European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 06, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Ice cold Winter is no time to be outside John Windrow a a Quot it a inter in Minnesota is most Cauti Wjk # Ful when viewed through Glass. A of there is a Small Bohemian bar and y a cafe near my digs that is All Glass across the front. This makes for Ideal Winter viewing. I can sip a Glass of wine lean on the bar and soak up the splendor of one of the most Beautiful Parks in Minneapolis. The Park has a Lake Frozen now that makes a gentle curve like a scimitar through the snowy Banks and beneath the Arch of a Stone Bridge. Willows Bend their Graceful branches Down to touch the ice. Ducks and geese still battling their healthy instincts towing southward paddle about a Patch of Blue water at one end of the Lake and chatter loud and Long. In the evening yellow lamps cast a soft glow that silhouettes the Oaks and Birches standing silent in the Snow. Sometimes if the wind Isnit up i pull on my boots and walk around the Lake before returning Judith Krantzas latest Book soared straight to the Best seller list. That a nothing unusual for her sex and Glamour sagas. Page 16. To my digs cast of the Park or circling Back to the cafe to the West. This is the extent of my wintertime activity. Some people believe Winter is the time for skiing sledding ice fishing and other pursuits. I believe that Winter is natures Way of telling us to stay indoors. Many things happen Here to reinforce my feelings about Winter being a time that should be devoted to making soup Reading and Cable Clevi Sion. Just the other Day 19 fear crazed people were rescued off an ice Floe at a Lake up North called Mille lacs. They were ice fishing and the ice they were perched upon broke away from the main piece of Frozen wasteland and floated off merrily on its own. They were All rescued by sheriffs deputies who i Hope gave them a severe talk ing to. Their 10 ice houses were last seen heading to parts unknown. When i read the news accounts of this iceberg adventure it occurred to me that when i lived in South Texas an ice House was a Roadside Shack that sold ice cold Beer and tamales. One could sit there out of the heat sip a cold one and listen to festive music on the Jukebox. In Minnesota an ice House is a place to go sit in a tiny coffin like Box in subzero weather and stare at a Hole in the ice. I believe that is Why texans tend to be outgoing and expansive and minnesotans tend at times to be rather dour i also believe that the plight of the ice Fishers supports another nature theory of mine nature is terribly unforgiving of stupidity. My Cousin Wardell went ice fishing recently. I am not sure but i suspect alcohol was involved. Contents cover Johnny Depp is a Edward scissor hands a a recent addition to the cafes film circuit. Page 10. There were several people in the party and the Only source of heat was a Coleman lamp hanging from the roof of the ice House. Wardell was dancing a Jig trying to warm himself and managed to Knock the lamp neatly through the Hole in the ice. I understand that the lamp continued to glow beaming its eerie cold Light up through the water. The excursion ended a few seconds later. Wardell has since returned to his senses and stays close to the stove during the Winter months. Another thing that minnesotans do is called snowmobiling. It consists of lashing ones self to a machine that looks like an icbms and makes More noise than mtg. Then one goes roaring through the ice and Snow disturbing the Rural Tranquility. The people who do this manage to behead themselves on Snow covered fences ram themselves into Trees and plunge themselves through the ice of insufficiently Frozen lakes with impressive regularity. The editors at my newspaper Call such stories a evolution in action.?. No Man can foresee his end. I know not How ill meet my maker perhaps in a plane crash perhaps choking on a Sliver of sirloin. But i know i will not perish on a snowmobile although i May be run Down by one if one of the maniacs roars into greater Minneapolis. Nor will i die on skis. If god wanted us to Whiz through the Woods bashing our brains out on mighty Oaks he would t have Given us Nice warm cafes and bars us from. Winters howling blast.
