When we were needed we were there in some cases for entire careers. Most of us simply decided to serve our country forsaking More glamorous and lucrative careers and knowing we might be called upon for the unthinkable War. Hundreds of thousands of us deployed to the desert. When the timeworn ideals of duty Honor and country called we answered. How soon they forget. Now we Arentt needed anymore. The cold War is Over and we won. And so its an election year and we find ourselves faced with a More vicious enemy than we faced in the desert a politicians who will step on anyone in order to be re elected. After enduring the hardships of military life we Are suddenly faced with election year demagogy and military cutbacks have become the rallying cry. As columnist Tom Terpen recently wrote in the stars and stripes we Are vulnerable because we won not because we failed. Soldiers Are being told to get out after having been promised the Security of retirement in return for our 20-year sacrifice. We deserve to be rewarded for our successes.
