The Region is a photographer s dream with endless opportunities for snapshots particularly at the Many fishing ports along the coast. To help you improve the pictures you take during your trip Here Are several suggestions concerning shooting in Normandy from experienced photographers. The tips Are specifically for 35 my cameras but most apply to other types of cameras As Well. A take plenty of film. You la take More pictures than you expected because of the Beauty of the Region. If you re faking Black and White photos Tri x or plus x film using a person in this photo helps show the massive size of this Caisson. A amps. Ken George Are the most popular choices. For color film the experts say a film with an Asa rating of 200 to a Good. Compromise for the fast changing lighting. Photographers say you can get National geographic Type colors by using Asa 25 Kodachrome but the frequent Cloudy skies of Normandy and occasional Stormy weather May put you in a situation of not having enough Light to shoot. However beware of the processing delays you May encounter with Kodachrome. A film with 100 Asa is also Good and you can set your exposure meter As you would a 200 or 400 Asa film and ask a custom lab to develop it at that rating. The pictures you get will still be Good with Little loss of Quality. Consider taking slides if you normally take print film. You can later have a print made from any slide you like and the slides can be projected if you want to organize a slide show of your trip. A take More than one Lens. Take a zoom such As the 80-200, which one photographer recommended As the finest Choice for All around Normandy shooting your pictures will nearly always be far More impressive with a zoom than with a Normal Leni on Days when the Light level is Low you May need a bipod or Brace for the camera. And take a wide Angle Lens either a 28 my or 35 my. If you use a 24 my or a 21 my there is the tendency by Many photographers to try to capture everything in one picture. If you do use an extreme wide Angle Lens a like the 24 my a try to fill the foreground of the picture when composing otherwise your picture has an empty foreground and Small figures in the distance. And with extreme wide Angle lenses remember that the closer you get to people the More distorted their features will be because of the stretching characteristics of the lenses. When shooting try for Long medium and tight shots. The three together will help develop your picture Story of the trip to Normandy. A shoot Early and ate. That Rule applies almost anywhere in the world because of the pleasing tight for photographs but it seems doubly True in Normandy. 16 stripes Magazine May 19, 1994 there the Sun s rays before 10 . And after 4 30 . In Spring and summer give the landscape and the Stone and ironwork of buildings unusually pleasant interesting a tones. A the morning and afternoon Light is also Good for color. Your subjects have a warmer tone and the texture is Richer. And people Don t have the deep facial shadows that show up in shots taken in Brilliant midday lighting. Don t be afraid to shoot against the direction of the Sun that is not always having the Sun at your Back advised another photographer. If you underexposed your photos shooting at the Sun you get a Silhouette against the Sun. This effect is often interesting and adds variety to your take three photos of the same scene if you know the picture could be a Good one. This is called bracketing shooting one half Stop above and below in addition to the setting you believe right. One of the three shots should be properly exposed. This is essential slides because the Range of proper exposure is considerably less than with Black and White film. A a for Black and White photography use a Light yellow or red filter to get better definition in the sky and Clouds. With the rapidly changing weather you get impressive Clouds and sky in your pictures and the medium yellow will add to the effect. For even More dramatic photos of Clouds and sky add a polarizing filter. The polarizing filter can a Iso be used with color to Darken the sky and. Eliminate reflections. A even if you re shooting family photos make sure your subjects Are doing something in the pictures. With so Many interesting places on the coast especially there is always a Way to have your subjects in action or looking at something. A look at the postcards to see what shots Are popular Don t try to duplicate the postcards but look fora different Way of photographing the same thing. A in photographing the military Sites along the coast. Try to include people in the shots to show the scale of the fortifications. of them Are massive such As the emplacements at the chaos Battery and the bunkers directly on the coast. The outline of a person gives scale to the Shell pocked Concrete structures. A you la need a Flash in almost every a Day museum. Avoid shooting the Flash directly at Glass display cases because the reflection will ruin your picture. If possible Bounce the Light off the ceiling or hold the Flash away from the camera so the Light hits the Case from another Angle. However some museums Don t allow use of a Flash. And some museums also Don t allow tripods but you can carry a Small handheld support or a Mono pod that can be used to Brace against an object and take your shot at a slow shutter Speed. If All else fails at the museum there Are usually Static displays of military equipment outside. These exterior photos also serve nicely to illustrate your visit to the museum. / a beware of Salt Spray and Sand if you re taking pictures directly on the Beach. At the invasion beaches nearly every photographer wants to walk the Sands at least once. Try to keep the camera out of Ocean Spray. In addition avoid getting Sand on or in the camera. In extreme cases you can put your camera in a plastic bag with Only the Lens protruding. If you know you be gotten Spray or Sand on the camera clean it carefully.
