Mary this is Ann talking. Please dear follow through on those suggestions. Your future happiness depends on it. Dear Ann Landers i have always been in favor of equal Opportunity regardless of race color or sex but enough is enough. The idea that women should join men in combat is the craziest thing in be Ever heard. Under no circumstances would i want my daughter to serve in a combat outfit. I fought in All five campaigns in Europe during world War ii. I was there from the invasion of Normandy to the fall of Berlin. I received the Silver Star and five Bronze 1 stars. Unless you be been through it there is no Way you can imagine what combat is like. You have to experience it combat Means sleeping in a Muddy foxhole eating a can of Beans for your main meal of the Day urinating and defecating wherever you happen to be and keeping your toilet paper on your head under your helmet because its the Only dry spot on your entire body when it Rains. Combat Means watching your buddy step on a land mine and get blown to pieces. Women who have the crazy idea that they should be a treated equally and allowed to fight alongside men done to know what they Are asking for. In a Happy that the . Military will not permit it and i Hope to god that policy never changes. Barry Ziff former sergeant 89th inf div Encino Calif. Dear Barry Many women have been fighting for combat rights for years. Perhaps your letter Wili give them second or third thoughts. Thanks for using language that conveys the message effectively. Gem of the Day education is what a fellow gets from Reading the Fine print. Experience is we hat he gets if he does no to read it. If the physical destruction of Iraq did take place would the reasons for this conflict be eliminated ? sadly the answer is no. After we put aside the brinkmanship being played by Al sides we still have failed to face the reason this recent Middle East conflict has developed. As Long As we fail to address the question of the israeli occupation of the occupied territories then we Only commit ourselves to future conflicts in this troubled Region. It has become obvious that Saddam Hussein from the very Start was More interested in the palestinian question than he was in the physical occupation of Kuwait. Kuwait is Only the bargaining Chip in this crisis. Saddam is now seen by Many of the Arab factions As the Only Leader willing to take on this critical and fundamental question and hence the support by Many Arab groups such As the Plo. Instead of preparing for another meaningless War let us take the Opportunity to sit Down with All sides involved including the israelis and establish a permanent and orderly plan for the re establishment of the palestinian Homeland in the occupied territories. To Many this Means capitulation to Saddam a terms for withdrawal from Kuwait. But just As we could not defeat a determined Peoples movement in Vietnam neither will the palestinian cause be Defeated by tanks and missiles. Let not the Reader think that this writer is anti Szmet in or pro palestinian but one who believes the truth should be told and faced. Let a Saint repeat our foreign policy mistakes of the past but Chart a course for the future which addresses the True causes of conflict be tween actions and Peoples. Peace among All nations May be elusive but it is impossible the truth is ignored. A Ted j.
