Neighbourly germans in response to a tired of complaints May 3i am a teen Ager and i have lived in Germany since i was 3 years old. I have been in the German school system Ever since then and i have never not even once heard a German berate americans for living Here. On the contrary most of them Are delighted to be hosting us and every German i know has at least two american friends. Most of my own friends Are German. A a a a a a a my father and i often shop on the Economy and we always speak English while shopping. Since we both speak fluent German we would know if distasteful comments were being made about us. So far we have not heard one personally i am tired of americans who come to Germany and complain about the weather the people the traffic the alleged Lack of adequate Public transportation and who knows what else. This is the country i grew up in and it hurts to hear my american friends make disparaging comments about my Home. I sympathize with a tired of complaints a but it Isnit fair to classify All germans As , in a sure there Are a few but i have never met one in spite of my close Contact with our German hosts. A Courtney Voeger mor Felden Germany music and emotions. It has taken me a few Days to put my thoughts together on the subject of whether or not music has an effect on the violence of youth today. I Russing an emotion that is not just his or or own. People then listen to the song because they can relate to How the writer feels. A v v. Some people feel better when they listen to a certain Type of music because they can appreciate the feelings involved and empathize with it. So when a rapper is talking about the violence around him her we can to condemn the artist because they Are expressing an emotion within themselves. Likewise for heavy Metal songwriters a the emotions Are valid simply because they Are being expressed by another human being. The Only difference is the Way they express them usually Good emotions that Are cd pressed by songwriters like love happiness and Joy Are embraced. However when sadness anger depression or other bad emotions Are expressed people usually adults feel that the songwriter is trying to influence the youth of today. L am 22 years old and do not have children of my own yet but i will try to tolerate my children a music because if we As a society cannot express our bad feelings along with our Good feelings How a we to grow together As human beings a Krista m. The Genie of hatred what could possibly possess the stars and stripes to give further exposure and distribution to the kind of filth and bigotry represented by the new order by printing a readable graphic in the paper if vandals had inserted a Centrefold into the paper would you have published the photo so we could see what had been perpetrated on the Community the stars and stripes availability at the checkout stand in the shop Pette where the tabloid papers would normally be should not cause a similar shift in the qualify of the editorial Content of the paper. Reporting this attack on the Community is your duty but you should be careful that in so doing you done to inadvertently further the attack in the process.-. A Quot a \ this sort of racist activity seems to be More and More in the news of late and it is troubling. I believe the criminals who commit such attacks Are emboldened by the intolerant and bigoted tone that has been set by our leaders in the homosexuals in the military debate. It is naive to believe that we can let the Genie of hate fear and intolerance out of his bottle and limit the effects to a single population. Racism intolerance and big Otic Are All parts of the same terrible plague. I Hope our leaders will soon see the link Between these twin hatreds and realize that we cannot stamp out race hatred and simultaneously encourage fear and intolerance of homosexuals. A William Russell Heidelberg Germany a commentary in by Susan Greenberg a so you be finally come Back to the West a a Friend said in Paris where i was starting a new Job after three years in Prague czech Republic. A Welcome Back to after a few months in town i am not so sure. A Quot. A a on my first Day i went to the local Telephone office to get Normal service re stored. How Nice i told myself to live again in a country where the phones work a where they even come up with innovations like Minitch. In Prague the atrocious Telephone system is the Black Cloud that looms Over every working Day a the lost hours spent trying to get a line or a right number. There the phones do not work because the Stalin Era switchboards cannot Cope with current demand but things will get better because the telecommunications monopoly is being privatized alas in Paris the state telecommunications assistant could not Register my request in. Her computer and restore my service because of a strike against plans to privatize the network. I left the office quickly but As i crossed the Road a like most parisians a few seconds before the lights changed a an angry French voice hissed a you must be a foreigner a French woman would wait a i stared in amazement not Only because this statement was so palpably untrue but also because it was my second experience of a Paris attack on the first was on the metro when an old Man interrupted my English conversation with another briton by shouting a a you re in France so speak French a he was clearly taking his Cue from the government which recently proposed a Law making it an offence to use non French words in advertising and Public life. In Prague i remembered with growing nostalgia people used to years of isolation Are still pleased to hear other languages and foreign attempts to learn Devilish czech Are greeted with amused indulgence. Much fun was had by All when the czech Branch of Mcdonald a named its Chicken nuggets a Jmc Bucek and won the coveted a czech made Label for them. Xenophobia exists in Prague but is Small Beer compared with the tension creating hatred in Western cities. Crime has risen 300 percent since the end of the strict obedience imposed by communism Prague a but 300 percent of almost Zero. I suddenly missed Prague very much. Of course a Shock is inevitable after any big move especially from a quiet City to a world capital. But there is something else about moving from East to West in this Fin de Siccle which is surprisingly depressing. Life is hard in the former socialist bloc. People Are struggling with enormous changes a All at once in every area of life a As the old certainties disappear. Unemployment is always hard but what if you grew up thinking it would never happen neighbourly relations Are often Touchy but what if years of Frozen history have melted leaving puddles on your Kitchen floor we Are used to thinking about a a poor Eastern Europe struggling with change but the fact is that considering the scope and the Lack of practice people have had the countries of Central Europe have shown surprising aplomb. It is the West that is struggling out of All proportion to the task at hand wes.1 pm society has had years of practice in getting used to life a and Downs but still reacts with gothic horror to relatively Small observer service August 12.1974.
