During my out processing i went to transportation to get paperwork to mail out three boxes through the military postal system. Since i was being reassigned to another unit in Germany i thought this would be the Best Way to go when i arrived at my new unit i received two of the three boxes. After waiting for a few weeks and not receiving the third Box i went to the Post locator at the Post office of my new unit and explained my problem. They asked me if i had insured the Box when i mailed it. I told them no because i had mailed it using the transportation office and the mrs. They explained they could t do anything about it because they had no Way of tracking it. I even tried to Call my last unit but due to the draw Down i can t Contact anybody because the phones have been disconnected. What do they do with boxes and other mail is there a Way to insure boxes and other items that you mail through the mrs sgt. Dennis l. Hanselman Darmstadt Germany Barbara Lutz postal service analyst . Army postal group Europe replies " we re Happy to report that we were Able to track Down your missing Box and you have since received it. Well explain what happened and Why and use this As an Opportunity to remind our military customers of procedures that can prevent situations like yours from occurring. What happened prior to june 1992, you were assigned to a unit which later inactivated. You received orders which assigned you to a new unit in Darmstadt. Before you reported to your new unit you spent a month in the states on leave. The package that you mailed from Bremerhaven to yourself in Darmstadt arrived while you were on leave. The Darmstadt Community Mai room car personnel had. Not been informed of your pending arrival. When they received a package addressed to you did t know who you were and did t have a postal directory card a form 3955 for you they returned the package to sender As required. When the package was received by the Bremerhaven Apo there was no unit to Send it to As your unit had already inactivated. Since your package had been mailed via official mail through the 581st signal co official Mai room the Bremerhaven Post office sent it Back to them. The 581st mail clerk set the package aside hoping you would Contact them and provide them with your Correct address. After i contacted the 581st Mai room its personnel re addressed your package to your car and Box number and sent it to you. What can be done to prevent this situation from happening it is very important that both the old and new unit Mai rooms and Post offices Are informed of a change of address As soon As possible. In your Case although your supervisor at your new unit knew that you were coming the car personnel who sort mail for Many different units did t know. When you unprocessed at your new unit you filled out a postal directory card which went to both the car and Post office but your Box had arrived a month before that. When personnel leave one unit of assignment for another they need to Send a postal directory card to both the losing and gaining Apo and respective Mai rooms. This is particularly important to do when an individual will be delayed by leave or temporary duty before reporting to a new unit. If the gaining unit Mai room is aware that an individual will be arriving at a future Date that person s mail will be held for him or her. In accordance with Neucom directive 10-4 postal and courier service you May insure parcels mailed through the Apo system Only if postage is paid on that parcel. In other words since a parcel is mailed via maps or Dod official Intra theater mail without Cost for postage insurance cannot be purchased. If you wish to pay postage then you May Purchase up to $600 Worth of insurance. We re glad we were Able to assist you with your problem.
