It is True that in private most people Are allowed to conduct themselves As they wish within reason. However Many acceptable private Behaviours can result in arrest and conviction should you practice them in Public. So it is with foul and profane language a it is acceptable in a private Arena but is considered socially inappropriate in Public. For example if you Are privately in the presence of a person who offends you with language or behaviour you Are free to either ask them to leave if the private area belongs to you or to absent yourself if you Are in their space. Either Way you have a defense against future attacks . Not associating with that person. In Public however people Are defenceless. We All have to go to Banks stores and offices in Pursuit of both our private business and our official duties and we must necessarily by our Public presence tolerate the behaviour of those around us. It is unfair to ask people to listen to abusive language in that situation just As it would be inappropriate to ask them to tolerate a soccer Ball bouncing off their Heads. No matter How much you defend your non existent right to use language you admit is foul it remains rude and socially unacceptable As determined by countless generations of society. Granted these ancient words Are common in All societies but they Are acknowledged As Strong offensive words with a fairly closely defined area of use. Racial epithets Are now All but illegal in any Public situation because they reduce a person to a condition of birth their race. How can it be that words which reduce a person to a Mere bodily function have greater social acceptance even when the object of the sentence is not a person the words convey a repugnant picture. It is a sad commentary on our society that one so often hears them used in Public. So in answer to your question As to who the teacher thinks she is in objecting to profanity she is the mouthpiece for All the disgusted listeners who have to hear the speech of manner less drivel spouting near cretins from a grammatical standpoint who insist on polluting the atmosphere with their ignorance. You May flaunt your Defiance of common Courtesy but rest assured you Arentt impressing anyone. A Valerie Moon Munich Germany a shooting straight this is in response to a recent Leth entitled Quot guns Are for let me begin by saying i Hope he does t teach history or logic. His knowledge of history is extremely deficient and his application of logic is simply non existent. The first glaring example is the assertion that a "3,000-mile stretch of Ocean Quot kept America Safe until modern times. The writer states the Ocean made a Supply line impossible to maintain. This is simply untrue. From the Start of the american revolution until the mid-1800s, America s primary enemy was England. Britain had two items that completely negated the Atlantic Ocean a Canada and the largest Navy in the world. Canada gave Britain a ready Supply base for men and material and a string of defensive forts irom which to strike. With her Large Navy England could easily bring anything Canada did not have in a timely manner. Further fault in the writer s historical knowledge can be found in his final paragraph. Let me answer All his questions for him the serfs not peasants of Russia did not defeat Napoleon or Hitler. In fact the serfs viewed Napoleon As a Savior. They viewed Hitler in the same Light until the Reich began to brutalize them worse than Stalin did. Finally it was the russian Imperial army working with various coalitions that Defeated Napoleon. The red army with Allied assistance Defeated Hitler. A More appropriate analogy from recent history would be the democracy crackdown in China. One thinks of that student standing in front of a tank a Brave but totally useless gesture. We know that unarmed students were gunned Down and the movement was crushed. However if these same students had been armed the result could have been different. Please watch who you Are calling a Coward you might need him and his gun again. Gary l. Willford or. Oos Are a form of animal exploitation of the worst kind. I will never forget the Gorilla in my Hometown zoo. Even As a child i Felt sorry for this Gortha and Felt a sense of guilt for being of the human race and putting this Gorilla behind bars like a prisoner who has committed no crime. This Gorilla sat there alone in a Cage his Only companion a tire. When i was last Home newspapers reported zoo animals were dying of dehydration. Unfortunately most zoos resemble poorly run museums where the animals sit in pitifully Small cages. The popular belief that zoos keep species from becoming extinct is not All True. How Many animals in zoos Are actually on the endangered species list very few since zoos tend to favor popular and exotic animals the ones that will draw big crowds. Zoos tend to ignore the less favored species whether they Are endangered or not. Ever wonder what happens to All those cute offspring Horn in zoos during springtime the reality is not As pleasant As wed like to imagine. Animals Are sold to laboratories to be used in experiments or sold to air uses a another form of animal exploitation. Quot surplus animals Are also sold to a game farms to be hunted or they Are simply killed at the zoo itself. Zoos have definitely improved Over the years but they still have a Long Way to go before they can offer Quality of life for the animals. Those who do want to support the exploitation of animals a and Are interested in learning about them a should help by preserving their habitats. They should either observe them in the wild or spend time learning letters to the editor about them through books pictures or films. A Leah Diamond Berlin let s clean our Back Yard yes our country does have an incredibly Large National deficit but a giving handouts to needy nations is no reason. Our country a ability to provide earthquake and famine Relief and economic Aid involves a moral obligation to fellow human beings. Our ability to do so is one of the things that makes our country great. The problem of our own people going hungry and homeless coupled with our governments inability to provide Aid to them Are a few of the things which make our country bad. Going Back to what another writer Calls a problem the Cost of providing Aid to needy nations is hardly a drop in the bucket when considering the size of our National debt. Besides if we go Back in history and examine the roots of Many third world countries their problems Stem from Western intervention of one kind or another. We owe it to these divided and exploited countries to get them Back on their feet whether it was the United states England France or any other Western nation which might be responsible for much of the controversy found in these third world countries. If we want to reduce our National debt we need to realize the magnitude of incidents such As the savings and loan scandal expensive drawn out court hearings such is the Iran Contra Case and our corrupt government officials who continue to give themselves raises squander our tax dollars and disguise pressing issues like education unemployment and racism under the cloak of special boards and committees set up to study these problems. In a country where less than 5 percent of the population holds 80 percent of the Money it amazes me that our Well off continue to exploit the masses. As far As raising the Price of Stamps a again a that a ridiculous. The . Postal service has a deficit rapidly approaching $2 billion themselves. How can a Price increase help our debt perhaps an increase in cigarette and alcohol tax May help but expensive Stamps we continue to help other nations while our people suffer but if we could just clean up our own Back Yard there would be plenty for All.
