late to help our son Tony. He committed suicide a few months ago he was 28. But maybe you can help others by panting this letter. Tony was a remarkable Young Man president of his senior class a nationally ranked wrestler in High school and College and Well on his Way to becoming a Success Ful businessman. Although we Arentt certain. When it began Tony changed. He told his wife he could read Peoples minds and that he was receiving messages from god. His hallucinations became in Creasm Gly bizarre and then one Day he insisted on flying to Washington ., to a help the government officials with their he believed he was John f. Kennedy and referred to his wife As Tony was in and out of psychiatric facilities several times. He could not be Hel Ltd however because our state Law says a person cannot ire kept against his will unless he presents a danger to himself or others. He considered himself to be perfectly Normal and was sure his a a enemies were trying to do him in. Many Sci zen phrenic refuse to believe that they Are ill and resist treatment and medication. We became convinced from what we had read in medical literature that Tony was suffering from schizophrenia. But the doctors who saw him seemed reluctant to make that diagnosis. They assured us that he was not a danger to himself or to anyone else. Time proved they were wrong. Schizophrenia is a much misunderstood disease. It is perceived by Many to be an emotional illness when it is in fact a disease of the brain in the same Way that Parkinson a alzheimer a and multiple sclerosis Are brain diseases. Schizophrenia generally strikes teen agers and Young adults. The causes Are still unknown but the symptoms can often be treated with anti psychotic drugs. T we Learned at Tony a funeral that he had been taking anabolic steroids for several years. Only recently have psychiatrists identified a definite link Between the use of steroids and psychiatric problems. Or. Harrison Pope of Mclean Hospital Belmont mass., encountered two cases at the Center where psychotic symptoms resulted from the use of anabolic steroids. As a result of these cases or. Pope undertook a study of 41 athletes who had taken steroids. While most of the 41 experienced Only slight or no Side effects five met criteria for psychotic symptoms and four others had what or. Pope described As subthreshold episodes. In the last six months or. Pope has become aware of at least to o other suicides that appear to be connected with steroid use. One can Only guess How Many others there Are. \ we will probably never know whether Tony a use of steroids was a cause or contributing Factor in his illness. Research studies on both schizophrenia and steroids Are in their infancy and both Are woefully underfunded. Whether or not the use of steroids was a Factor in Tony a death i beg athletes to leave them alone. No athletic achievement is Worth taking the Chance of ending your life in a Field with a Bullet in your head. A Joseph a. Tracey Amarillo Texas dear or. Tracey thank you for having the courage to Tell us your Story. As you have pointed out schizophrenia is a mystifying and devastating illness. Those who want to know More and where to go for help should write to National Alliance for the mentally 111, . Box Nami Al Arlington a. 22216. I can to say enough about this fabulous organization. A amp a amp asks about future . Role in Europe 1 am writing this on a Short break from performing official duties As a military policeman in Hanau West Germany i would write it on my Day off but i Haven to had one in at least 13 Days. My soldiers have been working just As Long and we Are on 12-hour shifts. That amounts to at least 84 hours a week. That a not counting the one hour before shift guard mount or late cases., my soldiers often develop an attitude because of Lack of time with their families or because they did no to accomplish their Quot personal business on their a personal time and were reprimanded for it. During the 30-plus months that in be been Back Over Here in Europe time off Hasni to been getting any better for my soldiers. They still average four Days offer month work Long hours and survive. Its More difficult than it should be to keep them motivated but they Are very Good soldiers. Now i wonder How troop cuts Are going to affect them. Will troop cuts Lessen our commitment in Europe or will we still have the same commitment but with less people my soldiers already regard their Peers As a a Day off a not As co workers or friends a but As a a Day off because they know somebody will lose their time off if another Soldier is relieved of duty or gets injured. So Affer the troop cuts will we be playing football in Europe with just 11 Guys Why done to we review our commitment in Europe see where we can make cutbacks and then see if we can Start sending soldiers Home i know i done to see a lot of the big picture just yet. 1 done to even know if any soldiers have gone Back to the states yet As a result of troop cuts. In a just not Well informed right now but 1 want to be. My soldiers would like to know what the future holds for them As Well. Many of them Are cd Ming up on re enlistment. A staff sgt Anthony a Mcclure Hanau West Germany editors note a col. Paul a mourns commander 18th military police brigade replies the soldiers account of Long working hours in the Hanau Community is accurate. Owing the period March 28 through april 8, units in Hanau experienced severe shortages of qualified military police personnel who were available to perform Law enforcement and Security duties. This shortage coupled with requirements to sup port Field training exercises made it necessary to implement a 12-hour work schedule for 12 Days to meet the Community Law enforcement and Security requirements 1 would like to say How proud i am of this Soldier and All the soldiers who continued to provide outstanding service during this period of extended work hours. You were called to task and As always met the Challenge. As for troop cuts and How they will Impact on military police commitments the answers Are currently unknown. As Long As there Are soldiers and their families in Europe the requirement for Law enforcement and Security personnel will remain As troop reductions begin a number of questions May remain unanswered. Until those questions Are answered. It is important that military police continue to provide the outstanding service they Nave provided in the past i will continue to do All that i can to minimize any extended work hours and take care of soldiers and their families. A Parent objects to shouting by teacher i know this letter is too late for this school year but better late than never. My child was in kindergarten i have witnessed the teacher Yelling at the children numerous times. I believe children can be Given rules from Day one and if the teacher is consistent there will be no need for Yelling. Kindergarten is the first experience a child Wilt have we can Only Hope it will be a Good one. Children need a kindergarten teacher who will be patient and who likes children. A child needs to be praised not constantly put Down and yelled at. I have seen other kindergarten teachers work with their children who have not had to raise their voices. Have you Ever wondered Why you have to perhaps you would be better with older children who can follow instructions after being told Only once what to do. It is not Good to say to a child a a in a tired of your behaviour a or a a in be had enough of i have heard a kindergarten teacher say that a few limes. Maybe there in t enough training for kindergarten teachers. A degree and a training course for All teachers May not be enough. Some children have difficulties sitting Stilt others May not be Able to keep up with the class. A kindergarten teacher wrote a few months ago about 5-year-Olds going to kindergarten. She said kindergarten is the foundation for All future learning hat you either make or break each child with his or her first experience in school. How i wished my child had that teacher. Maybe my child will get Lucky next year and have a wonderful teacher. A name and location withheld a Why should taxpayers bail out a amp is i _. ,. _. There is no Way the american taxpayer should be responsible for the savings and loan bailout of $ 100 to $500 billion. Restitution must be made by those who created the mess a those in the Industry and those in the government agencies that regulate and insure that Industry. These Are the people who Are guilty of Gross negligence and mismanagement possibly graft and corruption. The current administration was just a Little too Quick to dump the Load on the taxpayer As the solution to the problem. That seems to be Loo easy of a Way out. Something stinks therefore it would be ludicrous to let the administrations Resolution Trust corporation investigate and oversee the entire problem solving operation. There should be a congressional investigation utilizing the Best available people in All Fields related to the a amp a Industry and White Collar criminal investigation. _ the people responsible for this crime should pay for it not the taxpayer. Once those individuals Are identified their assets can be Frozen and held pending judicial procedures. If found guilty jail terms and High fines should be in order. That Way at least some of the Money will be retrieved. Let those responsible be accountable. A John h. Swift Frankfurt West German the european edition col. Gene e.
