In one stunning Day three of the top five menus seeds were knocked out of the French open. After five Days of relative Calm upsets jolted the tournament at its Halfway Point saturday and left the Bottom half of the menus draw with no big names. The first to go was Stich the reigning Wimbledon Champion and no. 4 seed. He was outclassed in straight sets by flamboyant Frenchman Henri Leconte 76 7-36-4,6-4. Edberg seeded no. 2, was ousted by Andrei Cherkasov of Russia 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 7-4. Chang no. 5, saved eight match Points in the fifth set before bowing to Sweden a Nicklas Kulti 7-6 7-52-6,6-3,3-6,8-6. Two other menus seeds were eliminated a no. 12 Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands and no. 13 Aaron Krickstein of the United states who was forced to retire with a foot Blister while losing 6-2, 1-0 to Uruguay a Marcelo Filippini. No. 7 Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia remained the Only seeded player in the Bot French open Tom half of the draw. The top half is still loaded with big names including americans Jim courier Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi a All of whom will be in action on sunday. While the top men faltered the women continued to avoid any major upsets. No. 1 Monica Seles no. 3 Gabriela Sabatini and no. 5 Jennifer Capriati All advanced to the round of 16. Seles needed just 45 minutes to beat Lori Mcneil of the United states 6-0, 61 Sabatini downed Frances Julie a lard 6-1, 6-3 and Capriati rallied to beat czechoslovak Karina Hab Sudrova 4-6, 64,6-3. The Days most dramatic match was that Between Chang the 1989 French open Champion Ana Kulti the 21-year-old swede who beat John Mcenroe in the first round earlier this week. With Kulti leading 5-4 in the fifth set Chang saved four match Points to hold serve attacking on Short balls and moving up to net to close out the Points. With Kulti leading 7-6, Chang fought off another four match Points before the swede finally put it away. Kulti teed off on a forehand passing shot and Chang could barely get his Racket on a lunging forehand Volley. By Ken Rappoport Chicago a Good Goa tend ing Good defense and Good Fortune put the Pittsburgh penguins in commanding position to win their second straight Stanley cup. With goaltender Tom Barrasso at his Best a and Luckiest a the penguins beat the Chi go Blackhawk 1-0 on saturday night in a High tension thriller at noisy Chicago stadium to take a 3-0 Lead in the Best-of-7 Stanley cup finals. The defending champions can Complete a sweep of the Blackhawk in game 4 on monday night and become the first team to win Back to Back nil titles since Edmonton did it in 1987 and 1988. The 3-0 Hole is a big one for the Blackhawk to climb out of. Only one team in nil history has come Back from a 3-0 deficit to win the finals a the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs. Barrasso and the penguins defense formed a devastating combination for the Blackhawk on saturday night. The Only goal of the game was scored by Kevin Stevens at 15 26 of the first period and that Sall Barrasso needed As he made 27 saves Many of them spectacular. Barrasso was Lucky too a two Chicago shots hit the Post in the first period As he recorded the second playoff shutout of his career. His first came against the Minnesota North stars in last years 8-0 cup clinching game. Typical of Barrasso work was a great Stop on Brian Noonan on a rebound with 8 08 left in the game. Stevens happened to be in the right lace when a shot by Jim Paek from the left Point deflected off a Blackhawk hit Stevens and went into the net. Otherwise Belfour had an equally Good night in goal for the Blackhawk with his Best performance of the series. With their 10th straight Victory the penguins became Only the third team in nil history to win 10 straight games in the playoffs. The others who accomplished that feat included the 1970 Boston Bruins and this years Blackhawk team which won a record 11 straight before losing three in a Row to the penguins. It was the first 1-0 game in a Stanley cup final in six years. Montreal a Patrick Roy shut out Calgary 1-0 in game 6 of the 1986 finals. Barrasso has not allowed a goal in the last 89 36 and has surrendered Only one in the last seven periods.
