Such an outcome would have left the cup in the hands of the europeans because they were already in Possession of the most important trophy in International Golf. But when Langer a putt Slid by the Hole thus ending his match with Irwin in a halve the United states was handed a 14v2-13v2 Victory. Irwin and Langer made up the final match of the Day and they were still on the 16th Hole when the rest of the matches were Over. Irwin was 1-up at the time and he knew he needed Only to earn a halve in the match with Langer in order to end the americans longest Ryder cup drought. But after making a clutch 4-foot putt to the the 16th Hole Irwin three putted the Par-3 17th and Langer spar sent the match to the final Hole All even. After a poor drive Irwin put his second shot Well right of the Green and his Chip shot came up 20 feet Short. Langer meanwhile was Over the Green As Well and his Chip rolled six feet past. Irwin left his putt two feet Short and somewhat surprisingly Langer conceded that putt for a bogey. The Ryder cup then was on Langer a shoulders and when he missed the putt his Mouth flew open in anguish. The first person to offer words of Consolation was Irwin and As the americans cheers echoed across the Ocean course Langer walked away in tears. A i feel sorry for Bernhard a Irwin said. Calcavecchia needed Only to make a double bogey five at the Par-3 17th to end the match but he hit two balls in the water to lose that Hole and bogeyed the final Hole As Well.
