In Ciurlik ignored i m writing in response to dependents Well cared for during persian Gulf in your attempt to paint a Rosy Pic Ture you overlooked the 2,000-plus de Pendents evacuated from in Ciurlik a Turkey. Not Only did most of them go through a real alarm red without protective equipment they were terrorized upon arrival in Philadelphia when they were told the base had been bombed after they de parted. Then they were advanced Money Given airline tickets shipped off and forgotten. They received Little information on their entitlements. My wife and two children with the allotted 66 pounds of baggage went Tolive with her parents. She was entitled to rent a furnished apartment at government expense but was not told this. She had to spend $1,000 for clothing school supplies and a few toys for our children. When we arrived at our new stateside assignment six months later no one knew about the 7440th cd p at in Ciurlik or its contribution to the War. They had never heard of operation provide Comfort either. They announced that i had been Over paid $800 and that i was not authorized to claim moving expenses from a Safe Haven location to my new duty station. Subsequent claims and remission applications were also denied. My dependents and Many others were not Only not cared for but also fined for their spouses participation in the War. I really should t complain As this is Par for the course for in Ciurlik. The forces there Are ignored by the stars and stripes never see an opinion poll or Reader Survey from there King Fahad who did t award the 7440th the liberation of Kuwait medal and the air Force which failed to care about our de Pendents and to mention us As the com Bat testing ground for the composite Wing concept. Don t worry about me. I m Safe now in saudi Arabia supporting operation Southern watch. What s that staf sgt. William f. Hunter Dhahran saudi Arabia right to know what Street stories oct. 8 on an to aired a segment concerning the persian Gulf War. A professor from Johns hop Kins University in Baltimore said it was wrong for our government to give the Public information on the destruction of Iraq s Mobile and stationary scud missile launchers information that was incorrectly confirmed. The Media and Public were told that the military s Success rate for destroying scuds was higher than it actually Story made it seem As if the military deliberately lied to the Public. During the War the government was under intense pressure to disclose information. Had so Many news conferences not been held i m sure there would have been a tremendous outcry from the Media about the Public s right to so news conferences were held and ple were Given facts which now seem Tobe wrong. During War information Given to the Public must be monitored. We must no forget that Iraq was privy to the same newscasts we watched on can. Does anyone really think that broadcasting a massive failure to destroy iraqi missiles would have been beneficial to the Alli Ance to do so would Only have Given Confidence to Saddam Hussein which May have prolonged the War and cos More lives. Do we really believe that our right to know was More important than ending the War Well with All the publicity about our failure to destroy Saddam s scuds is it any wonder that eight Middle Eastern countries have begun stocking up on these very missiles but then i guess that is Okas Long As our right to know has been satisfied. Make War not love i noticed your article concerning sex during operations desert shield and de Sert storm did not mention any percent Ages concerning married military Mem Bers. Are we to assume everyone out there reaching out to someone in their hour of need was single i certainly did not. I also cannot believe the Lack of condemnation for these activities. I would think that during a time of readiness you would need a sense of awareness the ability to look out for each other As Well As yourself and the clearheaded Ness to do your Job quickly and Well. You might also need All of these things to search out a partner for sex during a War but i think we Are better served when our military members minds Are working not their libido. And How does a military wife View these statistics Well i m grateful my husband did t go. I be heard no end of excuses about Why these people had sex during the War. Not one contained love or lasting commit ment. Most concerned the fear of dying the stressful situation and the inability to face death without a last fling. I must say i thought the military was supposed to train its people for these situations and i did t think incidental sex was in the handbook. Mary Conley Raf Alconbury England condoms seat belts alike in response to condoms Aren t the answer i can Only say the author must not realize that All teen age sex cannot be stopped by the Good advice of the youth parents. Virginity is a Nice Ideal but the fact re Mains that Well Over hah of teen agers door will Experiment with sex. Kids understand they can stay Safe by not having sex they Are not stupid. But using a condom during sex is to a curious teen Ager much better than no sex at All so the teen Ager takes a calculated risk. A Good analogy is seat belts and driving. Of course if we Don t drive at All we have no Chance of dying in an automobile Accident but we would consider not driving impractical. Wearing seat belts when we do drive greatly reduces not eliminates the risk of dying in an Accident. We Don t Stop driving just because some people die even after they buckle up. It s unreasonable to think that teen agers will Stop having sex because some condoms fail. It s important to teach them to Wear their seat belts if they re going to drive and the army Community serv ice and red Cross Are attempting to do so. In closing i feel compelled to urge contributors to the combined Federal Campaign not to close their eyes to the facts about teens and sex. The aforementioned organizations Are taking the Best possible action under the circumstances by reducing the risk of sexually transmitted diseases through Educa Tion about condoms. Michelle a. Castille Frankfurt Germany applause for program this letter is in response to Quality of life oct. 9. Since the writer had just arrived in Germany he May not have seen the Quality of life program at work. I ask that he take a second look. As the unit representative for this Gram i applaud it. Loudly the Inci dents the writer described do happen elsewhere maybe not on that grand Ascale. As single soldiers we do not have some of the same opportunities As our married counterparts for example housing other than Barracks lower weight allowances Etc. Some individuals Are not ready for the responsibility of caring for themselves. As one of their Peers maybe the writer should take it upon himself to guide them in the right direction. Show them the boundaries that must be adhered to. It s All about respect for your fellow human beings. When i Transfer from Germany i will certainty regret that there is probably no such program in the states. I will most assuredly lose the Freedom that i now enjoy of being treated As an adult not in need of parental guidance. Sherryl d. Jones Wiesbaden Germany it was Dik Browne i m quite glad that you take the comic Section of the stars and stripes seriously. I really enjoyed your poll and results As we rated the comics. However you stated that the creator of Hagar the Hor Rible is Chris Browne. This is wrong but you re on the right track. Chris Browne is the son of Hagar s creator the late Dik Browne. After working with Mort Walker on the popular comic strip i and Lois Dik Browne created the feisty Viking. The strip became one of the fastest growing comic strips in newspaper comic history. Drawing and producing the Hagar step were very much a family affair. All members of the Browne family were involved with the strip by assisting dad with Story ideas. After Dik Browne s death Chris took Over the Job of drawing Hagar and Dik s other son Chance draws the i and Lois strip. Dik Browne is a much celebrated cartoonist with Many creations to his credit. He received numerous awards and his work is enjoyed All Over the world. Let s give credit where credit is due and try to be More careful with the facts in the future. Tech. Sgt. Michael g.
