After driving about 10 minutes we got out of the car and headed up the Mountain on foot. In less than 30 minutes we had Luck and the Hunt was Over. My actual Hunts for Chamois did no to happen quite like that. In be hunted red Deer Roe Deer and other wild game with Success More than i can remember. But although the Success rate among Hunters going for Chamois is above 95 percent i encountered what seemed to be More than a Normal share of failure and frustration. It started in november 1983.1 had gotten a Chance to Hunt through the Usa eur capital game drawing. I drove to Garmisch on a sunday and stayed overnight in a pension where i had often been a guest in past years. I met my guide on time and we headed up the Mountain in a Cable car. We reached the top station started out Over the mountainous terrain and within 15 minutes we saw several Chamois. There must have been seven or eight in a tight group which included two Bucks working on an adversarial relationship. It was the rutting season. I asked my guide whether we were too Short a male or female. Just As he replied we could Only shoot a female we began to realize that every female in the group had a Kitz kid. We shoot a female with Kitz be cause tins would cause the Young animal to perish they soon wandered away from us and we began to walk up up Down and then up some More. For at least two hours we saw nothing. More walking. Still nothing. Then came the big snafu. I was edging Down a Steep Grade when i slipped and injured my foot. We made our Way Back to the Cable car Only to find it Wasny to running. We had to walk Down the Mountain i agonized with every step. \ the next time i went Hunting for Chamois was in the summer of 1989 in an area just South of bad Wiesser. I had been out with my guide for about 15 minutes when i took aim at a Buck High above my position on a Ridge. I was steadying my Rifle and just about ready to squeeze. Suddenly the Buck started walking. He was moving faster up and Down the Ridge. I wailed for him to Stop but he kept moving. Soon he was gone. So the Hunt ended without Success. 1 think 1 was the Only Hunter who went Honie empty handed from that area the entire year. Still the Hunting had been fun. Determined to do better i went again this year toward the end of november. Hunting 111 the Alpine regions can be difficult in november especially if there a a lot of Snow. I knew my chances might not be so Good but other activities earlier in the season prevented my going any other time. I arrived in Garmisch on the sunday after thanksgiving. It was snowing and a great Deal of Snow had already accumulated on the mountains several Days earlier. I was wondering if the weather would ruin the Hunt. But i was prepared i had All the right clothing and a positive Outlook. I remember thinking the main thing i wanted was an enjoyable Hunt successful or not. I met my guide Early monday morning. It was snowing again we drove a few minutes in his car then got out and started up the Mountain. With All the Snow i was glad 1 was wearing Hamas often leggings. They kept my feet dry and warm a we walked upward for about an hour. We were traversing across a wooded slope when i heard a Chamois whistle. I looked but could t see anything. About 10 minutes later we saw one going up a Steep slope in front of us. It suddenly disappeared in the Trees so we waited. A few minutes later a Chamois Buck appeared on the top of a Ridge in a Small Clearing my guide told me to try for a Good shooting position i Laid Down on a Snow Bank and used his and my Rucksack to steady the Rifle. Just As i was about to squeeze the trigger the Buck jumped Down from the Ridge and disappeared waited. Two other Chamois appeared but Only briefly. We were about to move on a Little further when another Buck appeared on top of the same Ridge. 1 quickly took up a shooting position. Things were happening fast. I was trying to get into a Good position. My feet were slipping on the Steen slope and i was trying desperately to keep the muzzle of my Rifle out of the Snow. I got in position. I took off the safety aimed carefully put my Finger on the trigger and squeezed. The Buck lumped Down from the Ridge and disappeared. I had Felt comfortable with the shot and my guide thought i had hit the Buck in the leg or shoulder. He went up to look for the Buck 1 be soon found the animal and rolled it Down the slope to me. Before he returned More Chamois came into the Clearing above us. He shot a Young Buck and rolled him Down to me. Soon we were both Field dressing the two Chamois and 1 saw the Bullet had gone through the heart of the Buck i had taken. While we were working he told me we were Lucky to have found the Chamois in these weather condition. Then he told me some startling news he said nearly 100 percent of the Chamois in Germany must be Climi noted in the next two years. Why 1 asked in Shock. He said it was to protect the environment. Chamois damage Young Trees through their eating habits. C i told him this elimination plan was hard to under stand because the Chamois have always seemed to be part of the Normal Alpine environment. We d1dnt discuss the subject further but 1 got the impression that he a professional Hunter and grass roots expert on the balance Between wildlife and natural growth on Germany a mountains did no to understand anymore than 1 did we headed Down the Mountain. In about 40 minutes we were Back to his car and the Hunt was Over. As we drove Down the Mountain i thought Back at All of my Chamois Hunts t Felt rewarded by the years of experience and this a successful and enjoyable Hunt. 1 know that when 1 look at those Chamois horns on.
