A once the crashing ended it was Davey Allison a Daytona 500. A 14-car wreck Midway through sundays race eliminated most of the top challengers for Allison who entered the race at Daytona International Speedway As one of the favourites. The Victory was not an easy one though with Michael Waltrip and Morgan Shepherd pressing the son of three time Daytona 500 Winner Bobby Allison Over the final 100 laps. Waltrip fell out of Contention with an engine problem nine laps from the end and Shepherd driving his first race for the Wood Brothers team could not mount a serious Challenge on the final Lap. None of them had Ever won a scary a biggest event before but it was the 30-year-old Allison a a second place finisher to his father in 1988 a that had the upper hand. He led 127 of the last 145 laps losing the top spot Only on pit stops during caution flags in the 200-Lap race. A this is a Sweet race right now a Allison said. A i just can to believe it. In a just shaking All Over. We finally won the Daytona 500. A in about 30 minutes ill probably collapse from disbelief. I spent about 90 percent of each Lap looking in the Mirror trying to figure out when Morgan was going to go. We finished second to that car in Michigan so i guess turnabout is fair the Only other father and son to both win Daytona were Lee Petty the first Winner in 1959, and his son Richard the Only seven time Winner and driving in his 32nd and last 500 on sunday. Richard the King of Stock car racing was involved in the Melee that changed the course of the race on Lap 93, but was Able to run to the end to Start what he says is his final season As a Driver. A it was Nice i was actually racing for position on the last Lap a said Petty who finished Well off the Pace. Geoff Bodine finished third followed by Alan Kul Wicki and Dick trickle. The first four finishers were All Fords but not necessarily the thunderbird that were expected to run at the front. Dale Earnhardt the two time defending Winston cup Champion was ninth after being involved in the big crash. The Competition at the front of the Field was thinned out considerably by the massive crash that began when Bill Elliott Ernie Irvan and pole starter Sterling Marlin went three wide on the Backstretch. Elliott who had been leading the race was on the outside and Irvan on the inside when they pulled ahead of Marlin and squeezed in toward each other. The cars then nudged each other and began spinning and crashing All Over the Backstretch. Before it was Over Earnhardt Darrell Waltrip Dale Jarrett Chad Little Bobby Hillin jr., hut Stricklin Rusty Wallace Mark Martin Petty Kulwicki and Ken Schrader became involved. A i was coming Down off the Comer Ernie was coming up and it caught Sterling in the Middle. The next thing i knew i was Marlin said a i kind of got sandwiched. We were just racing hard. I done to know if Ernie got Loose. He kind of came up and Bill kind of came Down. I was on the brakes. I almost missed it but it just barely Hung my front end and turned me into Allison and Shepherd were running fourth and fifth and somehow made it through unscathed. Knocked out of the race at least briefly were Marlin and Elliott the teammates who started in the front Row Martin Waltrip Wallace Jarrett and Schrader. Elliott Waltrip and Wallace came Back later to run for season Points but remained far out of Contention. Schrader came away with a sore Chest and shoulder and a sprained ankle while Jarrett driving his first race for the new team of Washington redskins coach Joe Gibbs had a contusion to his Chest. The rest of the Drivers escaped injury. All the rest lost at least one Lap to the remaining leaders. That left Only two former 500 winners Derrick Cope and Geoff Bodine among the top 22 at the Halfway Point and Cope went out with an engine problem minutes later virtually assuring a new Winner. The race started out extremely clean with the first caution Flag not coming out until Light showers began in turns one and two on the 81st Lap. At 80 laps Allison was leading and averaging 185.854 Mph which was easily a record to that Point. Elliott had set the previous record for the first 80 laps at 176.211 in the 1985 race. Attrition was extremely Low until the decisive crash but among the Early outs were Brett Bodine and Ricky Rudd both with engine problems. Another crash occurred on Lap 144 when Rookie Kerry Teague turned Rick Wilson around As the drove slowly toward the pit Entrance. Both continued. Irvane a spin in turn two on Lap 165 brought out the fourth and final yellow Flag and set up the dash to the finish. There were Only 20 laps run under caution in the race with Allison averaging 160.256 Mph. He won $244,050 for his 14th career Victory.
