Mel Otte who is a part of operation desert storm. We would like to let All of the people serving their country know that they Are being thought of and supported in what they Are doing. We know that they done to like being in this situation. A group of us have started having a support our troops rallies on saturdays and they keep getting bigger and bigger. We have had a Florist giving away yellow roses and ribbons and various companies passing out american i pass out a to any service member addresses and yellow ribbons. A last weekend we had a Convoy of about 60 semis that paraded in a five mile Circle around our rally area for about 2v hours. It was really something to see and hear smell also. They All had their lights on and there were yellow ribbons flags and a we support our troops signs on the trucks. They also kept their hands on the air horns most of the group had operation desert storm to shirts made up and one of our members gave one to Cher. Reference to the 40 Louisiana guardsmen who went awol from fort Hood Texas to get a Day off the biggest complaint i read was that the soldiers got no time off. They were promised two Days of were notified it had been changed to one Day. The guardsmen then complained that this a messed up their plans and that they had not had a Day off since Jan. 21. I am sure the transition from civilian life to military life is not easy but others have conquered it. The guardsmen were like the Active duty soldiers a they signed on the dotted line and took an oath. This was a career Choice. National guard could be viewed As a second Job if you will but the possibility still exists that it the unit could be called to Active duty if the need arose. No one thought our country would be in this situation a year ago. The guardsmen complained of poor medical care not enough food no time for Church services unreasonable military training. Our soldiers in the Gulf have to practically hide to have religious services their military training is 24 hours a Day and they done to have the Opportunity to eat three meals a Day in Nice clean facilities or to run Down to Rancier Avenue or route 440 in Killeen Texas to grab a bite to eat at any hour of the night. ,. ,.1 am positive that none of them is loved or missed any More than the deployed soldiers. Done to expect to a Call in sick when you Are ill that is not a Benefit in the Active duty Job Market. A Soldier is a Soldier 24 hours a Day. While you Are Home on your three Days off think of your fellow soldiers in the Gulf taking life one Day at a time. A a -7. A. Many europeans and americans have taken to the streets to protest what they Felt was a War for Oil. Having lived in a Small German Community for the past 2 years we have always Felt welcomed by our German neighbors. This past Friday evening we heard some noises coming from the Home across the Street. We looked out the window and believe our eyes. Hung Over the upper portion of the garage was a very Large american Flag. We approached our German neighbors and commented on the Flag. He told us that he had raised the Flag to show How he and his family feel. Our neighbor escaped from East Germany 15 years ago to have free Dom he is not. Afraid to show his support. We Are very proud to have our neighbor show such an outward sign of support and concern for americans. Please know that Many of our German neighbors do care and support the americans 10q percent. I. A Lauretta Viglianco Rhein main a Germany. A Reader not amused by Bones Bury s Huhner i have a complaint concerning your publication of the doonesbury comic strip showing a Soldier talking on a portable phone asking the person if he could relay a message to his wife or Girlfriend that he was Fine and Well and in the next picture it showed the vehicle and the Soldier on the phone exploding. In View of the situation in the Middle East i Feci that this Type of a thu More was totally unwarranted and com Petely irresponsible. I realize that some sort of Syi cation bar Cerant May be. In effect with Doones and that obligations must be met however this Kint attempted humor is in very poor taste. If possible should be kept from publication As it affects the Moi of both service members and their families. 7. A William Earl Wagner operation desert storm on Monte Cassino attack called misleading regarding the a tide comparing Saddam with Genghis Khan the last paragraph was misleading if not totally inaccurate the article says it hat the germans fortified the monastery of Monte Cassino in Italy. The truth is that Only the surrounding Hill that the monastery occupied was fortified and the monastery itself was devoid of German troops. The allies dropped tons of bombs on the innocent monastery Structure to demonstrate its pinpoint bomb my technique. Because the monastery had no Milit significance the allies were not Able to take the Hill or another three months and Only when the tier Nui Nail withdrawn from the Countryside. The american military has already admitted that was unnecessary to bomb Monte Cassino. It is a to u w Antlers the ?T90s continue to Foster the fall of the Hasty bombing of this religious shrine.
