Advertising Tel fax 0615s-601412cheers for truckers Well Here we go again. In a highly peeved As i think of the Berlin Airlift. Not peeved Over the project and what it stands for because that is what we Are All about humanitarian projects. As i listened to German foreign minister Hans Dietrich Genscher a opening speech i could not help but recall earlier years at the Celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the Berlin Airlift when Many praises were Given to the pilots for their untiring efforts flying through All weather conditions. Pats on the Back were Given to the flight controllers at Tempelhof Central Airport in Berlin. During one interview in the hangar credit was Given to one of the local workers for Long hours of off loading the Many planes hauling food and Coal. You see it was like this on the Frankfurt end. Those pilots not Only flew Long hours but they also hauled a lot of cargo from Railhead to the planes loading it All. You no doubt have guessed where i m coming from a yes the truckers. All the ammo foodstuffs and other supplies that helped them to survive in Battle were carried in their packs. So for once lets hear it for the truckers. Lets Tell the people who the real Unsung heroes in the hauling world really Are. A Joseph Pryor Merlenbach Germany sacrifices needed to fix the problem would Send a Strong signal thundering through the National and global Economy. That message would be that America was Back on track and the 21st Century was going to be another american Century. A capt. Of that 50 percent those who Are really aware of the issues and the stands of their candidate on these issues Are few. I find a vast majority of representatives voting not for the Good of the nation but Only in a manner that will get them re elected. This is done through a pork barrel politics a where special projects and special funds Are added to legislation for a congressman a state and District. This mockery of democracy continues until a Bill is virtually unrecognizable when it reaches the president for signature. Then not having a line item veto the president is forced to sign the Bill into Law. Far from blameless the president has allowed the process to continue Over the years also in the fear of not being re elected. And what have we As voters gained from this process an Ever growing budget deficit that is out of control. So out of control that no one wants to even talk about it. In 1990, the . Government paid $176 billion in interest on our National debt. That is More than we spent on social programs and Law enforcement combined. This figure is Only behind National defense and social Security and medicare As a percentage of Federal spending for 1990. Its not that the government hides these figures i found them on Page 5 of my 1991 1040ez income tax instruction Booklet. Its just that they done to think anyone cares. If the Federal budget deficit continues to grow at its current rate in about 10 years we will not be Able to afford to pay the interest and continue to run the government. That is reality. No one wants to talk about it the president in his state of the Union address gave it lip service but no one is willing to face this reality. We must balance the Federal budget and begin to reduce the National debt. This single act of leadership looking the american voter in the Eye and admitting the spending mistakes of the past asking for the across the boar new Outlook needed i feel uncomfortable about some Peoples Strong opinion against Japan. I have to ask the people who act As if they done to look at our history to understand a Little bit More before they so hastily get excited. Although i believe japanese people have the tendency to be isolationist like i understand How and Why they Are that Way. Japan had been completely isolated from the world for thousands of years except for occasional visits from Only Korea and China. This does no to mean hundreds of years. But it indeed needs to now improve and change its Outlook at this world stage. I always think japanese governors formal messages or speeches cause More trouble than their meaning this Means they Are in fact not Good at socializing with other countries. Another thing at the end of world War ii Japan declared it would disarm permanently and agreed to allow All american bases to stay under the control of Gen. Douglas Macarthur who very much encouraged Japan to rebuild. It was not so easy to pursue such Opportunity from nothing left in Tokyo Osaka or other big cities except Only Burnt Fields i remember clearly when i was still a student that a submarine showed up at Waseko naval base which caused a disturbance nationwide especially by the students. In general people of the new generation hardly realize How important the military Security is. The others who experienced the defeat of the last War do. And most japanese appreciate what America did and does. Now do you really think that the solution to americans economic crisis is to blame it All on Japan a Kumiko m. Duvall Raf Lakenheath England disappointing Effort those of you who like to keep up with the year round sport of Middle East peacemaking will Likely be As disappointed with the second round of letters to the editor Post persian Gulf War talks As with the first. For this the state department is at fault it has for so Long been enamoured of the palestinian question that discussions of stability Nave Given Way to obsession with a single Issue. Instead of making an Effort to shape foreign policy in the Southern Oil producing Region a As political and economic necessities would dictate a . Secretary of state James a. Baker Iii focuses on a 45-mile-wide strip of land up North known As the israeli occupied territories. More remarkable than this stunning Lack of pragmatism a healthy dose of which is required when it comes to Middle East peace is the degree to which Israel is coerced on the subject of the territories. Bakery a insistence that Israel capitulate to the palestinians by honouring their demand for territorial Independence carries with it an insistence that Israel give up its Only Means of Domestic stability. It is or should be impossible to deny the strategic realities of the occupied territories. With or without continued jewish settlement there israelis future will be determined by the West Bank and Gaza. No amount of diplomatic gymnastics or Wishful thinking will change this. A Patricia James Weik Auerbach Germany Small kids big mess. As for litter around recycling bins what i suspect is that parents Are requiring Small children to make these recycling deposits for them not considering that their children Are not tall enough to place the recyclables into the proper bins. The children Are also required to take regular trash to the Large dumpsters. Often they cannot reach up High enough to put the garbage inside. Please parents if you have Small children you must use some common sense about the disposal of your garbage and recyclables. I have seen Small children in our area trying to take garbage out. I can see for myself that they will not be Able to manage proper disposal of the heavy bags of garbage let alone try to put recyclables into the Small Hole at the top of the Correct Container. At times our garbage and recycling area looks like something in a third world country.
