European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - December 8, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday december in 1990 the stars and stripes Page 11 dear Ann Landers in a recent column you mentioned that your office staff likes Happy endings. Here s one i Hope you enjoy. When i met my husband we were both divorced. He had been a heavy drinking alcoholic for 20 years and had tried to quit dozens of times. He had custody of his two teen age children and owned nothing but the clothes on his Back. He was confused pessimistic about the future and bitter because of the past and he had no Money. I had been divorced for six years and held a fairly decent Job but it was one that took me away from my children most of the Day. I had four kids ranging in age from 13 to 19. My House was literally falling apart. I lived from hand to Mouth and wondered if the rest of my life would be like this. All i did was sleep work and eat a sometimes not enough. I had no social life because i Felt i should be Home with my children evenings. All of our six children were from dysfunctional families and showed the symptoms one Way or another. Now 10 years later we Are married and my husband is off alcohol. He has a responsible supervisory position and his two kids Are great. They have steady jobs and Are Well adjusted. One is married and has a family. The other is still single. My four Are doing beautifully. One is married and has a child. We love grand parenthood. Our Home has been remodeler not expensively but in Good taste and it is a Refuge for friends and family because of the love they find Here. Was it easy Heck no. Was it Worth the turmoil tears and uncertainty Heck yes. Had we gone according to the Book we never would have tried to pull it off much less made it. How did we do it with prayers a sense of humor prayers a sense of commitment prayers respect for each other and for our children helping them through their problems prayers knowing when to instruct and when to listen prayers and always standing together. /. A i Hope your staff enjoys our Story Ann. They a and you a do a great Job. Through the Mill in Cleveland dear Cleveland what a splendid example of the can do spirit. 1 Salute you. A letter such As yours lets others know that with Faith and determination All things Are possible. Dear Ann Landers while i was enjoying a Beer in a local tavern the owner told me that his hours were the world s worst. A i Start at 5 00 .,? he said. When i asked him Why he opened up at such an ungodly hour he said a i have to be ready for the Guys who come in after work at the pulled the graveyard shift at that same factory for several years. The idea of stopping off at a tavern for a a drink after work never entered my mind. Furthermore i never heard of any of my co workers doing it either. _ that shift was Tough. We wait to get Home and 7 go to bed. A a a a a a a. A -. A a i say that anyone who has to have booze at 5 30 Is an alcoholic. He says that to the Guys who have worked their eight hours 5 30 Is the same As 6 30 . Is to the Day shift workers. I done to believe it. Do you . From downstate dear . A. \ a. A i do. Swing shifters turn their body clocks around and it s As natural for them to Stop and have a drink at Daw i As for an office worker to have one at dusk. Being an Oid Bluenose i wonder Why any of them have to Stop. At ail. A a a. A a a. A a. C creators Syndicate local nationals dedication praised in my opinion a recent article takes a Long overdue step towards improving the relationship Between the military and local nationals employed Here in Europe. I am sure it will generate a great Deal of response from some citizens who Are More worried about their Short term Comfort rather than realizing the important part local nationals have contributed to the entire european military organization these past 40 years or so. Local nationals have for too Long been on the losing end of things when it comes to Equality and just Plain fairness when it comes to employment rights. The local nationals i Deal with and have dealt with from Deh pm Dol contracting and to a lesser extent co have All been professional competent and dedicated to their jobs and supportive to . Military types. Overall they provide needed to make a system work. They have kept the military establishment on track Over these Many years by providing a continuity to the highly transient nature of the european Community and the interface Between the English speaking folks and in Germany at least the German speaking Community. Just think if there were no one Here who knew the ropes when you arrived to provide information on How to do this or that. Think too of the dedication and determination they have practice to learn English the regulations Etc., to be effective in their jobs. Can you imagine learning English by Reading and interpreting regulations ugh what a Way to learn the language How Many of us have taken on the task to writer lauds apr Effort to All the people who work in the military postal a thanks. System you have made a difficult situation easier by passing along letters to and from the desert shield area incredibly fast. Your turnaround time has been As fast As two Days and has helped keep family news a a news and not i history. A a. \ a a a a i would imagine that All of you Are putting in Long hours sometimes under trying circumstances 1 done to know i you realize How much if Means to receive mail from a try family member but it Means a lot to me. So i thought you should know just How much your work is appreciated. Staff sgt. Elizabeth a. Alber Lindsey air station Germany learn German As they have had to learn English and of the american Way of doing business sure it is a requirement on their part to know English. But for their efforts the need for recognition and a feeling of fair play on the part of the military in Europe especially now during this period of chaos refs Etc., is a must. The next step is for the . And German governments to establish a retraining program to make sure. Those who must or want to continue working in the German Economy have the Opportunity to relearn new techniques Etc., to make themselves marketable for that time when All . Military Are gone. Without recognition and feeling of fair play i am sure they would have Given up Long ago. Being Able to occupy civilian slots taken away earlier by temporary military spouses helps to provide them i am sure at least a feeling that fair play is still an american attribute.
