European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 08, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Arm Landers dear Ann Landers my husband and i Are european. We have resided in the United states since 1981. My husbands son by a former marriage has been living with us for the past year and is now a senior in High school. We Felt that this final year in an american school would make him More sophisticated As you know High schools sponsor dances during the year including a Winter formal and the famous prom. A a Gerard wanted to attend the Winter formal but walked at the $50 Cost which we agreed was quite an expenditure. He was somewhat disappointed to miss the affair but did not complain. A few weeks ago we received information about the senior prom. Gerard really wanted to go and the Cost Syd med reasonable a $40. However after talking with friends he Learned it would be closer to $400 for the Tuxedo rental a limousine tickets for him and his Date the girls Corsage a meal for two at a fancy restaurant and professional photographs. L am shocked at this figure. I run my own business from Home and have an infant to feed and clothe. Four Hundred dollars is almost a weeks earnings for me. We originally agreed to pay half the Cost of the prom. Now we Veall decided its too costly. Gerard is disappointed to miss what would have been the highlight of his social life As a teen Ager. I wonder How other parents feel about spending this dear Abby dear Abby i am a 36-year-old woman with a wonderful husband and a terrific 4-year-old son. I also have a very immature unmarried 21-year-old stepdaughter a Dolly a who is expecting a baby any minute. The baby a father disappeared when Dolly announced her pregnancy. She wants to keep the baby and i have been getting a lot of pressure from my husbands family who think the logical place for Dolly and her baby is with her father and me. Abby i done to want Dolly and her baby moving in with us because Dolly has always been Lazy and irresponsible and id have to take care of the baby. Also i had planned on returning to College in the fall when our son will be in school full time. I feel strongly that since Dolly decided to have sex decided not to have an abortion and decided to keep her baby the baby is her responsibility a not mine. Need i Tell you How unpopular my decision has made me with my husbands family he does not blame me but his Mother and Sisters think i am selfish cruel and unreasonable a although they did not offer to take her in. How do you vote Abby the wicked Stepmother dear a a wicked in a voting with you. There is no reason Why you wednesday May 8, 1991 kind of Money on their teen agers. / i am Well aware of the importance of celebrating life a milestones with appropriate ceremonies. The High school prom commemorates a rite of passage from childhood to adulthood. My Gripe is the Price tag. Can Only the Rich in America have Tun a Anaheim dear Anaheim i too find a $400 evening for teen agers outrageously expensive and have for a Long time suggested that the schools put a Stop to this sort of thing. High school kids done to need tuxedos limousines fancy dinners in a downtown hotel and professional photographs. The problem is that a great Many teen agers work these Days and make very Good Money if they want to spend it on what we consider outrageous luxuries no one has the right to say they can to. Unless the school changes the system parents Are helpless. A dear Ann Landers recently you printed a letter from the Mother of a red headed boy who was a standout in any crowd. People kept asking the same dumb questions about the origin of his hair color. My Nephew had that problem when he was growing up. One Day while shopping Jimmy became especially annoyed when someone asked a where did you get that red hair a he blurted out a Ann fan c creators Syndicate. Should postpone going Back to school because your husbands daughter decided to keep her baby. Dolly is olt Lenough to accept responsibility for her actions and decision. Dear Abby your answer to a overtaxed a the couple who were trying to find a clergy person to quietly bless their spiritual Bond or while the irs would consider them to be still in a a a singles tax bracket was both inaccurate and unkind. Wanting to have the Church sacrament of Matrimony without the Irsos unspeakable tax penalty for married persons is not a crooked a Abby. It is reasonable and moral. It is also easily achieved in Texas. As a Texas lawyer and Church member 1 sympathize with your Reader. A holy Matrimony and a Legal marriage Are not the same thing. There Are thousands of Christian clergymen in most denominations who consider their Christian function More important than their governmental one and the two Are unrelated. They will not require a state marriage License nor will they report the ceremony to the state since they Are performing a sacrament involving Only the couple god and the Church. If the couple desires it a Legal marriage after living together and establishing themselves As a married couple in time they Are indeed legally married by common Law. A a.
