European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 30, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Ann Landers dear Ann Landers thank you for your open letter to battered women in a recent col limn. It addressed Many of the myths that help perpetuate this worsening social problem which is epidemic. As a syndicated columnist you Are in a position to do a great Deal of Good. Battering is not an occasional beating. It is a system of control a Ling a woman through terror confusion disabling and every imaginable brainwashing technique. Many battered women Are prohibited from leaving their Homes forbidden to use birth control prohibited from speaking to their friends and forbidden to work. They have no Access to Money. Many women who started out Strong and self reliant have been battered into feeling weak powerless and totally dependent. Battered women often Are deprived of sleep and become confused by unpredictable responses and crazy behaviour. Living in a constant state of terror is so debilitating that they Lack the Energy to think straight. You said Ann a you were probably abused when you were Young so his cruelty seems statistically a woman in a battering relationship is As Likely As not 50 percent to come from a family where there was abuse. There Are admittedly some women who repeat self destructive or co dependent patterns. A batterer like a mugger will deliberately choose a woman who seems least Able to defend herself. Abused women done to go looking for thugs. Batterers can be extremely charming and downright charismatic. Hooray for you Ann for educating the Public and especially the victims. I Hope you can publish this letter and if you do please done to use my real name. I done to want my batterer to find me. My punishment for choosing the wrong Man is that i am on the Lam for the rest of my life. Feeling better in san Francisco dear feeling better you be written a letter that will open some eyes out there and i thank you for it. Dear Ann Landers your column in the Troy Ohio daily news hit me hard. It was from a Man whose wife used to say a please come Home for years he paid no attention. Now his wife has passed away and he was writing to say How much he regretted working so Many evenings and ignoring her pleas to a come Home my husband to whom i was married for 43 years died a few weeks ago while accompanying me on a business trip. He had had a mild heart attack but seemed to be recovering beautifully and planned to go Back to work in a few months. I promised him that after i made a major presentation in grand rapids i would take some time for us. I even promised to Cut Back on my responsibilities As general manager which often meant 12-hour Days. While we were travelling together i casually mentioned How a a chatty he had been with the people who came to visit him while he was recuperating and asked Why he did no to talk very much to me. His reply should have opened my eyes. He said a a you re never again i half kidding by promised to mend my ways and put him first in my life. I really meant to do it but my joking Promise came too late. He died the following week. So you see Ann your column should have been addressed to women As Well As men. Those words ring in my ear a please come Home How i wish i had. J.h., Piqua Ohio . Thanks for reminding us that workaholics have no gender. She has in the last years repeatedly printed letters on controversial subjects such As gun control abortion or animal rights issues. Her answers Are predictable. She is for gun control and abortion she is against animal rights issues. Fine. But these Are not Black and White issues and to be treated fairly would require her printing a letter with a View opposing her own at least once in a while. I can to believe that out of the thousands of letters she receives daily there was not one that brought up Points against positions she holds. On subjects about which she has a set opinion she puts people professing other views in the a Lunatic fringe category. Her support for using animals in medical research is undifferentiated a an animals life is Worth less than a period. No mention Ever of stricter government control required to prevent duplication of research experiments hardly of any value to people pushing for alternative research methods. No faults in the system Are never brought up. Moreover people who express such views must be morons. You be printed letters before from people objecting to political views expressed in comics. Well i done to take comics that seriously but i consider Ann Landers attitude an abuse of Power. She receives letters starting out a you Settle our conflict a a what you say goes a a your word is she is using that influence which should be concentrated on personal problems to Branch out to other subjects presenting them in a very slanted Way and ridiculing people holding an opposing View. Please done to Tell me to just ignore her column. That does no to solve the problem and anyway i like to get my 25 cents Worth. A Heide Bents Sembach a Germany editors note a a Ann Landers replies after blowing through a great Deal of angry verbiage i arrived at the Basic complaint of the woman who wants my column thrown out of the stars and stripes. She feels that i should stick to Peoples problems and not a get into she goes on to say that i do not let the readers express views that Are contrary to mine. Getting into issues is what my column is ail about. In a proud to say that i have come a Long Way from the lovelorn format. And i have no plans to return. As for my not allowing readers who disagree with me to voice their opposition anyone who follows my column knows that on Many occasions i have accepted the wet Noodle and pointed out where i was wrong and the Reader was right. In conclusion if i were As biased and one dimensional As this Reader says How did i manage to survive for 35 years a Vietnam vet praises gis serving in Gulf my name is Antonio Florentino Navarro but please Call me i am 39 years old and a 100 percent disabled american Veteran of the United states Marine corps from the Vietnam Era.
