Medical officials Are bracing for shortages because of a recent decision by the Pentagon to ban a half million persian Gulf War veterans from donating blood. That decision was made after about 22 vets were found to be infected with a parasite contracted while in the persian Gulf Region. The parasite causes the disease leishmaniasis transmitted through the bites of Sand flies. The disease is treated with intravenous drugs. Symptoms include fever diarrhoea and abdominal pains. Soldiers with the disease Are being treated at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. According to a report in the Navy times no members of the air Force marines or Navy have been diagnosed with the disease. The ban on military blood donations applies to serv ice members and civilians who served in saudi Arabia Kuwait Iraq Bahrain Qatar the United Arab emirates Oman and Yemen since aug. 1,1990.
