European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 12, 1993, Darmstadt, Hesse An american Success Story sings the blues by Ron Mckinney entertainment writer the lady can sing the blues. When expatriate Joan Faulkner takes the Small stage at the Tiger a last in Frankfurt Germany she delivers with a powerful voice blessed with a Heartfelt emotion that captures the essence of the blues. Her High Energy performance culminates with her interpretation of the classic Georgia on my mind after spending most of her show laughing bouncing around and exuberantly coaxing the audience to sing along Faulkner unexpectedly stands still at the Side of the piano and grips it. And does t let go. The smile disappears her posture wakens and slackers. Her eyes Darken and shimmer with sadness As she embraces the pain of the classic blues song. Yes the lady can sing the blues. But Don t dare Call Joan Faulkner a blues Singer. Not the Joan Faulkner who is about to release a Sony record that she says leans toward disco. Not the Joan Faulkner who last week Sang classical songs at Frankfurt s magnificent alte oper with a philharmonic band. Not the Joan Faulkner who has performed at the Bern jazz festival. Not the Joan Faulkner who has provided vocals to a 100-plus studio recordings. Not the Joan Faulkner who Sang in Yugoslavia with a 25-piece big band. And certainly not the Joan Faulkner who provided studio backup on the infamous Midi Vanilli album. Faulkner wants no part of being labelled a blues Singer. Quot not just jazz. Not just gospel. Not just blues. A Good Singer. A darned Good Singer Quot is How Faulkner wants to be known. The Indiana native has to be Good to succeed in the format of Tiger Palast. Talks amps Jim de Helm Joan Faulkner came to Europe a military spouse. Now she s a top notch Singer. About unplugged a Faulkner delivers without even a microphone. She is accompanied by the Larry Quot wild Quot Rice Trio consisting of a pianist bassist and drummer. Faulker is no longer a struggling performer she favors designer clothes from Paris and French perfume and yet she still keeps her ties to her american family of troops Here in Europe. She came to Germany As a military wife in 1978. Although she has been singing since she was a toddler serious stardom has eluded her. But she has met her own definition of Success Quot Success is doing something you enjoy and making a living. That s Success that and giving audiences pleasure. Quot i be done a show for an hour and forty minutes and they still wanted More. That s a great and then Quot what s important to me is being Able to whether she s singing in front of 4,000 at the alte oper or several dozen at the Tiger Palast she has the ability to reach people. Quot i m a personable person and i m a personable Singer. I touch people when i m singing. That s the part of me that comes across she said. Usually a Faulkner show is More an experience than a night out. Her audience often is captivated not just with her voice but also by her personality. She sings to them and with them. Arid they sing along. Call her the pied Piper of nightclub music. Quot that s the Way it should be Quot Faulkner says. Quot i m not Tina Turner or Michael Jackson. When a group of people come Here they want to be entertained. My repertoire reaches the youngest to the oldest Black White Blue Green it does t matter she admits being nervous the night at the alte oper when she fulfilled a dream by singing classical music with the philharmonic orchestra. As she waited to sing then she had Only one thought Quot trying to remember these damned words Quot she laughs. Her upcoming single due out in Germany in late March or Early april is called Movin higher by Delevah featuring Joan Faulkner.
