I believe the officer who wrote that letter has no idea How much uncertainty this draw Down is causing Many enlisted and some officers families to face. Although we Are a Volunteer Force i think it is ridiculous to Call these people selfish and ignorant for expecting what got most of them to join the military in the first place Job Security medical and dental benefits Money for College and 30 Days paid vacation a year see the recruitment brochures. Many of the enlisted people affected by the draw Down Are still working on a College degree. When forced to separate from the military these individuals will have to find jobs in an almost nonexistent Job Market. Maybe he Hasni to read the latest unemployment statistics in the United states. Congress have picked a More Inopportune time to Start a draw Down. Congress has acted a bit prematurely on this one considering the situation in the Gulf has not been totally put to rest. I guess that is Why the individuals being forced out Are being put on inactive Reserve for a set number of years. Let us Hope we done to have to test the patriotism of these people who were called selfish and ignorant. In a willing to bet if called up those same individuals would return and fight to defend the same government which May have forced them to face unemployment welfare and possibly homelessness. A sgt. . Boyd Pitburg Germany a How times pc changed websters dictionary defines award to give in recognition of Merit or achievement a prize. Recently i was Reading the world Book encyclopedia on awards decorations and medals. Decorations and medals were actually awarded to soldiers. Yes at one time in our military history awards were Given to soldiers As decorations or medals. Now we have written a new Page of military history on awards decorations and medals. Sometimes a Soldier will receive a document stating that he is authorized to Wear an award. If this Soldier would like to Wear this authorized award decoration or medal he can buy it from cafes. The most recent award for desert storm soldiers was announced in the stars and stripes. When this award is available it can be purchased from cafes. Is this is the new Way to Honor soldiers a Gerard Hegel Mannheim German playing games this letter is in response to the article a general wont Sanction fantasy As a historical simulation gamer i am disappointed in this decision which is clearly based on a Lack of information As to what simulation role playing really is. That a a. Dungeons and dragons has been linked with violent behaviour and suicide a is like saying that the ownership of firearms causes Homicidal behaviour. My friends and 1 play historical simulation games that recreate famous military campaigns throughout world history. Does this make me a depraved War Lover for playing these games does the playing of a Day games Lead to the invasion of Europe i think not. Some of my friends no play dungeons and dragons Are believe it or not levelheaded intelligent people. Some of them even Holt leadership positions in the military. This article implies that these people must be a a unbalanced in some Way for playing this game. As for a the command will take no Chance that even one Soldier could be adversely affected by the game a anyone who would be a adversely affected is going to cause you problems anyway. The game itself does not cause problems. This is like Banning pos privately owned vehicles so As to take no Chance that one Soldier might drive intoxicated. You cannot baby sit everyone and gamers have to be responsible about their Hobby just like anyone else. The idea of command sponsored simulation gaming is an excellent idea. Military history simulations in particular can be an educational tool for any Soldier or civilian. I realize dungeons and dragons is not history but if i were a commander i would encourage my soldiers to engage in a club oriented game activity Tim Wilson Stuttgart Germany editor s note letters from readers expressing their viewpoints or opinions Are published daily in this space. I sent a card from my local Apo to England on nov. 22. It was received on Jan. 28, 67 Days later. This is by no Means an isolated incident although it is certainly a record. Transit times of Over a month Are common and in be yet to have an item arrive in less than two weeks. Mind you we re Only talking Turkey to England for this so called service i pay 50 cents per card or letter. The whole thing is rather pathetic really. But my Story has a Happy ending in be discovered that the turkish postal system put gets my letters there in an average of four Days with the record being an unbelievable two Days. Price about 26 cents. Go figure. A staff sgt. Scott m. Spencer inc Riik a Turkey a a wasteful idling apparently concern for the environment patriotism and Good citizenship Isnit enough to get people to Stop letting their cars Idle for five 10, 15 minutes or longer because i still see them do it every Day. When i ask them Why they never have an answer. A a it a put on a coat. ?o1 want to listen to the your Battery can run the radio for hours with no problem. A a in a wanning up the driving at slow speeds for two or three minutes will do that they just done to think. If concern about their world and their country Isnit enough to make them think How about a few selfish reasons wasting Gas costs Money. Of course there is the Cost of the gasoline but that a just the Start. When engines run at Idle speeds deposits build up on the Cylinder Wall shortening the life of the engine and resulting in expensive repair Bills. Letters to the editor. Recently you published a couple of comments from people who tried to justify wasting gasoline. One said the germans waste gasoline driving too fast. If the germans jumped off a 10-Stoty building would you jump too then there was the a old wives tales about blowing up your engine if you done to let it a warm up for half an hour. 1 lived in Alaska for three years and never let my engine warm up even at temperatures of minus 20. I never had any trouble nor did i Ever hear of anyone having trouble doing that. Most Peoples cars Are warm by the time they get out of their neighbourhood. If yours Isnit it probably needs a repair. A Floyd a. Newsom Kapaun air station German Patriot Days gee it must be Nice to know that your husband is going to be working a 10-hour shift. Re All about shift work our husbands Are members of a Patriot battalion. Their work Day usually begins at 6 a.m., and we never know when it is going to end. We cannot plan on them being Home in time for supper. We cannot even count on seeing them on weekends or holidays. Cd charge of quarters was supposed to have ended last year but our husbands Are still pulling this duty. They Are also pulling extra guard duty since the rest of the battalion is deployed to saudi Arabia. We know they Are supposed to get 24 hours off after pulling duty. Of course if they Are pulling duty wednesday to thursday they must stay for sergeants time so they re not relieved until the next afternoon. On the average when duty is killed they work anywhere from 28 ours to 36 hours. They do not sleep run personal errands or work out at the gym. When their Day is a a Over they Are often called at Home to handle any problems that May come up. They sometimes have to return to work. Forget about planning travel and Leisure time. The duty roster is not posted for any More than five Days. The roster has also been known to change daily. We know we Are not the Only wives whose husbands work Long hard hours. We Are not complaining. We just want you to know that you Are not alone and that in the military there Are Many with husbands who do not work just a Normal work a Karla Willmann a Cynthia Hamlin prism Germany pen pals 1 am 28 yen old and would Ilka to hav pan Pafe from All Over Europe end the .a.
