I decided Early on that if i Ever had occasion to write to a newspaper about anything i would do it through you. As a Veteran of world War ii i was distressed recently to hear that Martha Raye appeared on television at an awards ceremony in a wheelchair. Ann this dear lady in my opinion is one of the great heroines of world War ii i Hope and Pray that she is in Good health. I was privileged to be Martha Raye s jeep Driver for a few Days during the North african Campaign when she entertained the troops of the 2nd army div. At one of her appearances miss Raye tripped on the Steps leading to a hastily constructed outdoor stage. She suffered a painful ankle injury but refused to Quot have a doctor Check it out until after she had put on a terrific show for the 20,000 assembled soldiers. Martha Raye was nothing Short of fabulous when it came to entertaining the troops. She was always full of Energy and smiling never missed an engagement or let on that she might be exhausted. Our division made miss Raye an honorary Captain in recognition of her Gutsy resolve to make the morale of our combat servicemen her top priority.
