When we were needed we were there in some cases for entire careers. Most of us simply decided to serve our country forsaking More glamorous and lucrative careers and knowing we might be called upon for the unthinkable War. Hundreds of thousands of us deployed to the desert. When the timeworn ideals of duty Honor and country called we answered. How soon they forget. Now we Arentt needed anymore. The cold War is Over and we won. And so its an election year and we find ourselves faced with a More vicious enemy than we faced in the desert a politicians who will step on anyone in order to be re elected. After enduring the hardships of military life we Are suddenly faced with election year demagogy and military cutbacks have become the rallying cry. As columnist Tom Terpen recently wrote in the stars and stripes we Are vulnerable because we won not because we failed. Soldiers Are being told to get out after having been promised the Security of retirement in return for our 20-year sacrifice. We deserve to be rewarded for our successes. Not discarded with such callousness. A chief warrant officer 4 Michael j. Menard Illus him Germany we done to need Dahmer a Man who has destroyed Many lives has been sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms. How did this Man carry out All these brutal killings Jeffrey l. Dahmer a serial killer murdered and dismembered 15 Young men and boys. Our society has enough problems with the diseases that we Haven to found cures for we done to need people in our society killing one another for their own selfish reasons. No one has the right to take a human life. The victims lost the Opportunity to live their lives to the fullest and their families must Deal with the pain of losing a loved one. I know that life Isnit fair but its a shame that All of those lives were taken. A Tamika a Page uni Clingon German another View of Economy a recent letter in the stars and stripes asserted that a annual Federal deficits Are out of control largely because legislators appropriate funds for unneeded programs pork barrel spending. A the resulting National debt requires the government to spend exorbitant amounts in order to cover the interest payments. A All government agencies must Stop All unnecessary spending. A a constitutional amendment to compel a balanced budget is urgently needed. Most economists and Many other citizens probably would agree but there Are other ways to look at these issues a As a percentage of the Gross National product recent deficits have been relatively Low 3-5 percent the same As in the 1930s. The deficits of world War ii however ranged from 20 to 31 percent of the Gross National product enabling the United states to win that War and also recover from the great depression. A interest on the National debt has been higher in recent years largely because of decisions to deregulate the interest rates paid to those who Deposit funds in Banks and other institutions. Reversing that action would solve this problem one that did not exist with higher deficits in world War ii. A virtually All government programs Are underfunded including those that Are almost unanimously believed successful head Start. A the huge number of bankruptcies Bank failures and savings and loan failures indicate if anything that non governmental organizations have borrowed and a spent much More than they should have and that this problem is far greater than anything traceable to government spending. A there is no reason to assume that if government ended All spending the Market for consumer goods would provide jobs for All citizens. A Frederick c. Talk about a melting pot. A Emily noid Raf Lakenheath England a. Gun control or theft Minnesota a Hennepin county recently ended its no questions asked Cash for firearms program. Six thousand firearms were collected and will be destroyed. According to the Media no Effort will be made to return stolen firearms to owners. First not returning recovered stolen property to owners is an outrage. Its an abuse of the Trust that citizens place in their government. Next such programs encourage firearm thefts. A Brooklyn n.y., program shows this clearly. One Man tried to a a sell to the City 23 firearms. The firearms were stolen from a new Jersey firearms dealer. Other shrewd people have sold junk firearms Worth nothing to these programs. How Many of the firearms collected by Hennepin county can even be fired finally is this what citizens expect of responsible government is this really firearms control or is it government sanctioned theft or the Purchase of worthless junk a tech.
