These men and women Are dedicated to providing High Quality care for patients while completing specially training. When they Are forced to work 36 hours at a stretch they can to possibly function at 100 percent efficiency. The patients Are the losers. Programs that require stressed out exhausted residents to continue to work Are risking the lives of these patients. This practice must be changed. We Are Happy to report that the american medical association is throwing its weight behind abolishing the old work Schedu is this support is of great significance. We Are hoping that other organizations which influence and Contro the standards for residency training programs will also take a stand in favor of sane work hours for resident physicians. Dear Ann Landers i read with interest your column on residents interns working 36 hours on and 12 hours off was trained in that Era and am writing to defend  the 36 hours on duty and i hours off sounds a lot tougher than it actually is. A fair amount of sleep can dear Abby in a recent Issue of Parade Magazine i saw a Brief article enclosed that disturbed me greatly. It details a Parent granting permission for his 6-year-old child to donate a kidney to a Chimpanzee suf. Fering from Simian nephritis the item read a the father of Little Brandy Oxenrider visited the ailing primate in his Cage at the Perkins animal clinic in Atlanta bearing a Large Bunch of bananas. A was a family we Are 100 percent committed to animal welfare a said the father a 40-year-old health food store owner a but sometimes it can be kind of frustrating. I heard about about a Laboratory rat out in California who needs a heart transplant. Id really like to donate mine but How will it fit into that tiny Little Chest cavity  removing a kidney from a 6-year-old child for donation to a  outrageous its one thing for an adult to make an informed decision based on facts and potential risks to donate an Organ but this 6-year-old obviously does not understand the risks of surgery and going through life with Only one kidney. Unless this child  ill with no Hope for recovery this is outright child abuse and should be stopped if this were the Case there would be lots of parents or children on transplant waiting lists who would be disappointed and angry to hear of this situation. Ann i can Tell you with absolute Candor that i have no recollection of Ever witnessing a mistake  from exhaustion due to Long hours nor do i remember complaints from the physicians who were on Hospital duty although obviously there were some complaints from spouses at Home As expressed in your recent column.
