Must come first 1 am writing a reply to the letter Quot offer helping i agree that America As Leader of the free world should set an example. But How Long Are we going to be the leading country if we keep spending our Money on other countries this Money could be spent on things inside our own country. The billions of dollars that we give away in Aid could be used to give the Man on the Comer in a cardboard Box a warm Home and some food. There might be people who wait in line for three hours for a piece of meat that costs a weeks wage but that is in another country. In our country there Are people who done to even bother to wait in line simply because they done to even have a weeks wage. I sympathize with the people in the Commonwealth of Independent states but i feel that the Money will do More Good being spent on americans. Look at the last enemy we helped a Japan. We gave them enough Aid and knowhow to achieve a Trade surplus Over our country. The Point is although things Are far from perfect in the Commonwealth our people in America need to be tended to first. A John pel6 Jennings London Central High school High Wycombe . Help justified for weeks now in be been Reading Peoples complaints about How we have been giving Aid to the Commonwealth of Independent states and other needy countries when there Are homeless and hungry in America. Why should we help them they ask because they Are human they Are in need they Are hungry in the Cis a cosmonaut went into space and came Back to a paycheck that resembled an american child a weekly allowance. In the United states a baseball player stood at Bat three or four times caught a Fly Ball or two and walked away with a few thousand dollars. The Point being made is that we should help them whoever they Are wherever they Are. Why because we can. A John w. Lynn i Wiesbaden Germany take care of our own Reading the article about the people in West Virginia lined up for several hours for free surplus food should have been an Eye opener. When Are we going to open our eyes and realize that we need to Start taking care of our own As the Only superpower left in the world we Are Able to feed and provide funds to build Homes for others in foreign countries to improve their Way of life but Are unable to take care of our own people. When Are our officials going to Start taking care of America so far All they have done is make promises to the american people none of which has been kept. I have come up with several ways to take care of the hungry and the homeless. With the . Military downsizing and with bases around the United states being closed Why can to we turn some of those old installations into housing for people who have no Homes instead of trying to turn a Buck. I know some highly paid representative could come up with some rules to regulate How Long a person family would be Able to live on the installation. This would end the stories you read in the newspaper and see on television of people freezing to death or being maimed for life. Food should be no problem since we Are Able to Send it to other countries to feed their people. Why can to we take this food and feed the hungry in America we have witnessed Many great events in this decade. Lets witness one that is greater than the Berlin Walls coming Down. Lets feed and House our fellow americans. A Denny l. Traylor Caristedt Germany editor s note a letters from readers expressing their viewpoints or opinions Are published daily in this space. For example i have Many bicycling magazines that Are around 6 to 7 years old a really too old to even be interesting to our military hospitals or other waiting rooms. The technology on the bicycles in these older issues May be More common in those countries making the magazines even More usable. Also the magazines would be a Good source of English language material that i figure is in Short Supply for their schools or libraries. In any Case id like to give them to someone who could use them in printed form instead of As recycled paper or just Plain trash. Do the readers have any ideas a Teresa m. Merrick Sembach a Germany eee Dodds needs books too this is in reference to Quot books get new Home in Eastern Germany March 7. I am the Media specialist librarian for a High school serving about 550 students with the department of defense dependents schools. Although we Are not scheduled for closing we Are affected by the draw Down and Are struggling to provide up to Date resources in the midst of severe budget restraints. It would Benefit the High school Media Center and Dodds students if they had Access to the Community Library collection before it was donated to outside libraries. The Transfer of material from a Community Library to a Dodds Library requires a simple lateral Transfer. Perhaps 5 percent to 10 percent of the Community Library books would be valuable additions to the High school Media Center such As a recently published set of encyclopedias encyclopedia americana costs $769.50or other High Cost reference materials such As facts on file or sew Bank. The article quoted . Ambassador to Germany Robert m. Kimmitt As saying a libraries that once served the intellectual educational and recreational needs of american soldiers and their families Are now being made available to those who for Many years were not allowed Access to the ideas they this is a commendable goal however such resources Are also needed to continue to serve the families of the soldiers remaining in Germany. A Carol Lange Ahern Mannheim Germany a a horrifying experience on new years eve 1991, my husband and i flew into Philadelphia International Airport on a Mac military Airlift come flight from Frankfurt Germany. We decided to spend the night at a nearby Airport hotel. Forgoing the evenings festivities it also happened to be my birthday we turned in Early approximately 9 30 . Soon after Check in. I awoke to my horror at approximately 12 30 . To find a Man standing about 5 feet away going through our belongings. My screams alarmed the intruder and before i could awaken my exhausted husband the burglar fled a with $1,000 in Cash plus my Mastercard. Although we will ultimately recover $350 from the hotels insurance company we feel that other Mac travellers should be alerted to the danger. We were informed following the theft that the hotel was in the process of having its locks changed and we were assigned to a room with a lock that had not yet been changed apparently a similar theft had occurred there earlier. When the police investigated the crime there was no evidence of forced entry. After visiting our local jag judge advocate general office i was informed that jag did not know the procedure for alerting the military of this potentially life threatening situation. I would appreciate it if someone could provide me with an address or Means of letting others know of the risk they assume by staying at a hotel with inadequate Security. Holly a.
