European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 2, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse It lahders4 tuesday october 2,1990 the stars and stripes dear Ann Landers if you throw this letter in the trash i blame you. It sounds like a soap opera but its gods truth. I need your help. My parents came to this country from Italy Many years ago. My father was a cabinetmaker and my i Mother was a seamstress. She. Taught me to sew. After graduate it it ing from High school i joined her a full time working out of our 1 Home. Life was wonderful until my parents were killed in a car Accident. I was 23 years old an Only child completely on my own. My parents owed no debts owned our Home and had a Little Money in the Bank. I hired a Helper and took Over my mothers business. I Wasny to dating anyone until i met a handsome Young physician. We fell in love a at least i did. When i became pregnant we planned to marry. His society parents particularly his Mother whom i had never met called me and said a a mafia seamstress was not going to ruin her Only child a Brilliant career. I waited for him to phone me and say his Mother had made the Call on her own and not to pay any attention to her. That Call never came. I had my baby alone got Back to work As soon As i could and put the fancy doctor out of my mind. When a a Jimmy was 4 years old i made a bold move. I took him to see his grandparents. When they saw this Beautiful Bright child they were overwhelmed. Many tears were shed including mine. I was no longer a a mafia i was the Mother of their grandson their most treasured gift. A few Days later Jimmy met his father. He broke Down and cried babbled like an idiot and begged me to forgive him for abandoning me. I have been offered marriage Security and a family. This is what i want More than anything in the world especially for Jimmy in Case something should happen to me. But i have a lot of resentment about the Way i was treated. I never loved anyone but Jimmy a father but i cannot forget How he and his family turned their backs on me when i needed them most. What do i do now Ann Pittsburgh dear Pittsburgh now you Lead with your head instead of your heart for a change. See a lawyer about support for Jimmy including compensation for his care during the last four years. Next you agree to become reacquainted with the fancy doctor but this does no to mean picking up where you left off. Treat him like a new Friend and let him earn the right to be close to you again. Done to make any big decisions for at least six months. Then write again and let me know How things Are going. Dear Ann Landers it is costing the . Government millions of dollars to mint new pennies while billions of pennies Are sitting in cookie jars milk bottles and baby Banks. The Banks wont Cash them in if they Arentt wrapped. So Why does no to the government make a Deal with the Banks to accept the unwrapped pennies and weigh them instead a Bank Chart would show How much a certain weight is Worth Penny for Penny. The government would pay the Banks for wrapping and the pennies could go Back into circulation. This would really be a pennies from heaven for Golden agers who have saved pennies for so Many years. A a . From Cleveland . I checked with three Chicago Banks and Learned that they will take pennies wrapped or unwrapped. Cleveland Banks however wont accept unwrapped pennies. They done to have counting machines. So bring Mem to Chicago folks. C creators Syndicate Page 11 letters a toward a leaner Federal workforce there is a dynamic today that is evolving so quickly it is difficult to comprehend the signals it has produced. Change is the dynamic. In More tangible form it has served to alter our economic Security and May do so for some time to come. The Domestic employment situation illustrates that our Economy and the world Economy Are almost one and the same. If this truly is happening then largely we Are right in looking at our own sense of Security with a great Deal of fear a fear that seems to Stop us m our tracks like a Deer in front of a set of headlights. To illustrate take a close look at How Federal employees Are being requested to take an involuntary furlough to avoid being Laid off. Also examine the recent increase at 3.5 percent at a time when the inflation is at 5 percent. Federal employees have traditionally had Good reason to feel that their jobs were Safe nobody was going to ask them to leave. Remember the old joke a if you want to fire a Federal employee you need an act of yet if you ask a sampling of is employees whether they feel that they Are growing As professionals you Are not Likely to hear them say yes. Perhaps the government and Federal employees must accept the fact that they too will be subject to the same budget and Cost saving criteria experienced by their civilian counterparts. The fact is non government employees Are much More Likely to be unprotected by cuts. This is due to the nature of the work environment. When the company is not producing results staff sizes Are reduced. The overwhelming size of the Federal payroll dwarfs even general motors. When pm has to adjust to world economic conditions they have adapted retrained and become More competitive. More painfully they have become More technologically aware and they have reduced payroll. Why Are Federal employees so shocked when they Are threatened with being subject to the same economic realities when we consider budget priorities and who gets protected when the a Falls we should do so fairly with an Eye on rewarding incentive and identifiable productivity rather than protecting mediocrity. The budget deficit will be aided greatly when we have the guts to recognize the Federal payroll for its contributory inefficiency. Unemployment averages for civilian workers keep rising while Federal workers continue to receive protective treatment. Is this because Federal employees arc More qualified than civilian employees hardly. World conditions affect All workers Domestic and foreign. But if every american Job was immune to budget cuts such As soviet jobs in the recent past we would probably have an Economy much like the soviet Union. Come to think of it looking at the blight of the inner cities we May be closer to that condition than we think. A Patrick Mallon Augsburg West Germany a seeing ourselves in league with others this letter is in response to a challenging me first minority i am angered when i hear statements like this person made. First of All everyone starts at the Bottom of the totem pole not just minorities. We can and do make our goals a reality by ourselves. Why should we expect everyone to do this for us none of us forget where we came from. Most of us done to make it an Issue. And As for our parents suffering everyone a parents did and still do. Lets remember Abe Lincoln Benjamin Lundy Elijah Lovejoy Etc. The list is endless. Germany should have taught this person an experience but he she Learned the wrong one. People in Germany died for who they were. Our Brothers and Sisters Are everyone regardless of race. Unity is the key but not for people who address themselves As a minority. The word minority causes people to segregate themselves. Lets join together and become one. A Delores Norton Erlanger West Germany a . Middle East priorities questioned the recent picture of the female army medic in her combat helmet kissing her infant daughter goodbye makes one of the Saddest statements i can imagine about american society. There is something sadly wrong with a society that will order a Mother to leave her 7-week-old infant for a military deployment. Is Equality of the sexes really Worth separating a Mother and her baby will the outcome of the current crisis in the Middle East be tipped in our favor by sending this one woman into the area i sincerely doubt it. I think we need to take a look at our priorities. Is the Price of Oil really Worth More than the integrity of the american family a master sgt. William c.
