European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 29, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday october 29, 1990 the stars and stripes a Page 11 letters a allegations against challenged As the Eisenhower Centennial year Drew to its close on oct. 14 a the 100th anniversary of his birth a there was one final task i Felt obligated to perform As chairman of the Eisenhower Institute the living memorial dedicated to him. It concerns the stars and stripes article of May 24 reporting allegations pertaining to Gen. Dwight d. Eisenhower and to a was Many As a million German pow deaths asserted to have occurred in Western Europe at the close of world War ii. These articles which recently came to my attention failed to make it sufficiently Clear that the Book from which the allegations were drawn has been found by responsible historians at the army Scenter of military history As Well As others to be fundamentally flawed and utterly false in what it purports to report in this regard. The term a other losses in the military records that Are cited in the Book covered principally the Transfer a on paper a of personnel including the military prisoners in this Case from the records of a a losing commands to those of a a gaining commands and not a repeat not a prisoner of War deaths As the author claims. In All the actual deaths of German pos in american hands in Europe according to the Center of military history a Best determination numbered approximately 16,000 out of a total of some 5 million held at the close of the War a i.e., approximately three tenths of 1 percent. Likewise the charge in the Book that Gen. Eisenhower ordered the starvation deaths As a deliberate act of revenge has been found to be utterly unsupported by the evidence. In the interest of trying to rectify these grossly erroneous charges against Gen. Eisenhower his victorious forces and the . Army it is important i believe to set this record straight and Correct any false impressions that May have been left in the minds of our military personnel serving in Europe. A Gen. Ret Andrew j. Goodpaster chairman Eisenhower Institute Washington . A Reader discusses role of duty in War your reporter Joseph Owen has done your readers an important service by reporting some shocking views As to Field marshal Rommel a the Field marshals son says that German troops in Africa a did their duty nothing in excess of that a and claims that his father a executed his Battles Only As a the defense most often asserted at the Nurnberg tribunals was that the accused War criminal was merely a doing his the world took a different viewpoint when ones country says that a a duty includes furthering persecution and genocide one is bound by a higher moral duty. The same moral Standard must apply to Rommel a actions. He served As a High ranking commander in an army explicitly dedicated to murdering millions of the worlds people and enslaving the rest. Perhaps it is True As we Are told that Rommel personally a bore no hatred for the americans British or but let us keep in mind what would have happened if the nazi War machine he so valiantly led had enjoyed even greater Success millions of american British and French civilians would have been exterminated for the offence of being jews Blacks or other this Fate was Laid out in a mein kampf a available to Rommel or any of his troops years before their Call up to Africa. The Field marshals son refers to americans regard for Confederate Gen. Robert e. Lee. I would suggest that its All a question of perspective. Few american Blacks for example hold in High esteem the military commander who fought to keep their entire people enslaved. Anxiety about German unification is not eased by such frightening examples of failing to come to terms with this country a criminal past. They spit everywhere. The Pitcher spits on the Mound the Catcher raises his mask to spit and the base coaches spit. Lord alone knows what the floor of the dugout must look like. Id hate to have to walk around in there Barefoot. I applaud those professional baseball players who stopped chewing tobacco because it was a bad influence on children but there is still a lot of spitting going on. Little leagues spit because they think it makes them look like professionals. If its against the Law to spit on the sidewalk Why is it of to spit on to in front of millions of people our children look up to these men. Baseball players Are considered heroes. Can to they set a better example gagging in Glendale dear gagging when i done to know much about a subject a such As Why baseball players spit a i turn to an expert. Who better to answer this question than Don Zimmer the manager of the Chicago cubs Here a what he has to say a this is in response to your correspondent who wrote about excessive spitting by baseball players. A i agree its a Nasty habit and i would not advocate that any youngster take up chewing tobacco or snuff. But chewing does cause excessive saliva. You cannot Swallow tobacco juice and Here a where spitting comes into the picture. A players and coaches in the dugout often eat Sunflower seeds and they spit out the shells which May look like they Are just spitting. Also i can Tell you that a great Many More players Chew gum than tobacco so some of those Guys spit from habit rather than necessity. I should also Tell you that the majority of players who Are seen spitting on to have no that the camera is on them. Thanks for giving me a Chance to bring the facts to the dear Ann Landers a while Back you commented on parents who wait until later in life to Start a family. You said those a late in life children often miss out on a great Deal such As knowing their grandparents not having mom or dad at their High school graduation wedding Etc. I am an Only child born when my Mother was 46 and my father was 54. My father died when i was in my Early teens and for Many years i have been the sole care giver for my Mother who is 99. There Are no Brothers or Sisters to help me. In a sorry to say that due to the big difference in Ages Mother and i were never close Only politely Friendly. A couples today who Are putting off having children should think ahead. Will they feel up to handling teens and helping children through College when they Are in their 50s and 60s? will they live Long enough to share their children a lives these questions deserve consideration. Dear California a a sad in Calif. Your letter is extremely timely with so Many couples waiting until the House car and boat Are paid for before starting a family. Your Points Merit serious attention.
