About 35 youngsters and half As Man adults went on the trip sponsored by the school wide enrichment program Calle Swep. After the lengthy bus ride pupils from grades two through six were fed by Harvey Nelson the Swep instructor Sast the Villa Borghese Down the Span a Steps to the pantheon and the foun Tain of Trevi. Seemingly tireless the children rushed from one sight to the next oozing and aching while posing for and snapping Pic Tures. At the base of the Spanish Steps pupils crowded around the Street artists and a Man creating Chalk masterpieces in the Street. They May have come to see the sculptures and the frescoes but it was the Opportunity to watch a television screen and be on the Telephone at the same Tim that made the pantheon come alive for Many of the children. Nonetheless the Fountain of Trevi favorite among tourists was the biggest hit. I would Hope that our trips Are a Littlemore intense than what they would get from a fun Field trip although we do those kind too Nelson said. This is just an Opportunity for them to experience it firsthand. Scholarship program deadline approaches by the stars and Stripe Washington the deadline is Nearine for submissions for the eight annual Amateur athletic Union Mars Milky Way College scholarship program open to High school seniors across the United states and in the department of defense dependents schools. Nominations for the program which honors seniors who Excel in academics athletic  Community service Mustbe postmarked no later than dec. 6. This year 102 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $40,000 will be awarded. One male and one female from each state and the District of Columbia will be selected As state recipients which entitles them to $1,000 toward their College educations. Dodds student compete As representatives of their parents Home state of  those winners eight regional recipients will be selected for scholarships of $10,000. They also will receive a free trip to new York wit their parents and a school representative for an awards ceremony april 25, when two regional winners will be selected As National recipients a Honor Worth $40,000 in scholarships. Last year Richard Drane Osbaum Holder High school in Germany was named state recipient for Mississippi and received a $1,000 scholarship. Business career symposium slated Heidelberg Germany Shiller International University has planned its first annual business an career symposium for nov. 19. The symposium will be at the University located at Bergstrasser 106 in Heidelberg. Two sessions rescheduled from 10 . To noon and from 2 . To 5 .the symposium is free and will be conducted in  Are encouraged to bring their re sum s and Wear business attire. Refreshments will be available. University sets open House Augsburg Germany the University of Maryland Augsburg Campus will conduct its half Owenhouse saturday beginning at 9 30 . The University encourage prospective students and their parents to tour the Campus and meet the faculty staff and students. The open House includes refreshments a pane discussion by campy student ambassadors a financial Ai presentation and an optional City tour. Hispanic enrolment in College rises but Gap remains Washington a Monica Aguirre started preparing for College when she was in the sixth Grade. Today she is freshman studying education at the univer sity of Texas at Elpaso and one of a steadily growing number of hispanics in american colleges and universities. The american Council on education re ported last week that hispanic enrollee non higher education grew 84 percent in the past decade from 472,000 in 1980 to867,000 in 1991. But it is still the lowest among All minority  1990, 28 percent of hispanics 25 and older had attended College and 6 percent had received degrees according to the re port based on statistics from the census Bureau the education department and other agencies. Among non hispanic minorities 47 percent had some College Edu cation and 14 percent had graduated. The report said gains in the hispanic population have not been matched by his panic enrolment in colleges and universities. The 1990 census counted nearly 22.4 million hispanics and they Are projected to surpass Blacks As the largest minority group in the United states by 2020. The University of Texas at Elpaso began program in 1986 designed to increase the representation of hispanic women in institutions of higher learning. Aguirre now 19, was one of the first participants. Starting in the sixth Grade Aguirre began numerous visits to the Texas Campus so she would be familiar with it once she Starte College. For career Day she was paired with a hispanic schoolteacher. They choose someone from our own neighbourhoods most of them Low income Aguirre said. We can see ourselves i them see that we can be  the University also helped her apply for scholarships Ana other financial Aid. Today she is an exception among hispanic Stu dents at the school she does not hold a Job. Diana Natalicio president of the Al Pas University said most hispanic students on the Campus need jobs to support not Only their education but also their families. Natalicio said Only one third of the his panic students at the University graduate. Hispanic College enrolment also is held Down because hispanics have the lowest rate of graduation from High school among All races and ethnic groups. R
